Was it really?!?!?! WOW!!! There are going to be a LOT of people who hate the Villanova coach after THAT!!!especially for those who bet with a line at 41!

Let’s give that issue a break. I was at the game and yes, it was annoying. But I think that was the only 3 Joens hit against us in 3 games. Nova got trounced by 40 and a kid took a shot at the end. Let that young lady have a little bit of happiness.Even less classy? Leaving most of your starters in the entire game when you are losing by 40 points. What was up with that?
You are right. They really don't play anyone past their top 9 and even their 8 and 9 players didn't play all that much in the game. Seems unwise to me. But they sure didn't look tired so maybe it works for them. That could change by the third weekend of the tournament.Congrats to the Huskies for a dominant win tonight and their run through the tournament!
Although UCONN caught a break in the 1st half tonight with Villanova missing so many open threes, I don't necessarily feel that it will be a major problem if they should face UCLA as I think they've demonstrated the ability to adapt and self correct during a game.
The entire team contributed tonight both in readily quantifiable and more subtle ways, but it seemed particularly encouraging seeing:
- Serah having an effective 2nd half.
- Jana having real impact (sometimes, literally) with her 4 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in just 13 minutes (I disagree with the poster who felt that she was a real defensive downgrade from Serah).
- I loved that UCONN'S 6th thru 12th players dominated Villanova's mostly first string players in the 4th quarter 19 to 9 (really 19 to 6 until Villanova hit a last second 3 pointer after UCONN dribbled out a possession to bring the clock down to 5 seconds - and probably presumed that Villanova would do likewise).
- I was delighted with the 4th quarter minutes when Serah and Jana shared the court.
- I was a little concerned with the sloppiness in the 2nd quarter (6 TO's), but amazed that, when all was said and done, UCONN won the quarter 26 to 12.
- I was thrilled but UCONN'S efforts on the offensive boards, gathering 13 (off 31 UCONN misses) as opposed to Villanova grabbing 12 (off of 48 of their misses).
Finally, for all those fans and evaluators who were properly impressed by UCLA's demolishment of Iowa yesterday, I would encourage them to factor in how little UCONN'S big guns played tonight (Sarah 22 minutes, KK 19, Azzi 27, Blanca 18, with no one else playing more than 19 minutes) against a really good team who might actually be able to beat (or, at least, play a tight game against) Iowa, as opposed to how many minutes UCLA's prime players were on the court in yesterday's game.
I was just thinking that Dillon would have wanted to give her bench players who work hard all year an opportunity to get a little playing time in a tournament game with the outcome a foregone conclusion. Villanova won’t have that opportunity in the NCAA.Let’s give that issue a break. I was at the game and yes, it was annoying. But I think that was the only 3 Joens hit against us in 3 games. Nova got trounced by 40 and a kid took a shot at the end. Let that young lady have a little bit of happiness.
Which grates, as her name is Bascoe! Even Bob Joyce got it wrong...All we heard was Boscoe, Boscoe, Boscoe....
Practice for the ncaa tournament?Even less classy? Leaving most of your starters in the entire game when you are losing by 40 points. What was up with that?
I thought they always put the BE teams in the same region. They better hope they don't see us in the tournament. Of course, they won't because the NCAA won't put them in our bracket. But Geno will remember this.
I was puzzled at first, but then it kind of struck me. Nova was really on top of the players looking to pop out for three's. Ash had someone draped all over her all game, as did Azzi and Allie. Even with screens or sprints through the lane, they were giving us nothing, it was hard to get shooters open. It seemed like the only way we scored (and we scored a lot, don't get me wrong) was by devolving into one-on-one drives to the basket. We have the players to pull that off, but it wasn't our normal brand of beautiful basketball with lots of movement and quick passing. So hats off to Nova for cutting out part of our game, and hats off to us for having the players who can score in multiple ways. And yeah, our defense was a little unusual at times with Ash put into the lane as though she were a true old school center. Nova had the rotation to find someone open outside.Very very puzzled with Geno's halftime comment along with other posters - so I figure I'm missing something. What I'm puzzled about is that he seemed to fret over Villanova's getting so many open 3's. Well, what's the expectation when you trap other players? When they don’t turn the ball over, and they aren’t a team to work to look to work the ball in the paint, their 3pt shooters are going to get open looks. If you trap a player, you are leaving someone open. Secondly, the pace UCONN plays at and with them taking a lot of outside shots, the other team is going to have more opportunities from long rebounds to push the ball at UCONN in order to get their own open shots.
