We're All Rooting For You, Jana!

I find it unlikely Ice will see time at the five with three centers on the roster. Her natural position is the four.
What "position" did she play this season? Even with Serah added to the equation, she most likely will sub in for Jana or Serah with Sarah staying at the four. We most likely will see two "bigs" on the floor, with Sarah at the four, when Geno isn't going with a small lineup.
But there's nothing wrong with what you are suggesting, I just don't agree with it until I see how the three "centers" work out.

Jana's skill will continue to grow over the years. I expect her to be all american by Junior year. This means
that her shooting ability, (which she used to have when playing for Egypt) will re-emerge. She can even shoot the 3. I expect her mid range shot and faul shots will show more accuracy. Jana's skills, attitude and team spirit should soar by her senior year.

I like the sound of AA by junior year. But I wonder if she'll get enough playing time this coming season to make that happen by the following season. I kinda want to see it, however it comes to pass.

I watched that crossover a number of times and slowed it down. Looks like it was an unintentional thing which happened when she momentarily lost control of her dribble. I might be wrong, but regardless, it left her defender's shorts on the floor!
I'm a big Jana fan. That move was so good my first thought was that it had to be an accident. I hope she removes all doubt and does it again. GO JANA!

It is perhaps less about playing time and more about intrinsic talent (hands and feet for a big) or the lack thereof. Boneyarders have a tendency to always deem their favorite(s) to be as an All American in- waiting (something reserved for only 15 or so players in the country each year). I'd be equally or more impressed by a list of all the Uconn WCBB alumni that played an "indispensable" decisive role in the teams success, though never achieving All- American status (e.g. Nika Muhl, Stacy Hansmeyer, Maria Conlon etc., etc., etc., etc.......) - might make a good thread, i.e. "best players that never made anybody's All- American team"

With Serah joining the team we may have to wait another year to see all that Janah can be.

Hookshot your thought is right on. Yet, I think that Jana will be one of the exceptions. In my view, she is AA bound. I believe that ( videos of her before Uconn support this) she has the talent. I think that the Serah, Sarah combination will be so dynamic that she will be lots of time this coming year. That way, she can fulfill her Uconn destiny, i.e., to be among the Uconn great (Bigs)

I think Jana expected more from herself last year, so I believe she is in Storrs through the Summer to work on a number of things: reaction time in switching defense, timing in blocking shots, reading and reacting in offense......she probably will also work on better control of her body. Should she improve in those things, she will be a real problem for the opposition......we may see the changes gradually but I expect to be agape watching Jana do things by the end of the season.
She could show major improvement this year. She already contributed to the national championship, after a " slow start " to her season. And she seems determined.

Well, don't include Nika Muhl in your quest or your thread. Nika made AP Honorable Mention in 2023 and again in 2024.

I'm still expecting big things from Jana. I think that we forget that last season was her first season against D-1 opponents and referees. Starting may have put more pressure on her than any of us know. To me, she was treated like Natalie Butler was treated. She came into UConn as the current Freshman of the Year. So everyone knew she could play. She tried her best but was also "foul prone" which made her constantly looking over her shoulder. Hopefully this fall with Sarah, Sareh and Ice all sharing time at the 5, Jana is going to settle in and play like she did in the Final Four but play this good for more minutes per game.
If she has even more help at the 5 spot, the better.
The sky is the limit.
And she was coming back from a torn achilles. That's a tough injury to deal with

Good word. Don't see it that much anymore.

I’ve touted Jana’s potential for a couple years now, and caught a lot of flak for it from folks who mistake assessments of potential for claims about achievements yet to happen. Fine. I get it. That’s what fans and fan-critics are like.

Here’s what I saw this season and what I hope for next season. Jana is big and strong, can run the court, set a solid screen, and can drive the lane. She can also fumble the ball away on rebounds and putback attempts. And her low post moves are limited and she flubs those a lot too. And the way she moves is not ‘compact.’ She can commit fouls merely because she throws her arms about. Her free throws were an adventure and she hasn’t recovered her midrange shot from high school.

