Gomes at his best (which couldn't have been anticipated when he was in HS) wasn't close to the level of player of either Caron or Emeka.

You’re right. Gomes did start on an NBA team for 5 seasons and averaged double figures. Shot 37% from 3 in his last two years as a starter and made $22 million. He won a d league award in his mid 30s in 2016. Not bad for a 6’ 6 power forward from Waterbury. As a Waterbury native I always rooted for him.
