You should! Except you'll have to fight me for the 1/1s :D

The great thing about collecting Kemba is that he gets relatively little hobby love, so you'll find his SP's, autos, and game pieces are relatively cheap. I don't necessarily do this for investment purposes, but a bonus is that Kemba's career is on a HOF trajectory (closest bball reference comps to this point are two HOFers), and bball HOFers generally experience a massive pop in value once inducted.

Of course, Kemba's only now entering the back 9 of his career, so he has a ways to go to maintain his pace. Nothing an NBA championship with the Celts couldn't cure!

For me it’s more about the hobby of it / collecting cards of my favorite guys. Of course I’d like the cards to appreciate one day, part I’d take a bath on it if it means building a sick display!

My favorite UConn collectibles in my home: a Beast of the East tee shirt autographed by the entire 1989-90 team; a set of 2 Gampel seats-one autographed by Geno, the other by Calhoun; and a pair of Jen Rizzotti's sneakers autographed.

Damn that’s an awesome collection!

How'd you score seats?

I used to collect a lot of baseball cards. My dad was kind of my inspiration. Also, so was having a bit of OCD. My dad like many, lost his collection when he went to college and his mom threw them out. My uncle said my dad's collection was unlike he had ever seen.

My dad tells us stories about his Mantle rookies and other cards that were thrown out when he was in The Navy. Would kill to have seen those.

I have a large collection of 50'-70's stars and rookie cards. Also excellent 1887 Allen & Ginter Anson and Kelly.
2 Daughters not interested, so I would to sell to a collector. Dealers want steal them for 10% of value. I rather hold on to them than give them away. If interested let me know.

My grandmother was one of the few mom's that didn't throw out his baseball cards when he went off to college. She gave them to him maybe 30 years ago when she found them. No Mantle rookies, although my dad is convinced he had one back in the day. His Two Best I think are:

1949 Bowman Jackie Robinson Rookie Card
1948 Bowman Stan Musial Rookie Card

He has countless Mantles, Maris, Mays, Berra, Koufax cards. unfortunately when he was a kid he wrote his initials on the back of cards which diminishes their value. All in I'd say his collection is worth somewhere between 10k-20k, but none of them have been graded.

My friend sells really neat plaques and photos containing cool legacy cards of some NFL and MLB teams and players. They're actually really nice. He just recently had to create a website since his store-front was shut down do to COVID, and he can't travel to fairs and expos to sell. Tough situation for him, but it's about time he created a website lol. No UConn stuff yet unfortunately, but there's some pretty interesting memorabilia on there. Feel free to check it out. www.sportsmagnetsunlimited.com

My dad said he probably had at least 3 of the entire Mantle rookie set with 6 Mantles. He always remembers he was one short of having 7 of number 7.
Still, if the moms hadn't thrown them away. The ones that are left wouldn't be nearly as valuable today.

The steroids era killed me. I had rare cards of McGwire, Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod... etc.

My favorite card is a Mickey Mantle/Ted Williams duo card that my best friend gave me for graduation. It's in near mint condition. His father gave him his cards. It's not a big collection, and if his father had started 5 years earlier, it would really be something, but he has some nice Willie Mays cards in there.

This is still a thing? I have a ton of baseball and some hockey cards from the 70's-90's. I have a few older cards that are defaced in some way, including guys like Sandy Koufax.

Man, I would love to turn those into Scotch or Bourbon. But the stores I used to see specializing in this stuff are all gone.

When you say 70s, how early? Condition is everything now with cards.

Probably around 74 on. Maybe earlier. Haven't looked often. Some are in very good shape, others less so. No idea how to value them or get rid of them.

Ha, that’s the same thing we’ve told my dad, that they’re so valuable because everyone threw theirs out. They’d be worth a fraction of their current worth if everyone kept theirs. Also, sales were so low that Topps dumped pallets of 1952 cards into the ocean! Some fish must have had an insane collection.

Nothing actively, but I obsessively collected baseball cards in the mid to late 80s

I’d have some interest in earlier 70s stuff, provided they’re in good shape.

Topps recently released a new baseball card line called Project 2020. 20 different artist will create rookie card variations for 20 (predetermined) players. Topps sells them on their website for 48 hours and only prints what is ordered.

With Derek Jeter being my favorite baseball player and one of my favorite athletes, I have decided I am going to buy all 20 of his cards as they become available. I have bought a few other sports cards over the past few years but nothing of much value (more sentimental). Most of the memorabilia I have is from games I've attended or things I collected as a kid. My apartment is too small to do anything but keep them in storage for now, but when I eventually buy a place I want to display all my UConn and Yankees stuff in a dope man cave.

Some of my favorite UConn collection is 4 National Championship team posters you get at the games (1999 signed by Calhoun, 2004, 2011 and 2014). Also have the Sports Illustrated Championship covers framed and a pair of custom UConn branded Air Jordans.

Curious if anyone else has recently gotten back into sports cards or what other memorabilia y'all are collecting, UConn or otherwise?
Used to collect comics as a kid. My entire collection was destroyed in a flood because of a neighbors stupidity. Among my prized collection was a #1 issue Green Lantern. Gone.

Kemba rookie cards (PSA 10) were going for $200 - $300 in June. Now his rookie card has been selling for $500 in the past month.

Crazy thing is, this trend in pricing appears to be the norm not the exception. The sports card market have almost doubled overnight, and these are for modern cards too, not Mantle rookies. Crazy!

Edit: The day after the OP his rookie card PSA 10 sold for $168 on eBay. Yesterday the same card sold for ~$500.

I probably had thousands of dollars worth of cards from the early to mid 60's that are now still in some matter of gas in space. My mother was punishing my brother for firing BBs through 3 windows in the house by burning up the cards in 1967 and mistook my collection for his crappy ones. As I walked up the driveway from 7th grade I saw her standing over the metal trash can with smoke coming out of it and a poop eating grin on her face. I was laughing when she told me what she was doing but that turned to tears when I saw my boxes gone out of the closet and my brothers still there. I love you Mom but for crying out loud...………..

We moved recently, which prompted me to look at my baseball card collection, which I have been saving since my childhood. I opened boxes for the first time in ten years in order to uncover my treasures - row after row of unopened box sets from the 80’s, and seemingly priceless rookie cards sealed in plastic to protect against elements and age.

Many of my best pieces still had the price tag from when I bought or traded for them. I was very sad to then learn that most were worth less than what I paid for them over 30 years ago. I’m thinking about using then for kindling this winter.

Yeah I have like a full Topps 87 set (I think) and a full upper deck 97 set that are worth like 50 bucks combined

I wish,]. My mother cleaned me out while I was at college. Many greats gone to the dump! Mantle, Maris, Williams, and earlier.

Is she still alive?