But all these things can improve merely from practice. She has the essential things that can’t be coached: courage, a big heart, strength and mobility. CD and Jamelle will work with her on the rest, and playing in practice against Sarah and Serah will certainly help her (and Ice) in all these areas. I am confident that second-year-Jana will have cleaned up a lot in her game.

In particular, I suspect we’ll see an improvement in her high-post passing. Currently, she was mainly limited to handoffs in the high-post. Sarah was the primary (and almost exclusive) high-post passer last season. Serah will add to this aspect of Geno’s offense, but so will Jana and Ice. Similarly, I expect Jana’s low-post defense to improve. And if she develops an elbow-jumper, I think her minutes will expand. I also expect to see Ice working on her face-up game including an elbow jumper. This is what Sarah and Serah already can do very well and their example will help Ice and Jana a lot.

Four wishes. All doable imo.

1. Improve FT percentage.
2. Dramatically decrease missed layups.
3. Cut down fouling.
4. Make her low post moves quicker to avoid double teams.

The team needed her 10 to 15 minutes a game last year. Geno has other options next season if her progress slows.
Nice list, but I would add the ability to knock down the foul line jumper, which all the great UConn bigs of teams past possessed

Galaxyshooter and victor64, Jana can improve and accomplish are that you list......IMHO!!

Great analysis in all areas Bone Dog. Love your inclusion of "a big heart, strength and mobility" Would also add her desire to be better. You can just see it in her eyes and shake of her head whenever she didn't 't live up to what she should or could have done on a particular play. It's something that all coaches want to see: the motivation and drive to improve. She will get better.

Adding to your accurate assessment I would also add that I think she will advance partly because of having to go against Gandy in practice. With her and a shot blocker like Serah, refining Jana's interior game should come much quicker. The expression "the game slowed down for her" is appropriate here too.

Jana's instincts and quick decision making sometimes seemed rushed to me. On the other hand I think where she played before Uconn, and the level of competition, explains how raw she was when she got here.

Some like you and me have watched significant game footage of Jana in her international competition. From that we know she has far more skills than shown thus far. Also it was clear she never was really a post up C in those games, more like a big forward who often had to come out to get the ball and then create her own offense, partly because her guards didn't have a clue as to how to feed the post.

That means being turned into a traditional low post C against major division 1 competition was a complete transformation for her, not even vaguely resembling how she was used previously, and it showed. The good news is she was still pretty effective despite shaky decision making and still has way more upside, as the game slows down for her.

Still has way more upside”…Those are the words I think we can all agree with! I (and I hope most others here) still think she’s going to be a major stud before her time here is done. It’s really imo more a question of when rather than if. I’m expecting a big jump next season.

So true. And it’s the same story with Blanca. We’re all very hopeful, but it’s all based on assessments of play and experience that isn’t exactly commensurate with the high school prospects we’re used to forecasting for. This makes for some surprises, good and bad.

I did not comment on Jana's skill set on offense earlier because the fundamentals are sound. The issue is confidence, to feel the time space she has available to execute what she wants to do in order to score and not feel rushed to do everything just right......once that sense of time expands for her in game situations in a UConn uniform, the fluidity with which she has done those same things even under pressure in representing Egypt will begin to show itself.

The sophomore season will help.....

BTW, I always thought Ice was suffering from the same kind of pressure...always looking a little bit rushed....but her promise of greater levels of performance was demonstrated when she had to deliver as the last big in the Big East tournament her freshman year. The skill set on both sides of the ball are there but she still hasn't reached an "intuitive just play level" when she is on the floor. That tournament performance shows that she is more than capable of it.

I am looking forward to both showing more growth this year, even under conditions when Coach G decided to fill his roster much more than ever before because of so many injuries these past several years.

3 things to work on above all else:

1) Never ever ever ever bring the ball down after an offensive rebound. Go right back up with it.

2) Footwork. Thousands of simple pivot move practices.

3) Develop a baby jumper like Serah has. It will change your game.
