This is a question for anyone who watched the game or follows Duke closer than I do …

Why is Mair taking 25 shots and Fournier attempting 8? Fournier set an illegal screen with 2;30 minutes to go and Kara took her out and I don’t believe she ever went back in…what’s that about?
The very limited amount ive seen, Fournier has been pretty bad. Missing bunnies, missing free throws. Hard to believe she was really good last year, because from my very limited sample …. She is very unimpressive.

Fournier was fouled on a lot of her attempts, so those aren’t counted in the FG stats. She was 9 of 16 from the free throw line, not so good.

Fournier seemed like a world-beater coming out of high school. She was the go-to player on her team and handled it well. But she hasn’t translated well to the D1 pace of play. Some of it may just be that she’s a slow-footed slender big matching up now against bigger quicker bigs. But I have to wonder if something’s also going wrong in practice.

She's done a good job at Duke, but I feel like the accolades have always outpaced what she's actually done. Also the roster turnover is alarming. Everyone loses players in this current age, but it seems like she's losing key players on an annual basis. For someone who is supposed to be one of the hip and cool younger coaches that players want to play for, you'd think her player retention would be better.

Not sure about steady improvement. Took a step back from Year 3 to Year 4 (although advanced further in the Tourney), step forward again in Year 5, now seem to be taking a big step backward again.
Okananwa leaving out of the blue was alarming since she's been a big contributor the last couple of years. She's the only one that stands out to me, though. Celeste Taylor leaving as a 5th year I didn't find alarming, and same with Day-Wilson who played all over the place. Almost all non-UCONN programs lose an impact player here or there, so I'm not ready to send the distressed signal just yet.

And I thought 2024 was a better season overall than 2023 even with a worse record. Duke was a lot more competitive in big games and advanced further. Even if you disagree with that last statement, I think the program is in a much better state than when she took over.

I think Mulkey likes her teams to have swagger. I think that has a lot to do with her scheduling. And I know they haven’t played anyone. But I am impressed with the weapons that LSU has at their disposal.

Who have we seen truly develop and get better over 4 years under Lawson?

UNLV 2-2) tips at Desert Financial Arena against ASU (4-0) at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.

Preseason I'm not sure if any pundit would have predicted the records of these two teams at this point in season.

A number of players to watch in this game.

It all begins and ends with McKenna Brackens the transfer from UNLV. She was dominant in the last performance and I know Lindy with her familiarity with McKenna is going to scheme up defensively.

Sophomore Meadow Roland is averaging a double-double in the early going and I know Molly Miller has this top of mind as she prepares her squad.

But let's face it this game is going to come down to guard play - Aaliyah Alexander leading scorer for the running Rebs who had six turnovers in their last game in addition to 18 points on 8 of 20 shooting.

Gabby Elliott who registered a double-double in her last and is provided outstanding leadership for Molly Miller.

A potential issue in the game is Last Tear Poas recovery from a broken hand. She looked great in the last game but this will be perhaps most challenging game so far.

Last game

On the road the Rams gave up 94 points to Montana State and what for me was a real stunner.

The Rebs out rebounded Montana State but turned the ball over 23 times which will be real concern against the Molly Miller defense.

ASU put up 82 and defeated former NAU head coach Loree Payne's Santa Clara Broncos in Tempe.

ASU crushed the Broncos on the boards but for the first time the season gave up more shots than they took. I know Miller will be concerned about this and returning to the initial three games when her squad was to get up significantly more shots than their opponent.

The ESPN matchup has the Sun Devils as a slight favorite probably due to the game location.

Surprised no one mentioned the UNI Creighton game last night, 51-50 loss at home for Blue Jays

The Blue Jays couldn't hold on to three points going into the fourth quarter at home and their attempted miracle when failed shot after a steal rolls off this time expires.

This was an entertaining game.

No offense, but I'd use the word stupefying. This was like watching mop-up time in an 8th grade rout where all the starters are out. I know Creighton was missing their point guard, but their game against UConn is going to be scary.

It wasn't talked about in detail, however it was noted in a couple posts on page 2 of this thread.

Fournier was the ACC Rookie of the Year and first team All ACC last season. Some of you make the most hyperbolic hot takes in order to make a point.

Huh?? She was the leading scorer for Duke last year and made 1st team all ACC. A big part of her problem is free throws. I also just don't think Lawson can coach an offense. She needs to get someone with an offensive mind

Zediker didn’t play for Creighton. I hope her issue isn’t serious. It is going to be a long year for the Blue Jays. She seems like a bright spot. It will be a bummer if she misses a significant amount of time.

