WBB in Arizona

Ok ...the attendance tonight is really driven by frosh PG Benally.....looks like the res really showed up. Benally was key to the Coug victory in Utah
 
Gut wrenching loss 66-61. Announced attendance 6,700 and ASU broke their single season attendance record in large part due to the huge turnout to support the Benally from the rez.

I sat next to a family that drove over from Albuquerque.

After the senior ceremony as I was leaving there must have been four or five hundred people waiting in front of the BYU bus picture on Benally and the Cougs. Inspiring

NAU

First round game up in Boise against Montana. The Lumberjacks split with Montana so I'm guessing 50/50 shot in this game but the Jacks have really struggled over their last three games.

GCU

Hapless Utah State on the 7th. Barring a catastrophe the Lopes move on and we'll play the Rams.

Mesa CC and Pima CC

Both qualified for the national tournament. Pima defeated Mesa Community College in the western qualifier so Mesa got the at large.
 
For as good a story as the ASU Sun Devils are (and it is a GREAT story), they really should not be in the discussion for an NCAAT bid considering how pathetic their OOC was and how weak the Big 12 really is. That said virtually all the mid-majors non-auto bid teams are just absolutely brutal this year which opens the door for the lame OOC schools like ASU, Texas Tech, Georgia and MSU to claim a case. TT and Georgia will be in the field but I shudder to reward a coach for "padding" her wins by playing really bad schools.

Molly tried to schedule Geno, Dawn, Kim, Vic and Shea but they never returned her calls ...lol

Obviously when the NCAA made the decision to expand the size of the tournament the level of quality was going to be very inconsistent not only AQ from smaller conferences but the tertiary teams from the power 4.

I view this time of year before the dance has one of Hope and anticipation. I guess I just identify with Cubs fans post WW2.

The final two weekends should include the regular suspects but getting there is a chance for fun. As a Devil fan I'm glad (and grateful to Molly Miller) to have this opportunity.

With NIL and transfer the focus will increasingly be on the top 16 schools at the expense of the excitement, anticipation and authentic discussion prior to the big dance.

The WCC final here at the Orleans is exemplary of the .... Fun for lack of a better word. This is a good story. And Ally Turner punctuates the fun with a jumper to give the Zags a 2 point lead in the 3rd.

Reflecting on your choice of adjective I did think of a Big East.

In the abstract I agree, but part of the problem is almost everyone - UConn is always a notable exception - does a lot of stat padding out of conference. However, just winning games will not get you into the dance, which after all is largely driven by what can loosely be called analytics. While I might agree, as I said, in the abstract, in the very real world they are deserving of being a bubble team. And Charlie has them as a play-in, for an 11 seed, hardly a huge reward. And we were reminded today by Creme that every bubble team has to beware - they are by no means sitting pretty.

Yep.... I listen to that SportsCenter segment with trepidation. He has the Devils playing Virginia in the College Park regional...oy.... But at least it's part of the dance of the bulls up.

I'm still pretty hard BYU gets to dance.

As we know the real tournament doesn't begin until the second of the second weekend games...sweet 16. Everything that proceeds that is a celebration of women's basketball and an opportunity for the NCAA to make some cash

Jeremy Cluff writes: "Virginia went 19-11 overall and 11-7 in the ACC this season. It enters the tournament having lost three straight games. Arizona State was 24-10 overall and 9-9 in the Big 12, but it did win two games in the conference tournament. Molly Miller's team had one of the best turnarounds in women's college basketball this season. The turnaround will continue with an upset win in the First Four."

Marley and Gabby both commented at a press conference before shoot around in Iowa City that they were completely prepared and in constant contact with coach Miller. This team has veteran leadership but it's a huge blow. It's my hope that she's able to leave today and be at the game tonight. My flight leaves at 11:00 a.m. and arrives in Des Moines at 4:00 p.m. local time. She also I'm sure has access to charter and private transportation.
