Losing out on Travis Best hurt JC a lot, maybe more than any recruit.KO was B to Travis Best if I recall correctly.

I could be wrong but I thought as I recall, Calhoun got involved with the recruiting of Marcus Camby very late, and Calipari already had him pretty much locked up for UMass. So it was not that big a disappointment for JC.Camby to UMASS

Springs is 13. 45 is Gary Busey.
I agree with not being a failure on the recruiting front but on the scouting in state talent, JC missed on a kid right out of Hartford that should have been pursued a bit more vigorouslyI could be wrong but I thought as I recall, Calhoun got involved with the recruiting of Marcus Camby very late, and Calipari already had him pretty much locked up for UMass. Missed out on Ryan Gomes too.I agree with not being a failure on the recruiting front but on the scouting in state talent, JC missed on a kid right out of Hartford that should have been pursued a bit more vigorously
That's the big one. Would have fit that team like a glove.Billy Curley to BC hurt
Wouldn’t have mattered what JC did with MC since Squid was arriving with a Brinks truck right behind him!I agree with not being a failure on the recruiting front but on the scouting in state talent, JC missed on a kid right out of Hartford that should have been pursued a bit more vigorously
Agree on Curley. Not from Connecticut but pretty local, Randell Jackson was another one that JC recruited pretty hard. That's the big one. Would have fit that team like a glove.
To JC's credit, before he came along UConn, missed out on a ton of in state talent, Rocket Rod Foster, John Pinone, Harold Jensen, Charles Smith, Soup Campbell, Chuck Alexinas (at first), Sly Williams, Michael Adams, Mike Gminski, John Bagley (who I knew btw). With the exception of course of Corny, Mike McKay, and Norman Bailey. IIRC Chris Smith was one of JC's first big in state recruits.Curley Cardwelled JC.
Usually recruits give an indication to the coaching staff they are considering other options. We could not afford himCamby is by far the biggest miss we've ever had. He was the best player in the country, had he teamed up with Ray Allen we would have an extra championship or two and it probably could have been one of the best college basketball teams ever.
And in that same time period, Wes Matthews and John Garris. Here is one of Borges's replies:
The Sunday before he announced, Bob Ryan wrote a column that said if Curley didn't go to BC they should give up basketball. I think that had an effect.www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-xpm-1993-01-16-0000107277-story,amp.html
If you read this article... then you know it’s Bill Curley that hurt the most....
