Week 11 - Jan 12 to 18

Interesting BE game. Marquette had a 20 - 5 lead in the 1st over Seton Hall, and led 20 - 9 at the end of the quarter. At the half, the home team had the comeback to only trail by 3 at 25 - 22.

A real barn-burner in progress in Pittsburgh with George Washington leading Duquesne, 18-14, at halftime.
I know Duquesne lost McConnell to graduation, they must've lost a lot more than that. They are winless in conference still, not even a pale shadow of what they were last season.

Some statistical weirdness going on in Bloomington. Washington is scorching the nets shooting 67% while Indiana is only 42%. Should be a blow out, right? Margin is 14, less than expected. Difference is 3 point shooting. 10 of Indiana's 15 made FG are behind the arc. UW has only made 4 from long distance.

.-.
At the end of the 3rd quarter, Seton Hall called for a shooting foul with 0.1 left on the clock. Marquette's Charia Smith made the second of her two FTs to make the score 41 - 40, Seton Hall.

Whoa, I managed to not jinx my team this time. Washington ran away from Indiana. Hoosiers are winless in conference, I was kinda worried they were gonna get their first W today. Not even close. Despite shooting 12-23 from behind the arc. They were a paltry 11-33 inside the arc, and Washington shot 64% from the floor. 82-63 final, it was as much as 24 point margin.

Indiana is 0-7 in conference. Did anyone predict that? Tough schedule so far, and 2 of the next 3 are Ohio St. and Michigan. Purdue sandwiched inbetween, then Northwestern, Wisconsin and Purdue again. Then the LA school and Oregon, before finishing w/ Rutgers and Penn St. They'll be lucky to win more than 6 games at this rate.

We'll have to start an undefeated in conference thread soon. Among others, San Diego St. and Fairfield both improved to 7-0 and Green Bay is 9-0 already.

And yet the Dukes are better than their crosstown rival.

What happened to Bufffalo? Looks like Legette-Jack to Burke transition was fairly smooth, but now they've fallen off a cliff. 0-5 in the MAC and 2-14 on the season.

edit--they got smoked by Ball St. 101-63 tonight

Once WV missed the first FT they should have just bounced it off the rim with 2 seconds left and the lead. Never understood why teams give the opponent a chance to get the ball, call a TO and advance the ball!

Marta Suarez nails a THREE at the horn...TCU beats West Virginia, 51-50.
Rough night shooting, only 4-19, but she hit the one that really counted. Was 0-5 behind the arc before the last one.

She killed us in Raleigh when TCU played NC State earlier in the year, so I wasn't surprised to see her hit that final THREE.

That was an outstanding defensive display from both teams. And a really exciting game. What? 6 ties and 15 lead changes? Can't ask for more from a basketball game than that.

Intentionally missing can be difficult. Unless your player is pretty skilled, decent chance they miss everything and then the other team gets the ball anyway.

That doesn’t for any reason negate that the better play is to attempt the miss and have the opponent scramble for the ball for 2 seconds. Hit the backboard, but ceding them set up and sub in shooters (Suarez) is not something you hand your opponent.

If you dont hit the rim, it's a deadball. No time runs off. Opponent gets the ball out of bounds. Then you're only up 1, they advance the ball, and only need a 2 to win.

And if TCU cleanly rebounds the intentional miss, immediately call a TO before dribbling then they are in the same scenario.

MY POINT is…they should have tried. There was no reason not to….that I can think of. Their advantage was the lead, the clock and length of the floor…assuming there’s a scramble or not for the rebound.

I just gave you a reason.

I'm with @Vowelguy on this one. Intentional misses are a very high risk tactic. Even if you hit the rim, there's no telling where the rebound will go. And the odds of missing altogether are high. In this case, sinking the second free throw and relying on the defense seems like a better plan. It just didn't work out this time.

And, by the way, I'm really impressed by Marta Suarez this season.

Totally was not expecting Indiana to be 0-7 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota gave it a nice try against UCLA tonight. We made Kiki look like the player of the year out there. Kiki probably had one of her best games I have ever seen. Minnesota played hard and gave it a nice try. UCLA is going to be tough.
