Their two returning players, Anaya Peoples and Destinee Walker, had 13 points and 11 rebounds and 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. I think that’s about what was expected last year.

I think the bigger issue was no Gilbert or Brunelle.

Exactly right.

Vaughn will also help when she gets back but it was expected that she would miss the first chunk of the season as she recovers from offseason surgery.

Westbeld's inability to stay out of foul trouble also hurt. ND couldn't punish Ohio for their lack of size with Westbeld in foul trouble and no Vaughn or Brunelle (or Marshall or Cosgrove or Abdur-Rahim).

NC State's scheduled game with Radford on Sunday has been cancelled due to a COVID outbreak on Radford's campus. That was to be the last warmup for NC State before the big showdown with South Carolina next week.

Too bad Louisville and NC State can't meet for a non-conference game, since both teams now have an opening.

Charlie Creme picked Ohio to win the MAC, which is a pretty competitive conference, so
ND's loss is not a shocker.

Of course its early.. but the MAC might be the 6th best conference this year?? @Plebe I think they have been a top 7 conference in recent years.

There's a reason I selected this as one of my "games of the day" on the weekly docket. As noted, Ohio is an up-and-coming team in probably the country's best mid-major conference over the past 3 years overall, having very narrowly missed an at-large bid 2 seasons ago — they were one of the "first four out" — and last year upsetting Ohio State in Columbus. Cece Hooks and Erica Johnson, in particular, are solid, seasoned players.

Even with a fully healthy Notre Dame team, this would not have been a gimme, opening up on the road against a team with something to prove. Vaughn, Brunelle and Gilbert would've surely been starters, and so I would refrain from drawing any conclusions from this result regarding ND's prospects for the season. (Edit to add: Credit to whom it's due: the departed McGraw, like Walz, is to be commended for being willing to schedule true road games against tough mid-major teams, a rarity among the elite programs.)

RPI #8 overall 2018 and 2019 (#1 among mid-majors), took a slight dip last year to #10 (behind Ivy and Missouri Valley). Highly doubt they'll be #6 this year.

Maryland with a scrappy but none-too-pretty win over Davidson, 94-72, after leading by only 3 at halftime. I caught pieces of the second half; like many teams at this stage, Maryland looked disjointed and struggled a lot with foul trouble.

Angel Reese with a very solid debut: 20 points on 7-10 shooting, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, foul trouble. What a talent she is. Diamond Miller added another cool 20. Maryland shot horribly from the arc (2-16) but compensated with 17 offensive boards and 10 steals. Benzan, Bibby, Owusu, Collins, Masonius and Lewis all chipped in here and there.

Davidson's Chloe Welch was on fire for stretches, finished with 23 points. If Davidson can play at the level I saw in this game, then they should move up the A-10 standings quite a bit.

They got called for 26 fouls after Arkansas got called for 24 fouls the game before. Something in the officiating down in Florida. Reese is a stud. Diamond was good. Bibby shot poorly but had 9 rebounds.

FGCU typically lives by the 3 and today so far they are 1-23

Kierstan Bell is apparently still awaiting a decision on her waiver.

Transfers Andrea Cecil (Bowling Green) and Aaliyah Stanley (E. Michigan) are playing but have not been major factors, obviously. Total rebuild job for coach Smesko this season. Pretty outrageous that the NCAA has failed to render a waiver decision on Bell in time for this game.

Arizona St. beat VCU 49-40. Points are gonna be hard to come by for the Devils, but the defense is still there.

UCLA is cruising in their opener against Fullerton St. Is that the team they were supposed to play on Wednesday that got delayed?
