Week 7 - NCAA Football

Alabama played like they had money on South Carolina. How does a team of future NFL players almost drop a game to a mediocrity like South Carolina a week after losing to Vanderbilt?

UMass needs to stop scheduling 3 SEC teams a year - pointless matchups that do nothing to help the program and simply demoralize their players. Really feel bad for those guys, their MAC return can't come soon enough.

-> UMass spent some $58.44 million on athletics in 2023, including $11.22 million on football, according to Knight-Newhouse data. Bamford estimated his department will take in close to $2 million in profits during the first year of its MAC agreement, after making $500,000 as an Atlantic 10 affiliate (in non-football, non-hockey sports).

As an independent, UMass made $350,000 annually in trickle-down College Football Playoff payouts. That will rise to $1 million once it joins the MAC.

“Being an independent has been an absolute albatross for us,” Bamford said, pointing to challenges of scheduling and recruiting without a conference banner, and lack of shared revenue.

As a MAC member, Bamford expects to play one guarantee game annually (and it will be early in the season, with conference games down the stretch). Funds from buy-games are earmarked for football, Bamford said, but they create financial room elsewhere. <-

Iowa, the team that never scores, absolutely pounding the Washington team that beat Michigan.
Brutal. In their previous losses, mistakes kept them from coming out on top of winnable games. They left no doubt today, got crushed. Special teams were awful in every phase. Coach needs to pick a QB. Shuttling the backup in and out constantly isn't really working very well.

Hidden stat in Army's 44-10 win over UAB - The Cadets were 3 for 7 on third downs. Think about it - 10 possessions, and only seven third downs. That's a lot of yardage on first and second down. Army had 513 total yards - 107 passing (a lot for them, usually) but over 400 rushing (about average).

USF football is an embarrassment. How are they so pitifully coached every year?

Was really hoping that South Carolina would beat 'bama and give us another memorable SEC Shorts. Instead I watched Rutgers get blown up by Wisconsin, so I got some satisfaction today.

And they used to have decent teams in the 00's and last decade if I recall correctly, with their alternate shiny golden helmets.

Not surprised that USC is up 14-3 on PennSt. Nittanies do their regular Franklin flop. The only bigger paper tigers are the Canes.
(Specific of, Cal down double-digits to Pitt.)

Will be interesting track how the west coast teams do in their home/away games this year. So far it seems like teams that are doing 2000+ mile trips are generally losing, but haven't checked?

Future opponent GaState tied with Old Dominion 7-7 at the half at home. State with just 9 yards rushing in the first half.

One more note about the Army game - QB Bryson Dailey accounted for five of the Cadets six TD's (one passing, four rushing). Sorry, my dad was a West Point grad ('45), and they have always been a favorite team.

Using only B1G and ACC conference games:

E @ W 2-4 (both E wins @UCLA)

W @ E 3-7

Watching the Cal vs Pitt game, the combo of Cal's QB Mendoza and TE Endries is almost half Cal's entire offense. Endries is a big target, decent enough speed for good YAC, and gets open seemingly at will. Sammis would do well looking at that film for how to get TEs open over the middle and on sidelines for our QBs to find them.

SC not far from being 5-1 if they could have closed against LSU and Alabama. They had their chances today.

Florida offense having their own temple moment against tennessee, with a goal line fumble

They don’t sell out many games

Classic targeting hit by LSU defensive player on the Old Miss quarterback who was in mid slide. The LSU player hit him with his helmet in the head area! Of course on review the call was inexplicably reversed!

If there's a way to win a game, remain undefeated and still drop out of the AP top 25, Pitt just achieved that. My God was that ugly.

It was ugly, but both teams gave 150%. A win is a win.

On the once and future opponents scoreboard -

'Cuse over NC State 10-7 at the half. Joly 1 catch for 14 Yd TD.
FAU leading 4-1 N Texas 34-27 after 3.
1-4 Rice leading UTSA 23-13 early in the 4th.
Buffalo beat Toledo 30-15
ODU over Ga. State 21-14
Merrimack beat Morgan State 32-24

Nick Saban ain’t prowling that sideline anymore.
At the end of the Vandy game, they had a corner absolutely going huts. He threw his mouthpiece and then proceeded to walk over and kick the football before Vandy snapped it. Saban would never tolerate something like that, and it will be worth watching to see if the discipline of their program slips some.

Ohio State bumbles away a chance to win at Oregon. All this talk earlier in the season about "what is wrong with Oregon?", and now this. Once again, we see that all that counts is winning, hang the style points.
