We should play faster

We play a slow pace because of the offensive sets we run. We literally make teams defend 6-8 screens of more and multiple actions in a 25 second period and it generally results in a high quality shot. Then we do that 60 more times. It wears teams down. Could we score more if we played a quicker tempo? Sure. Would our KenPom #’s be higher? Yes. At the end of the day we have a recipe that works. It’s not at all like watching Virginia win a national championship scoring 50 points/game. Much more pleasing on the eyes.

We have too many explosive scorers to be initiating our offense so slowly and putting up 70
Our team needs to speed up- our motor hasn’t gone 40 minutes all year
Two things here - the first is the same as your other request that we should press more. Speeding up the game means more defensive possessions where we are more likely to foul - this team can't afford that, though they have definitely been getting better about fouling.

Second, they haven't been a fast team in a long time - that's not the method. Run offense with cuts and screens and back screens and more cuts to get the best possible shot over 25 or so seconds. This also wears on the defense over the course of the game. It has been working just fine and no reason to change it. Run when you have the opportunity, execute the offense to get the best shot when you can't run.

Fewer bad turnovers and making more open shots is about all I would ask for.

I think part of the deal is we wear down teams mentally and physically with the action we run. We are relentlessly consistent regardless of score. LAte in games we seem to get even more good looks.

Dan agrees with you

He has said this a few times, but I'm never quite sure why. His teams aren't some of the slowest in the country by accident year after year. It's because he asks them to run a deliberate offense with multiples actions.

I guess no one says "okay play slow guys." And the difference between a "fast" Hurley team and not is like being the 250th vs the 300th fastest team.

I guess it depends what you mean by playing faster. I do think at times they need to look for early offense when the opportunity presents itself. I also think they need to execute their fast break a little bit better. I don't think they should try a bunch of any full court pressure unless they're behind and need to generate some turnovers. They file at too much of an alarming rate to do that.

They've been very good at generating good shots even when the shot clock is almost running out. Just a little more early offense would be helpful if an opportunity presents itself such as a clear mismatch where Demary can take a bigger man off the dribble or one of our bigs exploiting a mismatch after a player switch.

We're in transition 16.5% of the time this year, 19.7% of the time in 2024 and 18.6% of the time in 2023. 16.1% last year.

With how many stops we're getting on defense, you'd expect us to be in transition a lot more often than we were last season.

Oh no, you made a comparison to previous teams.

Only if it gets easy baskets by faster. The offensive execution is so good, they are top 5 in offense, why would they rush an offense that gets you shots that are excellent?

I think they could force more turnovers and turn defense into offense more, but they are so good. There is no need to try and force pace imo. Take what is there.

It's about shot quality.

Agree - BUT, depth is often most effective when you tire the other team out, ala 23 team. Depth isn't quite as important when you run long half court sets.

Irony is that one of our highest scoring outputs when we did push ball (PC), we barely played the bench.