The Huskies are trying to win the National Championship. Geno needed/wanted something from his players and needed to play people as long as he did. I figure after 40 years, he knows what he needs. And Azzi played 27 minutes, Sarah 22Even less classy? Leaving most of your starters in the entire game when you are losing by 40 points. What was up with that?
3 cheers for our Huskies!
Everyone contributed without any drop off in intensity
A special shout out to Blanca’s parents who looked so thrilled to see their daughter play. May be my new favorite Husky Mom and Dad.
KK is 2nd in the nation in A/TO. You don’t achieve that level of excellence if you are not consistent. We need to see this (stellar) version of KK the rest of the season and far more consistently next year.
I agree. She sounded as if Villanova lost by 2 at the buzzer after being victimized all game by bad foul calls. Uncharacteristically ungracious.Dillon was hardly effusive in her praise of UConn in her presser. Understandable after a drubbing. But doesn't she realize that Geno didn't want to embarrass her team further. No press in the second half, KK played 19 minutes, Sarah 22,
Leave our big guns in we win by 70.
Scoring wasn’t needed, to say the least. Having said that she was everywhere doing the dirty work.Quiet tournament for Shade. That’s okay. More opportunities in the big tournament.
I’m sorry, but Denise Dillon is a class act. I listened to Dillon’s postgame and I really don’t believe she was ungracious or sounded like her team lost by 2. What I do believe is that after playing UConn so well in Philadelphia recently, she was really bummed that her team was beaten so badly last night. Other than that, she said all the right things about UConn as well as her team.I agree. She sounded as if Villanova lost by 2 at the buzzer after being victimized all game by bad foul calls. My comment was regarding the Villanova coach leaving her starters in for the entire game. I have no issue with Geno’s decisions on UConn playing time nor have I ever commented on it.The Huskies are trying to win the National Championship. Geno needed/wanted something from his players and needed to play people as long as he did. I figure after 40 years, he knows what he needs. And Azzi played 27 minutes, Sarah 22
I have no issue with the late three. The kid was probably excited to get an open look
Nobody said she wasn't a class act, which she is. Geno heaped tons of praise on her and her team. Her entire comment on UConn , was "Congratulations on winning the BE Tournament". Compare that to Jim Flannery's comments the night before.I’m sorry, but Denise Dillon is a class act. “Nobody said she wasn’t a class act?” I was responding to a post that referred to Dillon as “uncharacteristically ungracious.” That doesn’t sound very “classy” to me. There was another post by a BY’er that suggested she complained about the refs which was also untrue.Nobody said she wasn't a class act, which she is. Geno heaped tons of praise on her and her team. She obviously doesn't feel her team gets the respect it deserves, and I think that's the chip on her shoulder we observe.
It was Bascoe who said the play was chippy and they played thru it. Dillon was disappointed and justifiably so. Their 3 point shooting was 19%. And they rely on the 3. They missed shots but UConn's defense had something to do with that.“Nobody said she wasn’t a class act?” I was responding to a post that referred to Dillon as “uncharacteristically ungracious.” That doesn’t sound very “classy” to me. I believe her scoring is going to be needed from here on out. When she scores against the better teams it seems to spark the rest of the UConn players.Scoring wasn’t needed, to say the least. Having said that she was everywhere doing the dirty work.
There is a reason she starts.
The announcers said Villanova missed a great number of threes in the game they won before playing UConn. It seems they have a lot of work to do.I agree wirh @oldude. Coach Dillon certainly is a class act. And she clearly knows her team gets respect from the big east and beyond. Both her and Geno referenced the wide open threes her team missed during the game, especially in the first half.
At the end of the press conference, she was asked what her team was going to work on before the big tourney, and she said they were going to work on shooting skills, and after that's done, they were going to work on their shooting skills. Missing all those threes is what she was frustrated about.
You think she has been playing at her current level all season?KK is 2nd in the nation in A/TO. You don’t achieve that level of excellence if you are not consistent.
