Week 1!!! 11/3-11/9

I would not be surprised if Juju isn’t there next year. She should be old enough for the WNBA and you also have the Saudi League starting up.
She won't be old enough for the WNBA next year. In order for an underclassmen to be eligible, they have to turn 22 anytime during the year the draft is held.

Arkansas in real danger of losing to Central Arkansas. Gotta watch out for those Sugar Bears!

Washington avenged a terrible loss from last season to Montana. Cruised from beginning to end. No Ladine again.

When will I learn? Arkansas forces OT. I think it was a 6 point game w/ around 2 minutes left.

Tried to watch the Pac-12 Judas team that bought Judases from Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Utah, and Washington State (think about that for a moment) take on the team that bought an 18 year old for $1 Miiiiiillion dollars, and I couldn't do it.

Maybe I'm just bitter, but the pay to play has really killed my interest in WCBB. Sigh.

So 1 million dollars buys you a 1-12 shooting performance? After 5-18 in the previous game. What was the hype about? I know it's only her second game, but usually Fr. that are really, really good hit the ground running.

Don't try to make it make sense. It doesn't. On an open, regulated and functional free market, no one would pay that because it's not worth it. A'ja isn't getting paid that to play ball and she's the GOAT. It's actually painful even to think about that...

Hogs won by 12 in OT. Messy game, and Arkansas doesn't have tons of talent, but Coach Musick has them scrapping. At least so far.

She was 4-16 last night. It's not much better, however it definitely wasn't 1-12.

It is an open and functional (disfunctional?) free market. As for regulated? Not so much.

Chavez and her “handlers” took a shot at seeing what the market for top WBB recruits would bear by initiating a bidding war. Surely, she will not be the last to do so.

As for whether or not she’s worth a million $, time will tell, although the initial ROI is questionable.

Let’s not forget that the House settlement put a cap on a school’s NIL direct pay of 20.5 million per year. Most SEC schools intend to allocate 5 percent of that cap to women’s basketball. Football will grab the biggest share at most, if not all, P-5s - followed by mbb. Most SEC schools intend to allocate 5 percent of the 20.5 million for wbb. That’s a hair less than 1 million bucks for a whole roster per year! For a school like SCar with a 10 player roster (plus Chloe?) that’s a bit less than 100,000 per year on average .

Of course, individual prospects can make their own deals with 3rd parties and schools can help them find those 3rd parties. That can be hard to estimate in a bidding war for prospects. You can promise the 1 million but not the 3rd party income,

Huge win for UCLA last night. Great to watch the battle between Betts & Beers. Chavez is going to be fun to watch this season and into the future for Oklahoma.

.-.
I am not sure about either Beers or Betts in the pros. And last night did nothing to change my mind. I think the league is moving more towards the mobile stretch centers; like dorka juhasz. I thought Britney Griner even struggled to look like she fit in the league last year.

Not a great game for either Betts or Beers last night, although I must say it looked like the refs were allowing a lot of physical play to transpire, which partially explains the low shooting percentages by both teams. Kneepkens was very impressive, as was Dugalic. The physical play didn't faze either one of them at all.

As a UConn fan, my biggest take away was that UCLA didn't simply focus their offense through Betts like they did all of last year, including into the NCAA tournament. They actually moved the ball around quite a bit and, perhaps realizing that with Beers' attention on Betts, their offense opened up considerably. That bodes well for the Bruins down the road.

At this point in the season, I think UCLA is the #2 team in the country.

Kudos to Cori for scheduling an aggressive OOC schedule. If the Bruins can get through a tough November, I believe they will have a very good chance of running the table through the Big Ten. I wouldn't be surprised if WCBB sees a rewrite of 2014, when two undefeated teams (UConn and Notre Dame) squared off in the National Championship game.

It just seems like there will be a number of ways for creative alums with deep pockets to circumvent any proposed rules.

Cori Close has said in print that she's been having difficulty scheduling non-conference schools (as predicted by Dawn Staley a couple of years ago). At two separate fan events in the past month, she reiterated this and made allusions to having to "get creative". UCLA is playing six games at neutral sites in the first month of this season, compared to a more usual two to three games. I can only assume that opposing teams were benefitting financially in some way from these "showcase' games.

So, I'm not sure if she is being "aggressive" or just taking what she can get. But, UCLA generally plays at least two major opponents outside of early tournaments in November and December, so I don't think that she is particularly avoidant of competition.

If I'm going to get REALLY cynical, it doesn't hurt your portal recruiting when you play teams with great players and are relentlessly pleasant, complimentary, and not unhinged before, during, and after games. Looking at the state of UCLA's projected roster in 26-27, that's definitely a consideration.

.-.
It was at the time I typed it. The game wasn't over at that point.
Chavez didn't start scoring until garbage time, essentially. She's definitely starting out her career behind the 8-ball. Hopefully, she can start listening to her coaches and stop listening to her leeches.
