I know this is uncharted territory here but what would be more prestigious making it to the NCAA Tourney and losing in the first or second round or winning the NIT Championship? I know coaches on both ends just can't place which feather would look best in their caps for recruits.

In the women's game? A big name program not even making the field of 64 would be hideously embarrassing, even with an NIT win.

My answer would be reversed for the men's game.

For an up and coming team, say, St. Boanventure, the NCAAs are far preferable even if the Bonnies lose early. For any team that may have struggled for no fault of their own - transfers, injuries, mis-season coaching change or even a hurricane like Tulane had to deal with (Katrina) - winning the WNIT would be huge for the team going forward but wouldn't do much for recruiting. Didn't help USF or Marquette.

I think either would be good for an up-and-coming team. For a big name team (no name here, but their color is Carolina blue), going to the NIT is an embarassing step down.

If the team is very young, maybe going to the NIT and winning gives them more games and an opportunity to develop momentum for the following season. That could be better than one- and-done.

It's been a training ground for up-and-coming programs : FGCU and Miami are examples.

From a coaching perspective and local marketing/publicity winning the WNIT is preferable. Each win would get a segment on the local sports TV news and articles in the local newspaper.

How on earth has UNC dropped off so much? They definitely give priority to women's sports there, there are built-in rivalries (in-state, no less!) great history, can't be hard to recruit to that campus...Hatchell needs to go. Get some fresh blood in there.
