It is likely the Pac-12 will invite Texas State as its eighth football member next month. That will make the league FBS compliant in 2026. It is also unlikely that the league will be able to poach any AAC or MW teams in the near future. The league needs a ninth football member as a 7-game football schedule is not tenable out west.

Ergo this question: if the Pac-12 invites UConn for football only, what demands should UConn make?

IMO, it is these three:

1. It is a football only arrangement: we do not give them any basketball games.

2. We do not pay the Pac-12 any travel subsidies

3. We get a 70% share of TV money

If the Pac-12 comes around and gauges our interest in becoming their ninth football member, these should be red lines in the sand. If they can't accept them, pound sand.

I am still disgusted about how we were treated by the Big 12 and surprised that UConn would have any interest at all in the PAC-12? I am so done with UConn getting kicked around. Sorry for the snarky comment. I am proud of what our FB has accomplished despite being kicked around and I would not be happy at all going to the PAC-12. They couldn’t offer enough in my opinion.

I disagree. I think the PAC12 would be entertaining as hell for us. If that offer is on the table nd we are refusing it, we’d better know something better is imminent. The PAC might be as good as the ACC pretty quickly. They have the advantage of being out west. There’s lots of talent there and they have a good group of brands. They’ll be a way stronger version of the Mountain West soon.

Who is even left in the PAC12? Washington ST, Oregon St?? All that travel? Not being able to go to away games? No tradition? I don’t even like those western states for reasons I can say here. No way I am dishing out money to go there. And Texas State? How does that help recruiting? What are they like the 12th best FB school in Texas? We are just starting to recruit thanks to NIL. I think making that move would put a stress on recruiting and NIL? It would restrain our growth in my opinion. I would have loved the ACC and likely that conference will still make the most sense for us once Clemson, Florida ST, North Carolina and Virginia leave. We will still be stuck playing west coast schools, but at least we regain our rivalries and the majority of schools still on the east coast, plus at least SMU is a decent Texas school.

I think the Rent would be really empty playing teams in the new PAC 12. On the bright side parking and traffic wouldn’t be a problem. Also I will be able to pick any seat in the lower bowl to watch the games.

The current Pac-12 football schools are Oregon State and Washington State. Starting in 2026, the conference will expand to include Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State.

That’s a pretty nice little football conference.

How could the Rent be empty playing Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State? That’s way better than CCSU, UMass, East Tennessee St and FIU.

A football only offer to the PAC is great—-if nothing else is in the works.

"UConn as a football-only member makes no sense for the Pac-12. None. The conference would be better off adding New Mexico State.....But if all sports are on the table, UConn basketball is a big enough brand to get the Pac-12’s attention......Recycle the same arguments against South Florida, but with even more vigor. Connecticut is simply too far outside of the Pac-12’s current footprint for the Huskies to be an expansion candidate.....The Huskies reportedly turned down a football-only offer from the Pac-12 in October....the Huskies passed, opting to maintain independence moving forward....Connecticut is simply too far outside of the Pac-12’s current footprint for the Huskies to be an expansion candidate."

I would be cool with if the PAC12 agreed all UCONN conference FB games would be played in East Hartford. Glad to see that we declined and chose to remain independent. We have a better chance of becoming the next Notre Dame than we have of garnishing any success in the PAC12. Makes no sense to me, although it does look like they are putting together a decent group of schools for their conference and their FB should be decent and fun to watch.

I don’t remember any report saying we turned down a football-only invitation. I thought it was an all-sports invitation last fall?

Don Amore reported in the Hartford Courant that UConn turned down a football-only invite.

Sources: UConn won’t join Pac-12, doesn’t consider conference the right fit

"Though the possibility of UConn joining the Pac-12 as a football-only complement was explored last week, this will not happen. UConn sources, requesting anonymity, told The Courant the university doesn’t consider this the right fit at this time."

Ah okay. I remember the “at this time” comment but for some reason I thought it was an all-sports invitation. I wonder if DB was/is waiting for the media revenue numbers or if it’s a firm no thank you.

I wouldn’t put too much weight into a “denial” before they had the conference members and expected media deal fleshed out.

No doubt things could change. I do think that we would throw them a bone of a basketball game if we joined.

I got no comments or likes for suggesting the ACC :) Ya, the ACC is a bad conference right now, but it is still the most logical fit. I really am holding out hope for the Big Ten. That is a pipe dream of course.
