Week 16 preview (Feb. 21-27)

Tonight is Gary Blair's last home game as Texas A&M hosts South Carolina on SECN at 7:30 PM Central.
I sorta feel for him that his last year has to end the way it has this year. But the SEC has had some very unexpected turn arounds this year.

I see a lot of A&M fans posting on forums that Blair stayed too long, and him going out with a losing season (potentially) is due to that.

But, last season, they were close to being a #1 national seed. They lost 2 very good front court players to graduation, but did bring some in from the transfer portal. They returned some big scorers for their backcourt.

They did lose two veteran assistant coaches (9 seasons each at A&M) in the offseason (to Auburn and Oklahoma); perhaps that hurt more than most thought it would.

They were SEC regular season champs last year, A&M's last three tournament appearances have made the sweet 16, so its not like they were irrelevant. The problem with this team is multiple things. They lost two great posts and the chemistry and punch inside isn't the same as previous teams. They have been heavily reliant on the three ball. Losing the assistants is another thing, Starkey has been a big asset for every program he has coached at.

It just wasn't meant to be this year given the roster changes and losing multiple assistant coaches. Unfortunate way for Blair to go out but he had a nice career with a national title to his resume. Most coaches will never get to say that.

Watching Duke for the first time this year, they look really average at home vs BC ((losing 44-28 in third).

We are talking about the same team that lost to Virginia.... Yes.... Virginia....

This year's Oregon State Team is a terrible shooting team. Can't make lay-ins, can't make open shots. Utah is a very good shooting team, and our pourous perimeter defense made them look like a WBNA Team.

no doubt in my mind Georgia Tech loses rd 1. This team is so bad to watch offensively, this will not help Uconn in the Net.

I just caught the Notre Dame game. I had been really impressed by Sonia Citron at the U19's last summer. I've seen them several times this year, and I'm wicked impressed by her play. She had something like 23/13/8 and a few steals. Yes, it was against Clemson, but it's her fifth double-double, and she's spent most of the season coming off the bench.

Maya Dodson also looked really good tonight, and I'm definitely a fan of Miles. They've been bitten somewhat by the injury bug, so have a short bench, but they'll be a tough out in the show.

What in the lord's green earth has happened to Duke?

Back in December they looked like a top 15 team. Now they're probably not even top 15 of the ACC.

Good question.

One thing that sticks out is their post play. That has been a large weak spot. Players that transferred in like Green and Lewis haven't panned out as hoped from what I've observed. I'm not even sure what the situation is with Green as she hasn't been on the bench for some games.

The injury to Taylor didn't help either. Being out for several games to let her shoulder heal took away some of the swag and rhythm I was seeing in the team.

Oregon and Arizona with their soft losses are determined to put every Pac-12 bubble team into the NCAA tournament.
Arizona is really missing Cate Reese right now.

No doubt she was hugely missed in the UCLA game, but to be fair Arizona was trailing Washington State in the 4th quarter when she exited.

Cancelling sending Plebe a Duke WBB Sweatshirt...... then again... if I sent one..... it might fall apart before it reached it's destination. :(:(:(:(

DePaul loses to Seton Hall , killer for their ncaa chances. Will now be in the 4/5 game vs Marquette.
Might need to win that and beat UConn to make tourney.

Md holds off Indiana 67-64

Indiana was ranked 5th just a few weeks ago. Now they’re the 5 seed in the BiG tourney.

Beware of Seton Hall. They have won eight of their last nine.

THE REMATCH

Kansas State at Oklahoma today at 4 PM Central on Bally Sports.

Can Ayoka Lee come close to matching her 61 point scoring outburst against OU in Manhattan? I watched that game, and I still don't know how OU couldn't come close to slowing down Lee.

Today, I think OU will just get ahead too quickly and as long as their 3-point shots are failing, they'll kill KSU (who has not played well on the road at all this season).

Lincoln University (PA) the oldest HBCU and a founding member of the CIAA won its first ever CIAA tournament by defeating Elizabeth City State Univ (NC) 67-52. The Lions opened up a tight game in the fourth quarter and won going away. The team has been carrying a heavy heart for the past few weeks as a former star teammate passed away suddenly earlier this month. Though they defeated three straight NC teams to take the title... its hard to root against this team.

In Division III... Local Favorite Greensboro College run to the USA South Finals was thwarted by Berea College last night 82-68. The high scoring Pride was held to 17 points below their season average of 85ppg. The Pride season ends at 25-2, but with no seniors on the roster, and with 2 first-team all-conference players set to return.. the future looks bright over on West Market Street.

Todays final pits Berea vs Southern Virginia.

UCF officially clinches their first regular season title since 2005 by avenging their lone conference loss to Cincinnati by a score of 74-39. UCF lead 33-6 after Q1 and this is the 4th straight opponent held under 40 points.

Pretty impressive season, all things considered, despite the one bad loss to Cincy. Only other losses were to Tennessee and Iowa. A win over Arkansas, plus the sweep of USF. Might be enough to be as high as a 7 seed and avoid the dreaded 8-9 game.