Both very true. I’m just saying what I see. She was the leading scorer on an offense-challenged team. Coming out of high school, I expected at least that much and was surprised that she sometimes seemed like a role player instead of the primary pillar of the team. That’s not her fault and I also wonder about what Lawson is doing with her. To my eye, she’s a talent that isn’t being allowed to develop.

That's possible, however development is a two-way street. For all we know, Coach Lawson and the staff are putting in the time and the effort isn't being reciprocated.

It's also possible that she's hitting a bit of a wall and has to work through things adjusting as a sophomore against teams who know more about her playing style compared to her freshman season. We saw something similar happen with Day-Wilson from her freshman season to sophomore season. Question is how Fournier adjusts as the season progresses.

I think you must be right. There is probably something happening behind the scenes with Toby. Whatever the explanation, I hope she works through it soon enough. That said, I don’t see Day-Wilson as a comparable case. She seemed like someone who was overmanaged by people outside whatever team she was on.

It's so easy to get behind with the volume of games. This is a great time of year.

At 6:00 p.m. here in Arizona an addition to the Marquee game I'll be able to watch, listen to NAU versus Arizona

There was a regression regardless. In my opinion, if she allowed external parties to influence her, that impacted her development as it would indicate that she wasn't all in with what Coach Lawson and the staff had planned for her.

For all we know maybe being being over managed by outside parties is part of the Fournier situation right now. With the season barely a month old, I'm waiting for conference play and more ranked team match ups before thinking Fournier doesn't have it.

There seem to be a lot of problems with Duke at the moment. Like a few other 'yarders, I was at the USF-Duke game last night. Here are some observations:

1. Duke took a while to come out of the locker room prior to tip-off and again at halftime. During warm-up drills, the team looked very focused and intense.

2. Fournier uses a shot-put motion to shoot lay-ups, both in warm-ups and in games. No wrist movement whatsoever. Very odd. She seems very uncomfortable at the free throw line, where she does use a lot of wrist action to spin the ball towards the basket. Incredibly long arms and big hands.

3. Delaney Thomas is a beautiful basketball player to watch operate around the basket. Very efficient. Why she doesn't get more touches every game is perplexing. 3 for 3 last night and almost 76% on the season after six games.

4. Jadyn Donovan - what the heck is going on with her? This is a 6'0 starting guard in the ACC who has never attempted a three point shot in her entire college career! Why is she starting - heck why is she averaging 24 minutes a game? Last night the USF defenders completely left her alone - with or without the ball - when she was within two feet of the arc! This allowed the Bulls to collapse their defense anytime Donovan was on the court.

5. The Duke backcourt - nay the entire team - provided no three point threat whatsoever. Not only 4 for 17 the entire game, but only one made three point FG in the first three quarters. The undersized Bulls simply collapsed their defense until Duke could prove they could actually shoot from distance, which only happened when the Bulls were up 21 midway through the fourth.

6. Fuel for the "What-the-Heck-is-Kara-Doing" lynch mob: The refs immediately started off the game calling what appeared to be touch fouls. Okay, so everyone simply adjusts, right? Not so for Duke. Fournier is called for the first foul of the game 77 seconds into the first quarter and is immediately benched for Arianna Roberson, and does not return to the game for almost five minutes. The second Duke fouls goes against Delaney Thomas 47 seconds later and she is immediately replaced by Jordan Wood and does not come back for the rest of the quarter. Roberson (Fournier's sub) commits the third Duke foul 48 seconds after that and is immediately pulled for Riley Nelson and also is also benched for the remainder of the quarter. Brings back recollections of Pat Summit's tough love style at Tennessee.

7. Jose Fernandez attended the game to scout Duke players for possible WNBA draft selections (this is what he told Bull's radio and USF's beat writers last week). He left the arena midway through the fourth quarter with the Bulls up 20. BTW, he says he will also be in attendance for the UConn and South Carolina games in December.

8. This is a much different USF team than the last few years. This year USF plays at a fast pace the entire game and their offense runs through their guards. Their "bigs" are quite undersized, but play tough. Scheduling UCLA, Duke, UConn, South Carolina and Vanderbilt will certainly get them ready for their American Conference schedule.

Maroon & gold vs Kelly green — great visuals in the USC/ND game

Trojans off to a good start in the 3rd and up 8.

Umass rolling over BC 55-39 in 4th
Minutiae still undefeated

Penn st Princeton tight in q2

Pitt getting lit up by Robert Morris 34-17

Kentucky-Louisville is an entertaining game. Cats by 2 at the half. Roberts is going off for the Ville w/ 19. Morgan has been mostly a play maker this year but she's getting her scoring going today for UK.

Princeton and Penn St. are having quite a shoot out. 99-91 in the closing moments.

edit-100-93 final Princeton wins
