Week 6 preview (Dec. 13-19)

Kudos to Adia for traveling to NAU as most P5 schools bully their way to solely home OOC games against the lesser schools, especially the in-state lesser known schools-just ask Kim Mulkey or Kara Lawson...
It was a 3-year deal. Two in Tucson, one in Flagstaff, but she wants to extend it with games in both cities. The men have a 10-year deal, but I don't know if Arizona is going up there. I originally thought that the women did this because of the game in Vegas, but she said it was intended this way before the Vegas game was scheduled. It was especially cool since Arizona lost last time they went to Flagstaff during her 2nd season.

They were also supposed to play at UC Riverside this year, but UCR had COVID-19 issues. They went to Chicago State two years ago. They have played at Montana and, I think, one of the Idaho schools. So, it is fairly common for Arizona to travel to a mid-major at least once a year since Adia got here. Needs to happen more across the sport.

10 minutes to tip. Perhaps 300 fans in the Skydome, 250 wearing blue and red. Maybe the smallest crowd UArizona has ever played before?

I think there were like 100 at Chicago State in 2019. Happens when a team hasn't won in years. I am glad that program finally got a win this year.

During the Butts era, you could hear conversations in McKale Center. What a difference 6 years makes. There were almost 9k for the Arizona-New Mexico game last Sunday.

UCLA v. Ohio State has been cancelled. What is it with Ohio State always getting cancellations against teams from California? I remember when they ducked Stanford on account of the fires a few years ago.

McNeese lost back to back games to Cal and Oregon 102-60 and 109-38...and then beat Louisiana Monroe 81-54. So how bad is ULM?

There are plenty of players from Spain playing college hoops in the U.S. Not so many from Portugal. Interestingly 2 of them are going head to head right now for Utah and Utah Valley.

Surprised I haven't seen mention of the fact that BYU continued its utter domination of the Pac-12 by thumping Washington State today by 18.

I really think this is BYU's year to finally win the WCC regular season outright. It's not just the Shaylee Gonzales show this year. Harding and Graham also pack an offensive punch.

Harding has been good her entire career. It hasn't just been the Shaylee show the whole time Shaylee has been there. She overlapped w/ Brenna Chase as well, who could also put the ball in the hoop.

It might indeed be their year though. Zags have shown some chinks in their armor.

Cal Baptist likes living dangerously. Fell behind 21-8 in the first quarter against Santa Clara. Outscored SCU 25-14 in Q4, took a 4 point win. I think that's 2 in a row come from behind wins against teams they maybe shouldn't have struggled with?

edit--ooph, 5-34 behind the arc for CBU today

Iowa beats UCF 69-61. I always knew it was going to one of the Knights hardest games. Glad they fought hard. Strangely our big who has the best offensive skill set never played. Hope she is alright.

Bad news; Arizona - TX cancelled.

Arizona is the team with the problem as Vic is asking for a last second opponent

I didn't get a chance to see Tennessee-Stanford but a pretty unorthodox box score:

Haley Jones had probably the worst shooting night of her career (3-18) but finished with one of the best statlines of her career (18 points, 19 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks). She had this rebound number vs one of the best rebounding teams in the country.

Cameron Brink fouled out in 8 minutes, but on the flip side Tamari Key couldn't take advantage and didn't score a field goal and also fouled out in 16 minutes. Did they both just foul each other on every possession??

Tennessee got outrebounded by 9, even with Brink just getting 2 boards.

Not unorthodox but looks like Tennessee fought back hard. Man I hope Tennessee gets Burrell back soon. The defense, toughness, and grit are there for this team to be excellent but they just need more offense if they want to beat some of the better teams.

UCF’s defense anticipated Iowa’s passes so well. Forced Iowa into some really pathetic stretches where they couldn’t take care of the ball to save their lives. Kudos for battling back each time Iowa’s lead stretched to double digits.

Both teams shot horrible. In the 2nd half CBU pressed Santa Clara and they coughed up the ball a lot. I think CBU scored first 10 points of 4th quarter, took lead, and held on. Britney Thomas/pwr fwd, scored all of her points, 16, in 4th quarter. Last 2 games CBU has taken way too many three pointers instead of going inside. I think I mentioned in a previous post,, against UCSD, that I didnt like game plan, same for Saturday game.

Watched the Stanford/Tennessee game on demand.

Both teams defend and rebound. Both looked pretty vulnerable to string defense, though Stanford ended up hitting a pretty respectable number.

I don't know what the expectation is at this point for Rae, but the Vols would interesting with another scorer. Course they were a struggling offensive team with her last year but they seem like a better team around her this year.

They said on the telecast that Rae is working on Knee exercises, stair work etc but not yet cleared for contact.

Tennessee is much better than I thought they would be this season. Looking forward to the Stanford vs South Carolina game next week.

I still feel like WSU is living off their good (Lucky?) start from last year where everyone thinks they are supposed to be good but yet upon closer inspection, I am not thinking that the Legette-Walker sisters are really making that team all that relevant...

Glad to hear it. I could only watch the Statcast as I wasn't going to get Big 10+ for one game. Good luck the rest of the way.

I just watched the first half of Tenn State vs Stetson this morning. It is 17-17 at the half. That was some bad basketball.
Will not watch the 2nd half.

San Diego answered Texas’ call to play today in Arizona’s place.

They don't really pass the eye test with the way they play, but they are pesky and gritty. The win over Gonzaga suggests they can still be a problem for opponents this season.

Quite the stats bonanza in the DePaul-St. John's game.

Aneesah Morrow with yet another monster game: 29 points on 10-17 FG, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals. What a breakout freshman year she's having.

Sonya Morris with 35 points and 8 rebounds. Lexi Held with 21 points and 6 assists.

DePaul put up 80 shots and made 41 of them, including 11 of 22 from 3.

Leilani Correa with 35 points on 13-19 FG for St. John's.

Oof, Gonzaga. After a nice start, things starting to unravel for them. Seems like they haven't been right since they came back from Hawaii. Got outscored 44-26 in the second half against UC Davis today and lost by 3.

Aneesah Morrow is on my fantasy team! I'm so pleased by this performance!

Thanks, and good luck to UCF as well!

So I watched the DePaul-ND game and watched both Westbeld and Dodson (50 points) have their way with Aneesah Morrow (19 pts, 10 reb, 6 Turnovers!, 5 fouls) who, yes, she is a nice add for DePaul but is still drastically undersized to play the post position for a team with high asperations of a post-season run. I still like Caroline as a better freshman considering what she did against Louisville.
