Why, given tourney history?

#2 overall recruit Dylan Harper in America is from NJ and his brother played under Pike and their other big fish has a relationship with Brevin Knight (assistant under Pike).

Not to mention they've been pretty good, play in a good league, and have a great home court.

Rutgers was called a sleeping giant for so long it shouldn't be surprising if it finally happens

There's this:
Adidas $$$ and personal relationships

also this:
Their head coach is a good recruiter and developer of talent. I would assume he received an education from a pretty good school.

and this is important too.
Because tournament history doesn’t matter. It’s about the coach, the conference, the PT, the NIL, the surrounding team.

A hibernating giant. Maybe spring is here.

They have the same institutional/environmental benefits as us with a better overall conference situation, so it makes sense that it could catch fire in NJ.

Barely detectable pulse for a long time. Amazing a school with that many upsides went so long between tournament appearances.
Unlike a lot of people here, I don't begrudge them anything. I don't want to lose recruits, obviously, but their fans suffered long enough

....."head coach is a good recruiter and developer of talent"......sorry, he has ONE victory in the NCAA tourney in 18 years.....somehow he fell in with a group of desperate incompetents who guaranteed him 30M......ridiculous.

This thread is a slight step above from worrying about Syracuse. Which I actually kinda dig now, because Rutgers is ahead of Syracuse on the pecking order. That’s gotta sting our Canadian friends.

After UConn I follow RU for lots of reasons! Very hopeful that this recruiting class with Gavin will put them deep into the tournament. My family was not happy about losing Cam

Be nice to Steve Pike. He still bleeds UConn blue and white. Maybe you are too young to know.

A fantastic job from the coaching staff to build connections and foster relationships. They're right on the edge of turning a corner into being a really good team, but haven't been able to fully do it yet. Personally I hope they succeed and get a lot of great local recruits (as long as they don't come at our expense) and turn into a tournament team

I'm sure they'll be willing to use up all the NIL available to them so it's not like nobody is getting money there, but it's refreshing to see recruiting being done the "right" way. Always going to root for Pikiell. Also very willing to take Cam Spencer from him. Recruiting is a super complex beast

......umm....maybe not.....went to EC with Joey Whelton....who thank God never took a dime from frigin' SUNJ.

Their fans suffered... who cares ? I don't give two shytes about any other team's fans for one single, solitary second

I also went to EC with Joe. Class of 73. Had our 50th reunion last night. Great time.

Man F Buttgers. I could give a rip about any of them on staff there, we go head to head a bunch in recruiting.

RU the sleeping Giant?…maybe ..we sure keep hearing it. Heck, it Was supposed to happen when Fred Hill went there. One day they will be good, I guess..

They Choked away a season by going 3-7 and then losing to Hofstra. And then lost one of its better players to transfer you guys. and that coach somehow saw the season slip away while Spencer (according to as big an RU fan as I know) just didn’t get off enough perimeter shots. His percentage was not the issue. But going like 2-5, 1-3 etc is not going to cut it. He Hit more than 2 from deep one time in those last 10 games before selection Sunday disappointment. That kid needed to get off more shots. it ain’t like they had 6 other scorers who could pick up the slack. Some of that may be the kid…but, He is adamant that Pikiell deserves every bit of heat for that team’s failure.

"I'm recruiting Ohio, I'm recruiting Michigan," Pikiell pointed out. "And I've got a shot at getting these kids, because they know the Big Ten. Maybe Michigan's not recruiting them for basketball, but they're pretty good players, we can jump right in there as a Big Ten program."

"And now," he added, "we go all the way to the West Coast."

"He's a great kid, he can really shoot the basketball," Pikiell said of Spencer. "He's got a good toughness about him. When he first came here, everyone questioned, 'Can he play at this level?' Early on, he struggled a little bit. Once he figured it out, he was a good player."

Spencer is also a deft passer with a high basketball IQ. He may not be known for the in-your-face defense Hurley loves, but that may not be as necessary on a deep UConn squad.

"I had to have him do a lot of things," Pikiell noted. "We don't have as many guys as UConn does. We're still not as sexy as UConn is. We're getting a little sexier, so we can attract some more of those guys."
