We lost a Rock & Roll Great, Rick Derringer

If you haven't seen it, the video they made for this song takes place on what looks to be a back lot in Hollywood. The band is up on a platform stage with a, uhm, young lady dancing around. It's worth a peek on youtube.
I have seen it (although it's been a few years).

As a teenager he first hit the charts with 'Hang on Sloopy'. He was lead singer and guitarist for the McCoys. Went by his real name (Zehringer) then.

May he rest in peace.
I've heard many cover bands play that song and until I heard about his passing I never realized that was his song. How I didn't know that before, I don't know.

Interestingly, I've never heard a cover band play Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo. I was told by one band, they need to have both a rhythm and a lead guitar for that song. Maybe it's just not popular enough, or it's just a tough song to play. I requested it a few times but then stopped asking.

Interesting comment. I was fortunate to see a band at happy hour at the Sandbar in Cocoa Beach this afternoon called Joules Rio. They have 2 guitars. I was getting ready to request some Derringer but then they launched into Rock and Roll after mentioning that Rick was some people's heroes. Great experience for me and they covered it very well.

I saw him at the Shaboo multiple times in late 70s and early 80s. He was a little guy who I believe was 5’5” or so. He used to play many benefits in Colchester and other towns in CT. I believe he had close friends in Colchester.

I’m a big Steely Dan fan so I remember “Show Biz Kids” and other tunes.

He also played with Johnny and Edgar Winter.

The last time I saw him was benefit concert with Lefty Foster from Shaboo around 2011 at Jillson Park in Willimantic. Marshall Tucker was there as well along with a young guitarist at the time named Desiree Bassett. She could really shred.

RIP Rick.
