I'm listening to Ron Artest campaign to be Knicks head coach. We've seen ex-players without much tenure get a head coaching job. We've seen guys who have really only coached in Europe. We've seen young up and comers like our own MD with OKC? We've seen college guys without much nba experience. What are the key attributes?

It may be funny for some for Artest to be considered for the Knicks job, but is it that funny? (Yeah. It's pretty funny)

What do GM's want? A guy who stays hands off of roster composition? What does an owner like Dolan want? There is no right answer.

What would you want if you were an owner or GM?

A question as old as time itself. Unfortunately no one really understands what goes through Dolan’s brain most of the time so it’s near impossible to know what he wants in a coach.

All it takes is a contract with an NBA team. That is the only criteria.
I was going to say something similar but figured I’ll hold off on the sarcasm for once.

Since coaches, in all sports, get fired at a very high rate there is no good answer to this question. But I’ll throw out the suggestion of being a good leader and communicator.

I would not hire Ron Artest to manage the night shift of a 7-11.

.-.
I want a grownup with a high EQ and knows the game instinctively. That's why Hurley will get an NBA job when he wants it.

There absolutely zero criteria.
An old UConn team manager is the head coach Oklahoma City.
JJ Reddick was a podcaster with no prior coaching experience.
Roy Rubin got the 76ers head job after seeing an ad in the Philly Inquirer.
Calling head coaching hires in the NBA a crap shoot is a insult to craps.

I do agree. This is why I'm surprised that for the Knicks job everybody is stressing someone with prior nba coaching, preferably head coaching experience. A lot of people, blew off the Dan Hurley possibility, whether he wanted it or not, as not right for a team that expects to be back in the Econf finals next year. Would Hurley or Jay Wright really need a few "learning years"???

Recommended prior experience includes:

-Athletic Director at Kutsher's Hotel in the Catskills
-Head Coach for the Piratas de Quebradilas of the National Superior Basketball League
-Head Coach for Benetton Treviso of Lega Basket Serie A
-Spurs GM
-Broadcaster for the 76ers

This is pretty brilliant. Good work.

I know this is mostly joking, but Daigneault does not belong in this discussion. He's been identified as a coaching savant at every stop since he was an undergrad

But does anyone understand what goes through Ron Artest’s brain? Him and Dolan might be made for each other

The ability to accept a nice paycheck understanding that a star player or two can get in the owner's head and get you fired.

it only takes what the ownership wants
Unless if its the Lakers - then its what LeBron wants
