On the flip side, I don't understand how Miller was allowed to turn Freemantle's 5th foul into a congressional investigation. It was his 5th foul Miller, stfu and sit down...that's how they would have treated DH.
A nearly 75% winning record over 12 seasons as a P5 head coach giveth, and recruiting irregularities taketh away.

So far, 0 Final Fours telleth.
That's HIS growing edge.

Don’t buy it. That was a smart move in Miller’s part. Buy time, calm his team, down ruin UCONN’s momentum, take the crowd out, all with out using a timeout. Great move
If you recall, the scorer was explaining something to the referee, then the refs had a discussion. Miller said that's why he put Fremantle back in the game.

I know I saw, but I don’t believe Miller actually believed that. I think he intentionally caused confusion to stall

1000% that is what he did. Play dumb to drag out the moment. Ask a question because you “recall it was their other big who had that one foul…we better check that one out.”

They played like they had nothing to lose, because losing any of the OOC games wouldn’t let Hurley down on his dream of winning the Big East regular season title.

As soon as they entered the conference started they playing like they were terrified of losing because they didn’t want to let down their coach.
Yet sadly, also per the coach, “we aren’t built for the big east” which is probably his second most perplexing/eye-opening quote of the season

I'm amused that in the house Jim Calhoun built, people complain about Hurley being emotional and working the refs.

I don't get it. What good college coach doesn't work the refs? Seriously?

Dan be Dan, you have to be you to succeed in life. Can't pretend to be someone else.

Calhoun was respected by refs and I think that makes the scenario much difference.

I did stats for PC in the early 90s, and sat on the end of the table next to the opposing coach. Calhoun would constantly swear during the game (like most coaches), but didn't make it personal. He might say "you made a lousy call", but I never heard him say something like "you're a clown."

Now we're playing semantics. Calhoun was despised by the officials. I saw games when all they did was watch him just to T him up, totally ignoring the game. He had ill advised T's. There were fans that used to say "he's ruining some kid's confidence"

Calhoun may have been the biggest bully ever, and I loved every minute of it. I wouldn't change a thing.

There were people that argued "we plateaued under Calhoun", because "he couldn't win the big one". Spare me the poppycock, them there TV dinner experts were wrong about competing in the Big East, they were wrong about Calhoun not being able to win the big one, they were wrong about wanting to change Calhoun, and now they're wrong about Hurley

Time will do it's thing, and haters never grow up

You’ve got quite the revisionism going here. Whoever muttered “we plateaued under Calhoun?”

Paraphrasing

What does "he can't win the big one" mean? In the 90's plenty of "fans" were saying just that

And it was true at that point in his career. Just as it’s true at this point in Hurley’s career.

So you like 40-15 free throw deficits? Isn’t it a coincidence that after Hurley tuned down the antics the free throw discrepancies evened up dramatically??

You know I respect the heck out of you willie so don’t take this personally. No one hates Dan or at least I don’t think they do. But he’s not JC and part of what you say is true JC was more of a bully and although some of the refs despised him, they fully respected him and even showed signs of being a bit intimidated. Dans more of a whiner type not being direct but instead throwing out little snippets of adjectives which piss them off. He needs to just coach more than he shimmed period. Spends too much time talking out of the side of his mouth to the closest striped shirt guy. Time to just coach and not continue to have those refs find more reason to call a 50/50 the other way.

He's not calm on the sidelines. He is still animated, still a big cheerleader. He's just toned down the childish behavior with the refs. That is a good thing IMO.
My wife was a cheerleader. She assured me that you cannot think and cheer at the same time. Cheering has its place but it is secondary to thinking and acting on those thoughts. He's being paid to think and execute.

Of course he did. There were at least 2 scoreboards with large-font displays on the Gampel walls showing Freemantle had 4 fouls. They displayed that for a number of minutes after he got that 4th foul. Someone from the Xavier bench had to see it.

Yet nothing was said to the scorer or the refs until the 5th foul.

Kudos to Miller for trying it. I guess playing dumb resonated with the Zebra crew

One thing we totally agree on, he's not Jim Calhoun

There can only be one GOAT

I too respect everything you said, I agree Dan can make improvements, we all can, and I'm not one that's offended by different opinions :)

I don't think it's true then or now, I just believe there are a lot of good teams and a lot of good players and a lot of good coaches all trying to win. It ain't easy, the GOAT lost plenty of games. Sometimes it takes some luck too

Having said that, experience is the greatest teacher, so yes coaches can get better too
