. . . to describe certain frequent and frustrating situations.

A favorite book of mine ("Word Fugitives") does just that. People create and submit a newly created word for situations for which dictionaries and thesauruses are inadequate. Samples:
  • A word for those days when absolutely everything goes wrong (keys locked in car, debit card sliced, etc.): Try bad err day, karmaclysm or karmageddon.
  • Sometimes a solution makes a problem worse (e.g., football helmets were designed to prevent injuries but now they cause severe injuries): Consider wrecktification, dissolution or fixasco.
  • When someone begins to doze while seated and their head slowly droops downward, only to be occasionally jerked convulsively back up again: Call that a catsnap.
I challenge Boneyarders (you, too, lurkers!) to create new words for the following situations that we know all too well:
  • The tendency for good teams (like, but not limited to, UConn) to play down to teams with level of a distinctly lower level of ability (e.g., UConn vs. Charleston, Tennessee vs. Auburn).
  • Failure of good players to make what appear to be easy layups.
'Yarders, you have been challenged. Let's see how creative you can be. Good luck.

For the second scenario, what about bunniphobia or bunny flop?

Swintology.....the art of making baskets for the other team

Mulkability...the ability to make Mr. Blackwell cringe

Hatchelism...the ability to make even Mulkists cringe

As I wrote, I thought of expressions, not words (which is acceptable).
  • Missing layups? The bucket stops here.
  • Playing down to weak competion? Mediocrity loves parity. Or something about a dull parity.
Not winners, to be sure, but I felt obliged to dip an oar into the water.

These used to be called "snigglets."

My 2 faves:
- "Buckstasy" -- The elation from finding forgotten money in a coat/pants pocket.
- "Schwee" -- Sound the door makes on Star Trek

If you miss layups, it's your best chance to be praised for doing the things that don't show up in the stat sheet.

If you play down to the competition, you can make new friends and influence coach to help you expand your vocabulary.

Voitlock – When the basketball gets lodged between the rim and the backboard.

Gription - The sound of sneakers squeaking against the floor during basketball games.

Begathon - A multi-day event on public television, used to raise money so you won't have to watch commercials.

I was gonna post brickbunny, but, I concede superiority to "Lay-oop!"
too insensitive for general use, but "play down syndrome" is fairly accurate, at least.

  • Blunderwhelm (if you win)
Of course, for a phrase you have "choke on a cupcake".
  • Failure of good players to make what appear to be easy layups.
  • Lay-yip (the miss)
  • Lay-yipitis (the syndrome)
  • Putzback
  • Putbonk
