Week 9 preview (Jan. 3-9)

FWIW, I think this is right. I don't even find SCAR to be that compelling of a #1, they're just more compelling than everyone else. I do wonder whether all the COVID fatigue, state of the world, and everything else has gotten to college athletes and may be affecting the consistency and quality of play. In some respects, last season was a bit easier, because there wasn't even an effort to get "back to normal." This season, campuses are going in and out of remote teaching, there've been a million cancelled games, and I'm sure there are behind the scenes issues with practice protocols, testing, and limited freedom of movement to ensure COVID compliance. For all those reasons, I guess I'm not surprised I've generally been kind of underwhelmed by the top teams so far this season.
IMO, a very good post. It is too bad players have to go through what they are experiencing today, in all sports and levels.

It's time for you to start thinking positively. Change that to a smiley face.:)

:)

They are honoring S. Augustus tonight

12 ranked teams in action tonight
including 4 ranked vs ranked matchups!

We better get our fill tonight, because Friday through Sunday features only one top 25 clash (NC State–Notre Dame). Otherwise a lot of blah-looking games, in addition to cancellations.

Northwestern still has Iowa's number. I found it, uhmm, interesting that Joe McKeown's daughter was calling the game.

They won’t be. Decent possibility they will come away with a win.
I was not right about LSU getting blown out but my suspicions were correct about LSU getting killed inside. Don't have the horses to rebound with SC.

Burton was sublime with 8 steals including a last play when game still in doubt when she did a Paige and just stole Caitlin's cookies by knowing where she was going to pass into Czinano

Thought she did a great job -- never sensed a bias from her, personally!

More accurately, Paige has been doing a Burton all this time, as Burton has been a nation-leader in steals for multiple years now.

ND and Louisville are both in the protocols... so a bit of a schedule change.

There were actually 3 Pac 12 games tonight. Better than only 1 like last week. Arizona held of Washington St. and it doesn't look like Colorado had much trouble w/ USC.

Is Pili ever going to be able to get back to her freshman level form? Might be just too many injuries and what she is now is what she's going to be.

Stanford held off several rallies by Oregon. Lexie Hull went off, 33 pts, 7-10 behind the arc.

The trio of Ducks who have missed most of the season--Sabally, Rogers and Paopao--scored almost all of their points in this game.

Stanford wins the assists battle, 17-4.

Could a little coaching improve Sabally's passing?

While Stanford looked every bit a Championship level team, I was also impressed by Oregon. Given PaoPao and Rodgers have played so few minutes this season, they were impressive. And other Oregon players looked pretty good to me. I see Oregon ending up the #2 team in PAC-12 this year assuming no more injuries. Watching the Arizona game, they are a solid defensive team, but their offense is not championship level. Looking forward to the Arizona weekend in the state of Oregon next week.

And poof like smoke, there goes the lone ranked-vs.-ranked matchup that was left on the schedule for the weekend.

I really appreciate everyone posting about these changes. I am not able to keep up with them.

Stanford is playing Gonzaga Sunday as a fill in game. Second time playing each other this season.

I’m giving a shout out here to Long Beach State for also volunteering to step in.

I found it really interesting Tara’s remark that it’s been hard to get PAC 12 teams to reschedule against Stanford so they can open up more dates later.

Kentucky v. South Carolina say hello. Or were you talking about ranked ACC teams?

@Plebe you still have the Louisville Miami game scheduled for Sunday. It threw me until I saw the post that the Cardinals are in protocols.

We're getting a chance to see a rematch that typically wouldn't happen. The last game was close. Could be another interesting game.

This thread subscribes to the Boneyard rankings :) , in which KY missed the latest cut.

But fair enough; Kentucky did just beat Georgia, gaining a measure of empirical credibility previously lacking.

One thing about Kentucky over the past several seasons... whenever I want to write them off as being overhyped and overranked... they manage to get a surprising victory over a ranked foe.

They're good for about one or two of those per season. Which to me attests to the chronically soft upper-middle of conferences like the SEC, whereby overrated teams hand out overrated victories to some opponents.

Georgia lost at home to both Georgia Tech and LSU, teams they were expected to beat. But yet pulled off what I consider the second-biggest upset of the season at NC State. Teams are just all over the place.
