Week 6 - Dec 9 to 15

Top 3 for sure. Actually its the only rivalry in the country that has the same dynamic as Duke vs Chapel Hill. Top State Private vs Neighboring Flagship. Without looking at a map, I've always assumed that the Cal and Stanford's campuses are close to each other.
About 40 miles. I think that's more space than the triangle.

It's actually a long line segment.

Except for some reason everyone with no formal affiliation to either seems to hate UNC, whereas I feel like most people in Cali just don't really care about Cal one way or the other...

Cal is a fine school but in sports doesn't have anything remotely resembling the winning pedigree that UNC does. Winning is a consistent breeder of resentment among the unaffiliated. Plus, the state of California doesn't have a strong land grant school equivalent to NC State to carry the hate banner.

True, although believe it or not, while UNC is 8th all-time in NCAA championships, Cal is only two behind at 10th. Won't mention who's number one... ;)

Shocking how all those championships in rowing, rugby and tennis haven't riled up the hooligans
In fairness, outside of their men's basketball titles, the field hockey, lacrosse and women's soccer championships aren't exactly going to move the needle much unless you're looking to be an entry level analyst at Goldman...

For sure. I'll venture to say that the rabid fan interest (and accompanying hate) is by and large about basketball. Outside of sports, of course, there's a natural rivalry/antipathy much as there is, say, between UT and TAMU, Bama and Auburn, etc.

I've heard of a tale of two halves, but this is a bizarre alternating by quarter thing we've got going on. Q1 Washington 20-11. Q2 Utah 20-9. Q3 Washington 21-9. Q4 Utah 23-7 w/ 30 seconds left (including 15-2 first 5 minutes of the quarter).

I have zero confidence in this Washington team to close a game out. Gonna fall to 0-3 to teams w/ a pulse. Those 7 wins against a bunch of chopped liver don't mean anything. Plus they lost a game to one of those chopped liver teams.

Make that 27-7 in Q4. Fire Langley now!
Have you ever tried utilizing your jinxing powers in personnel issues? Perhaps try saying, "Langley's doing a great job and I'm 100% certain that she won't be fired anytime in the next 10 years."

It doesn't work. Whatever power is at work with the jinxing stuff knows the difference between when I'm being serious and when I'm being facetious.

You know I would be abusing the heck out of my powers for nefarious purposes if it actually ever worked in my favor.

I will say, not that I've counted, but UW under Langley in the past 2-3 years seems to have had an inordinate number of late collapses and near-misses. The last second loss to LSU was excruciating and this fourth quarter was just not pretty.

I'll also say, again, I have no idea how Utah beat Notre Dame, other than the weird effect of being played on Gilligan's Island.

It be like Jim Carrey in "Bruce Almighty". Although if you'd include the part where the Bills win the Superbowl, I wouldn't be mad at that. ;)

A tense back-and-forth affair with lots of foul calls at the Breslin. MSU seemed poised to coast down the stretch but then nearly gave the game away with horrendous free throw shooting. Olsen missed a contested midrange jumper that could have won the game.

MSU finished 16-27 on FTs, including 1 of 5 in the last 30 seconds, plus another that was called off due to a lane violation.

Heck of a game. Another big comeback win for the Spartans. I've personally been on the wrong end of one of those, or at least Vandy was. Robyn Fralick gets very little notice, it seems, but I think she is special. What she did last season with an injury riddled team was amazing, and they haven't missed a beat this year.

Yup. That's an area they need to clean up big time going into conference play. Still, impressed they found a way to hold on. They've been close to pulling off the win the last couple times only to come up short. Good experience to build on.

Aryault continues.to do a little bit of everything for the Spartans. Can't teach that type of hustle and heart. One player I'm not mad at for having a COVID year. Don't think she'd be the player she is now under Coach Merchant. The coaching change has been huge for her.

Red Birds got their feathers singed off by State

Come on man . Don't be like that.

Notre Dame up almost 70 points in the 4th and their starters are still in the game.

Watching Duquesne, Meg McConnell is going off. 35 points, 9 steals. She's been a one woman wrecking crew. Canisius was hanging around for about 3 quarters but now it's a blowout.

While it's a loss, kudos to Richmond staying close against Texas. An 11 point loss to a top 10 team is nothing to hang one's head for.
Don't ask me how in the world Richmond lost to Georgetown.
