Villanova Post Game Thread

We need to play faster, push the ball when we have opportunities. Conference opponents have been making us start our offense so high and away from the 3pt line, pushing the ball up the floor and attacking a bit earlier when opportunity present itself will help open up the actual offense.

Best part of the game:

Solo is back!

Worst part of the game:

The refs were horrendous.

Two of the fouls called on Reed should have been on Brennan. There were two additional fouls on Brennan (including a moving screen on the three very late in regulation) that were not called.

We got the W and showed a tremendous amount of fortitude. Hope Mullins doesn't miss any time.
The two fouls on Reed were legit. The push in the back was slight but it was obvious and on the rebound Reed was holding Brennans arm down. Thought the refs were largely fine.

We grind on d, but we don't create a lot of offense off defense, a BIG difference from the 24 team. We just don't do anything on that end of the floor to transition, blocks, steals, etc. And in general, we aren't a great looking transition team - one break today with Stew looked like the Elaine dance. This just is not a graceful team offensively, at all. Even Tarris, while he has light feet for his size, it's not as though he's Tim Duncan down there. It's a really clunky team on offense. Braylon looks great when he's out there, but it seems teams are really trying to take him away.

We also don't make a lot of extra passes, skip passes on offense. Tarris has no idea how to pass out of the post.

Maybe Hurley gets this part about this group and it's why he has focused on defense. Who knows.

We are simply not a "kill shot" team as we don't do anything to create easy points. We don't crash the offensive boards either, not a very good rebounding team.

The one thing that always looks beautiful is Solo's threes. I'm not sure there is a prettier looking jumper out there.

Completely agree. Sometimes Reed doesn't make "smart" looking plays. Not sure if it's from being tired or lazy or just sloppy decisions, but those were two of them for sure.

For those like me today I could not watch the game. I will be driving home and will celebrate what all of you went through pulling your hair out knowing that we won when I get home. Not that I like that but it's better than not watching and reading our beloved Boneyarder posts. I'm hearing Braylon is injured, not what we need right now.f#%k

The refs were fine at best on those calls, they're weak fouls but if you want to justify those calls I don't have an issue with it. The issue is they ignored 3-4 very clear fouls on Brennan before those plays, all of which would have removed him for the rest of the game. That's why people justifiably think the refs had a rough game

The main thing that bothered me was having 2 very different standards for blocks and charges on either end AND calling touch fouls on Demary while allowing wholesale grabbing

I don't know. To be fair, this conference must be a nightmare for refs. Imagine being the ref for our games with PC, Seton Hall, Georgetown and then this game? I also recently watched Butler/Marquette, St Johns/PC which were the same.

If they call it too tight? It's a 3 hour game. If they let them play, there's a handful of plays either team can whine about them missing.

All jokes aside, our rebounding is going to be a problem, and our FT shooting is a close 2nd.

We are an excellent team that's battle tested and has multiple great options. But we need to board better consistently and we can't have guys missing both in a crunch time situation. This isn't a 1 game sample of these things.

BUT, Solo is a dawg, always has been. Braylon, get better. AK is always clutch. Demary made a couple of the plays of the game. He's got a clutch gene for sure.

Hurley went off on the rebounding in his presser. He called out the lack of rebounding from the perimeter players and Tarris’ poor defensive rebounding effort.

How? By holding? So that offense had a lifespan, or we just don't have the right guys to run it?

One thing that's been said already is we have zero rim runners on this team for the easy dunks, Tarris just doesn't play above the rim at

That’s not what I was implying (lifespan), the offensive sets are still elite and complex. Other teams have found ways to slow down our offense by constantly switching on d off picks and playing super tight where our guys sometimes don’t have room to turn and face the basket after catching passes. Also, teams have been aggressively denying the first few passes that help get those sets flowing. Sometimes you have to tip your cap to opposing teams who defend well. The good thing we all know is our offense is designed to wear down opposing teams over the course of 40 minutes.

Are teams holding our guys running around screens? Absolutely. In fact, seton hall was holding our guys coming off the bus! That game was egregious.

We have an excellent PG in Silas and he’s still learning how to balance running the team and knowing when he should go get his on offense. We’ve seen him start to go off script and go downhill at the top of the key to either get a layup or an easy assist to a teammate. Not sure what’s going on w/ Mali, but hope he’s able to turn it around soon. Solo and Mullins also have the ability to go get a basket when needed and are the other solutions on offense. Just missed too many easy ones today.

This team has the ability to win it all and still is developing, which is scary for future opponents. We are absolutely blessed to have them and should expect them to do some damage come March (and April!)

I think I watched a different game than most other people here. We don’t miss a half dozen point blank layups and a half dozen uncontested threes, this is a cruise.

And since we’ve seen (with our own eyes) these same players shoot well before, the only question is what they need to do to stop having these shooting doldrums.

We say this every game.

The problem is we miss all those layups every game now and our three point shooting has been a lot worse than today's three point shooting.

We're just playing bad offensive basketball lately for whatever reasons.
