This is Columbia's first title of any sorts in basketball. Riley Weiss, the Ivy League Regular season MVP, was named the Most Outstanding Player after dropping 20 points in the championship. Weiss is a 5'10" guard from Long Island who found her way to the Upper West Side in Manhattan. She's the type of player who buys into the school's culture and gets better on the court. Tip of the hat to Columbia Coach, Megan Griffiths, for helping to get her to this state and for making Columbia a regular contender in the Ivy League.
All power to the Lions. To Win the title, they beat -- in order -- St. Johns, N. Dakota State, California, Wisconsin and BYU.
Note the Lions beat a team that gave ND trouble in California and went on the road to beat Wisconsin and BYU.
Now that Griffith has gotten Columbia to the finals twice in the last few years, perhaps Columbia can find a bigger court to play on in NYC so they can play at home (doubt it, but you never know).
Here's a pretty good analysis on the game. It's written from a BYU perspective, but gives insight into what Columbia did.
