I’ve touted Jana’s potential for a couple years now, and caught a lot of flak for it from folks who mistake assessments of potential for claims about achievements yet to happen. Fine. I get it. That’s what fans and fan-critics are like.
Here’s what I saw this season and what I hope for next season. Jana is big and strong, can run the court, set a solid screen, and can drive the lane. She can also fumble the ball away on rebounds and putback attempts. And her low post moves are limited and she flubs those a lot too. And the way she moves is not ‘compact.’ She can commit fouls merely because she throws her arms about. Her free throws were an adventure and she hasn’t recovered her midrange shot from high school.
But all these things can improve merely from practice. She has the essential things that can’t be coached: courage, a big heart, strength and mobility. CD and Jamelle will work with her on the rest, and playing in practice against Sarah and Serah will certainly help her (and Ice) in all these areas. I am confident that second-year-Jana will have cleaned up a lot in her game.
In particular, I suspect we’ll see an improvement in her high-post passing. Currently, she was mainly limited to handoffs in the high-post. Sarah was the primary (and almost exclusive) high-post passer last season. Serah will add to this aspect of Geno’s offense, but so will Jana and Ice. Similarly, I expect Jana’s low-post defense to improve. And if she develops an elbow-jumper, I think her minutes will expand. I also expect to see Ice working on her face-up game including an elbow jumper. This is what Sarah and Serah already can do very well and their example will help Ice and Jana a lot.
