My son is a prof at the SUNY school that is immediately adjacent to the Dome. His kids have become big Cuse fans. My son used to be at VTech and says Blacksburg is more cosmopolitan than Syracuse. But because it's got long, often miserable winters, people there know how to party and restaurants are almost always packed. I went to a summer session of SU Law. One of my boys escaped the jaws of SU despite a nice aid offer when he got another from another school. I have 2 cousins who are SU grads.

I came away unscathed. I loath the Cuse, and you can survive it too. Godspeed.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but we're not talking about shooty-hoops... in this place, nothing is bigger than UConn FB.

Congrats on your daughter's success, TMB, it's nothing to be upset about... Just wait until September 29th 2018; the Huskies will turn the Orangemen into doormats on the gridiron, and raze the Carrier Dome on the way out!

Yeah, yeah, whatever. As far as Syracuse goes, our rivalry there is predicated on basketball primarily. But I'm a fan of all of it.

God, I hope people don't bring that ridiculous "shooty-hoops" lingo from Reddit to the Yard.

Very proud of my daughter as she has had a great high school career and is heading to college. Was down to UConn, Penn state and Syracuse. She chose the Orange. Ugh. No idea how to react. Wish she did not get the aid she received that would have made it too expensive! Of course I am proud and excited for her but I am also freaking out a bit. I hate the Cuse almost more than any other school (hello Duke). What do you do in this situation?
One way to make the best of a bad situation is when your daughter comes home on weekends or calls during the week, get as much dirt as you can on Boeheim, the football program, the ACC, the school in general, and spread it all over the internet.

It's all about contrarianism. It works well. You should have told her that staying so close to home for college is a mistake and you think Syracuse would be a great school for her. You then keep emailing her articles about the school, buy a big bagful of oranges at Whole Foods but tell her there's a Wegman's in Syracuse and you can't wait to shop there when you visit her several times during the year. The more you encouraged it, the less likely she would have accepted. "Sorry to disappoint you dad but I'm not sure Syracuse is a good fit for me." "Are you sure?" "Yes" . "OK honey, keep looking".

I imagine that conversation went pretty much like this:

TMB4405: Hi honey, what's up?

Daughter: Dad I made my decision on where I want to go college.

TMB4405: That's great honey. I am so happy for you! You will love Storrs!

Daughter: Dad, I'm going to Syracuse.

TMB4405: You're nothing to me now. I don't want you in my house. I don't want to see you in the casinos...

Daughter: Casinos....?

TMB4405: When you want to come and see your mother I want a day's notice so I won't be here....

Daughter: Dad?

TMB4405: Get out.

Daughter: Wait, are you serious?

TMB4405: No, no honey, I'm just glad you found a place that you like. Come here give me a hug.

[They hug as TMB4405 stares into the distant with cold lifeless look in his eyes. Scene fades to black.]

I'm glad she got a good scholarship. How is she going to pay the rest? Did she find a place to live on breaks yet?

You forgot one thing, as the scene fades to black, "Sound of Silence" starts to play:

"Hello darkness, my old friend, I've come to talk to you again..."

Whenever Syracuse asks for donations flip them the bird and send that money to Storrs.

Ish happens despite best efforts @TMB4405. My oldest son who hasn't missed a UConn Bowl game and road-tripped all over the east coast w/ us for UConn Football/Basketball ended up @ Temple (highly ranked Sports Management program and they really made it worth our while). After 3 years, he's still a Husky @ heart but gets bi-polar @ times w/ the "we". I have to ask who is "we" when discussing sports. Cherry and White is minimal @ our house (especially when he's @ school and NEVER @ the breakfast/dinner table;)). There is a block T decal on my wife's SUV but I'm clean!

I will say I played the weather card, I found out it is one of the "gloomiest" cities in America, not to mention the winters. I guess she did not buy that.

It was tough trying to play it straight. I bleed UConn blue as an alum and rabid fan. I raised her as a husky fan. Tuff to take. She vows I will be wearing an SU hat at least. Maybe briefly but I am seriously in a bit of pain.

Whenever you wear the hat, wear this t-shirt:

What are you to think of it? That you have one less child because this one is now dead to you.

Serious story. My 26 year old is into sports broadcasting, and knew he wanted to learn that in college. He did not apply to Syracuse. Why? Because he knew that not only would my other son and I have to disown him -- he would have to disown and hate himself. So he didn't look.

That is what real UConn fans do.

I knew I could count on you guys to make me laugh and feel better. Days later it still stings. We have agreement that I will wear the hat for 20 minutes during the summer after her freshman year. No stickers on the car, no donations and when I do visit It will be in my best Uconn gear.

Congrats. Support your daughter (I'm sure you will), but that doesn't mean you have to wear Orange caps and shirts.

Exactly 35 years ago, my decision came down to UConn, Syracuse, and Babson College. It was almost a coin flip; Syracuse is a good school. But I'm very grateful now for the choice I made back then.
