Mitch Barnhart is Kentucky's Athletic Director. I don't know what the heck he's talking about.

Q: Does [Barnhart] feel like [UK] women’s basketball is moving in the right direction?

Barnhart: “I don’t think there’s ever a time in journeys — that’s my favorite word in today’s world; most things are journeys — whether it’s in life or a program or a department. It’s about journeys. They’re never straight paths. What people think of what is supposed to be these really straightforward ascents to pinnacles of success and you never leave them, I don’t think that’s reality. The reality is the journey of what we’re on is always a winding road, ups and downs, blind spots, clear paths. Matthew is more than a women’s basketball coach for us, he’s an ambassador for the university who loves this place and has committed his heart and soul to this place. I don’t look at him as a women’s basketball coach. I look at him as a much different person for this university. That’s important.

Holy cow.

I'm not sure I'd want my boss looking at me a something other than the position he hire me to do and is paying me for.

Geno is probably looked at the same way. Much more than just the WBB coach.

Wow. That should scare recruits. It says that Kentucky doesn't take women's basketball seriously. The school is fine having a coach that might not coach well but, hey, he's a terrific guy.

And this:

"If there’s isolation around the program, I’m not addressing anything at their place, they’re going to handle it their way."

I mean, wow. I don't think words mean what this guy thinks they mean.

I guess that "40 minutes of dread" must have been the mantra of the Kentucky players and assistant coaches as they had to endure each game's journey playing for and coaching with Matthew Mitchell.....in the end, their feet did their talking as they took the fastest path out of Lexington.....

Now that is the definition of COLORFUL LANGUAGE. If an interpreter is needed I'd be pleased to oblige. The highlighted portion says it all--meaning : we have no thoughts (at this time) of dumping Mitchell.

Seems like he's trying to answer questions by not answering them. The default position in these kind of things seems to be to blame the coach. It could be that these players simply left because they wanted more playing time or looked into the future and did not see championships. It could be that Barnhart doesn't want to go there so comes up with the philosophical gobbledygook lol

Looks like he did not pass the high school English exam.

I suspect the gibberish translates into I pretend to have a job here... which revolves around keeping the one and done coach happier than a pig in cupcakes and sauce. I don't even know who I'm babbling about, but that's okay, 'cuz the guy I really report to patted me on the head just this morning!

"Forty Minutes of Dread" is actually what most people feel knowing they will be spending the better part of the next hour listening to Mitch Barnhart.

Respectfully, the criticism of Barnhart is a bit over the top. Conceding that the guy is no Cicero, his point is not that hard to understand. His view is that Matt Mitchell's value to the University of Kentucky cannot be measured by satisfaction or dissatisfaction with how the women's basketball program performs in a given year. While history tells us that that is an unusual position for an athletic director to adopt, it is not an unreasonable one.

Be like firing the mascot! Also, I understand the Brylcreem company is a big sponsor.

Q&A: Barnhart discusses issues within women’s basketball program

I read the rest of the Q and A and listened to some of the interviews with Mitchell. Some things that caught my attention:
- "Some" exit interviews were held
- The AD travels with the team and based on what he saw, things looked fine or what he imagined they should be (studying, playing well, etc.)
- The departures of assistants? He wants his assistants to move onto to other jobs after 4 or 5 years, but Mitchell's are not lasting close to that recently
- Mitchell says he and his assistants have to communicate better during recruiting and while they're (the players) are here.

I saw a solo post on the transfer thread back that noted a mention of a donation Mitchell made to UK. He and his wife made the largest single donation by a university employee ever to the athletic department --- $1 million in 2014, to be paid over 10 years.
Given that this is WCBB, I'm guessing the AD is going to be a bit patient here....

This translates into I, and eventually you will, realize that I'm paid far more then I'm worth, but if I kick back some of it you'll keep me around. It is Kentucky, but that is strange even for Kentucky.

Damn, if you look at the video of Mitchell embedded in the article he says pretty outlandish stuff, stammering as he does, about how now he thinks he knows who they have to recruit, huminah huminah, huminah. Deer in the head lights but backed by his AD. Could be Dan Quayle spelling potato. Take a look. It's more painful than the AD. He's a jerk. Always been. Wasted a lot of good talent.

Saying that Mitch Barnhart is no Cicero is like saying that Benito Mussolini is no Mother Teresa. Sheesh.
