What High School players did you watch live in HS and say 'NBA'

Calvin Murphy vs Danbury HS. The Hatters were thrilled to hold him to 38 points!

Dean "The Dream" Memminger playing in what must have been an AAU game at the War Memorial gym in Danbury.

Charles Smith when he played for Harding.
Yup. Me too.
Before him, Luckett, Frank Oleynick, Wes Matthews .... Not exactly great results.
Bagley had a bit of a run.
Phil Nastu (Bassick and University of Bridgeport basketball) pitched for the SF Giants. Random

Old school MBIAC

i’m sure there are some i haven’t mentioned
saw a real lot of hs basketball from 60s -90s
not much after that
feel fortunate to have seen so many great players
and games in what was a great time for hs basketball before the prep schools took most
of the good players and yes i did see Dave Hicks
play when i was 9 years old lol
unfortunately injuries legal issues bad decisions
prevented many of these players from getting to the league
Mickey Heard (Cross) was a beast. Only 6 feet 5 inches.
Alex Scott and Clint Davis was a nice backcourt duo.

I saw a double header with St. Bernard featuring Harold Pressley followed by the Celtics at The Hartford Civic Center years ago. Pressley impressed me and he did go on to play on the 1985 NC team at Villanova and in the NBA for a few years. I also remember Rocket Rod Foster of St. Thomas Aquinas before he went to UCLA. Unbelievably quick.

.-.
Seems many of you ,like me, saw a lot of great HS basketball at old New Haven Arena and New Haven Coliseum.
Cross and Hill House at Payne Whitney was electric.
Channel 8 and Dick Galliete also brought game into our living rooms. Back in the glory years,a guy named John Gentile published "Connecticut High School Basketball" once a week. . A great read.

Kinda cheating, but the McD's AA game was at Springfield. Chris Webber and Glenn Robinson were just better than everyone else on the court and it wasn't too hard to predict they'd be going on to the NBA.
Donyell Marshall was in that game and did not impress, probably because it was one of those run and gun games. Same thing with Richard Hamilton a few years later. We were wondering if they would be good at UConn.........

Calvin Murphy, Earl Kelley and Rashamel Jones in state high school playoffs and Donyell Marshall in the McD's game in Springfield before he committed to UConn. Earl was an enigma. Made shots at big moments but seemed blase' about the first quarter or first half. Too bad for him and us fans!

.-.
Walt Luckett, Mike Gminski (I used to play against his dad in local adult/rec )

Tony Hanson
Jim Ambromitis

I grew up in Waterbury. As a kid, I didn't think about the NBA, but I knew they were good

I never saw him play, but I lived right behind Lower Merion High School from 1993-96. All anyone in town talked about was Kobe Bryant.

Remember watching Tyson Wheeler light up my high school (Ledyard) in some LA Gears that lit up every time you jumped..
Also his father was a guidance counselor at my school.
Also, RIP his daughter.. sad story

watched Vinny Del Negro in HS and he was heads and shoulders above the other players. Made a nice career for himself via the game.

.-.
My high school played and beat Tyson Wheelers New London team in the state tourney. One of the best games I ever experienced. Vin Baker was in our conference and he seemed damned good at 6'8" at the time but didnt realize he was going to the NBA.

I’ve seen very little high quality high school basketball (almost all games FCIAC) but Parrish Edmond completely floored me when I watched him at ND-Fairfield before he moved onto PSA. Not sure if he’s an NBA guy, but when I watched him he was only offered by Sacred Heart at that point and thought the high-majors are coming soon. No chance he lands at Sacred Heart.

Author Pat Jordan in 1979 wrote "Chase The Game" Great read if you are a Bridgeport HS basketball fan.
Besides Bridgeport and New Haven, Hartford had some NBA talent in high school as well. Rick Mahorn from Weaver and Marcus Camby and Michael Adams to name a few from Hartford High. Bob Nash was also from Hartford High earlier and then played at Hawaii.

Randy Lavigne grew up near me in Hartford. He helped South Catholic win the basketball state championship in 1974. But I thought his best sport was baseball which he played at UConn along with basketball. HIs little league team (8-Ball) was 18-0 I believe helped by his pitching and hitting. He even participated in the Hit, Pitch and Run at Yankee Stadium and I think came in second. That was baseball's answer to football's Punt, Pass and Kick. But as good as he was, his ascent stopped at AAA for the Iowa Cubs. That just showed me how special you need to be to make MLB.

On another thread a post by @AidanFan20 made me think of young high school ballers I saw in person (at their HS games), who I knew would make an NBA roster...
I'm guessing that was my post about the incredible Jason Kidd. For the other team, it must have felt like they were playing 5-on-6. Guy had a motor that was always zooming! Saw him play some 70 HS games, and by the summer before he started at Cal, I was telling people he was first-ballot HOF material.

Also saw Kevin Love of Lake Oswego HS in Oregon... some 50 games' worth. I was sure he'd have an excellent career in college and NBA.

Likely saw 6 years of HS players for Bob Hurley Sr. at St Anthony when it was open. Lived a block away at the time in Jersey City would sneak there for games. Not many made it to a college or NBA but his system was amazing - never saw a loss.

Have never seen any NBA player while he was in HS. Saw Tyler Kolek when he was in 6th grade. Thought he had NBA level court awareness, instincts and BBIQ. Didn't expect he'd have the size or athleticism. But he was dominating much older kids in that game.
