After seeing the fan base stats in the NYT today---Louisville is screwed.
If you look athe the Demographics Nate Silver posted at the NYT today here are the top 6 teams not yet associated:
Notre Dame (The Whale) (768,000)
WVU (768,000)
Rutgers (768,000)
Kansas (768,000)
BYU (768,000)
UConn (768,000)

Way down the list of available teams
Louisville (300,433)
This assumes the PAC-16 and Missouri to the SEC as #14.
That's based purely on estimated national fanbase not wealth or geography or accomplisments.

That's based purely on estimated national fanbase not wealth or geography or accomplisments.
It my eyes it just comes down to the fact that Louisville doesn't by itself, or in conjunction with another school, deliver a market that is substantial enough to warrant adding Louisville. ND and Texas are their own markets, getting Syracuse, UConn, and Rutgers takes care of the colleges in the NYC area.
