Week 10 - Jan 5 to 11

Ducks steal a win at SoCal. Unexpected and great comeback. Fiso and Etute dynamic sophomores along with occasionally brilliant sophomore Avary Cain. A solid core for that class. Junior Ari Long seals the deal with 3 consecutive 3’s in the last couple of minutes.
Next up a 50-50 game at home vs Michigan State.
Love how Fiso and Etute always compete. Even in the UCLA game when they were getting blown out them 2 were playing super hard. I always liked Ari Long, am really happy for her. As mentioned she didn't play much last year, because they had so many senior guards but she has played a bit more this year and has had some good games. She really came through in the clutch last night. Very good win for Oregon.
On the other end, USC had been in control the whole game. Kara Dunn had one of her better games and looked like a player that can really help this team. I also was impressed with their bigs. Lastly as inefficient as she was Davidson is really impressive. Like she was guarding on the perimeter, then also coming weakside on blocks. She was rebounding and even passing. I've been worried about her shooting percentage but she's one of the few shot creators they have this year. Next year they will be so loaded.

USC was without Kennedy Smith. That's like half their core. I'm not surprised they struggled, especially Jazzy who was 5-20, though she had 13 rebounds and 2 blocks. I'm not quite ready to blame Lindsay for this result entirely, though I wouldn't exonerate her entirely either.

I suspect Lindsay had no choice but to hand the team over to JuJu two years ago. That's what happens when you accept a player like her, absolutely ball-dominant and head and shoulders above the rest of that class. She can't be a simple role player, and she can carry a team to some big wins, as happened both seasons. The first season, she carried them to an Elite Eight appearance with a slender supporting cast. The next season they looked to go further until they lost Juju and ran into the UConn buzzsaw. However, the cost of that sort of star to the rest of the team, and to team morale, can be severe, as the exodus of freshman at the end of last season suggested. That was probably not all because of Juju and may have had something to do with the transfers Lindsay took in over the new recruits -- Iriafen and TVO.

I don't think Jazzy is the same sort of player as Juju, though she is very talented. But, unlike Juju, Jazzy isn't ready to carry a team on her shoulders all season long. Nor is she able to lift them past injuries like the one to Kennedy.

Sadly, I think that Southern Cal is done for the year. They will retool after the season. Hopefully there won’t be any players transferring out and Juju does return to the team instead of turning pro.

What happened in the A-10 tonight? Davidson over St. Joe's 48-36 and St. Bonnie's over Duquesne 46-38. Really? One conference trying to set the game of basketball back a century or so. I would say offense was optional, but apparently no, it wasn't an option at all.

edit--another one, VCU over St. Louis 50-39

Seriously, what in the world is happening in that conference?

Should we start actually taking Texas Tech seriously? Road win against Baylor and about to get one vs. West Virginia.

I think Scott got hurt in that Baylor game; only played 2 minutes. Still a good win. But they are a different team without her.

Okie St. scored 61 in a loss to TCU. Heard had 23 and Wooten had 25 off the bench. Rest of the team combined for 13?!

I haven’t really seen it clipped up before, but I think it is pretty typical. There has been a lot of player of the year talk around Audi; and I have always resisted that claim because I think she is often a net negative on defense.

Is that typical for her? I've seen lots of projecting about whether she'll be able to carve out a spot in the WNBA. If that is how she plays defense, can't see it really working out as a pro.

I think it is. There’s no way she isn’t gassed by the 4th in close games. Especially if they are up and down games.

You have to remeber she checks herself out when she needs a rests it’s usually in the 5 minute mark. If the team needs her to play the entire 4th don’t know how effective she is.

Wow. The “James Harden” aka “el matador defense”. ¡Olé!

That was very glaring. I didn’t notice in their other games. Now I have to watch some of their previous games, again.

My issue with that talk is all she does is score. And NOPY candidates aren’t just who scores the most points

NC State will be without spark plug Zam Jones tonight at Clemson; she rolled her ankle badly toward the end of Sunday's game against Cal. Hopefully, Destiny Lunan and Devyn Quigley can make up for her absence.

Tilda Trygger, who missed Sunday's game with the flu, is listed as "probable" tonight against Clemson.

Major loss. I think Zam is probably a bigger loss than Tilda was for a game. Tilda is good and consistent and a great glue piece who can stretch the floor and has an excellent eFG%, but Zam is as you say, the spark plug. She has really come on as a lead guard, has been the best on the team on penetrating to create for others. She's also the best shooter on the team, granted she's pretty streaky.

I feel like she plays a big role on this particular team as it's constructed as well because KP and Zoe both need room in the paint to operate and Zam creates that spacing. Will be interesting to see who gets those minutes. Lunan fits a similar style of play as Zam, she would provide athleticism, ball handling and creativity, however as a true freshman we've seen her also have growing pains and not always make the best decisions with the ball. Quigley would potentially create floor spacing as a shooter if you wanted to hand the reigns over to Zoe, but you certainly get less play making that way.

Clemson certainly isn't a powerhouse by any stretch, but they do love to shoot the 3, which is something State usually gives up on D in order to clog the paint and make penetration more difficult. A road game without Zam against a team who likes to fire away from deep makes me a tad nervous, if the Tigers are hitting from deep it could be a tricky one.

Louisville wins on the road against Miami, 77-68. 5-0 in the ACC now, State, Duke and UVa trying to keep pace right behind them at 4-0.

(Audi Crooks "highlights" post #48.) When I watched the clips, I hadn't looked at the caption. The first couple of clips, I thought "Crooks set a great screen." Then I noticed the players who scored were from the other team. No exaggeration.

And we saw what happened the other night without Addy Brown. As far as I'm concerned she's the MVP of Iowa State.
