Villanova Fires Kyle Neptune

Norlander confirmed. Thank god... best thkng to happen to Nova ball since Jay left.

The whole waiting to retire so your hand-picked former-player replacement gets the job is such a stupid move every time. Cocky HOF coaches always think they know best and don't... Calhoun included.

So Calhoun is responsible for what Ollie did years later? Hey at least we can say we won a title with a failed coach.

.-.
If he's suggesting that either Kimani or Luke would become the next Villanova head coach I would have mixed feelings about it. I'd hate to lose either one, but that would be a great first head coaching job for either of them.
Chris Collins to Nova, NW opens up for Kimani or Luke. Does NW have NIL?

I gave him half credit for the national championship, the down years are all on KO though. If you catch Coach Calhoun in a good mood, sometimes he'll say that he has "three, well really four", national championships. He's only half joking about that.

Calhoun is responsible for essentially forcing the university to hire a wholly unqualified person who had 0 head coaching experience, resulting in a near death knell for the program. Yes.

It took a coach as transcendent as Hurley, what, 3 or 4 years to get us back in the top-25? That's how badly KO screwed this program top to bottom.

Got it. That actually makes more sense. No idea regarding. NW's NIL situation.

Calhoun wasn't perfect but he earned that right and set up Ollie with a staff, Blaney stayed on in the tourney ban year. It's easy to be a genius in hindsight. Would you have trusted Jeff Hathaway to hire the next coach?

They're in the B10, in Chicago, and have an elite alumni pool. If they don't have NIL now, they should be able to get it.

Yeah, if hiring Ollie got us a few more years of part-time Calhoun and another national championship, it was worth it. Doubt things could have gone better for UConn than the way they actually did, except perhaps winning the arbitration case and saving $10 million.

I would want exactly 0 single person tobe trusted to hire a head coach. I would never hire a coach to do it especially. Too many blind spots.

Hiring for ANY important job should be a team effort with many stakeholders involved.

At the hire, many of us were thrilled, and that feeling lasted until early 2015. Right about when his marriage fell apart. 2014 was one of my 6 favorite years.

I would say Calhoun was in a far better position to make that call then you were the 2013 and 2014 results speak for itself. I know this is a hard concept for some people to get but Ollie falling off is on Ollie.

It already happened we won a national championship with him and the timing of his firing resulted in Hurley.

Your posts on this topic have gotten more ridiculous over time.

UConn was in a hellhole of a conference. If UConn had joined the Big East when it split, Ollie would have kept UConn very competitive.

Looking back and saying "well we won a natty so Calhoun was right" isn't going to help your case. We could play what if's all day. Maybe we hire Shaka and win 3 nattys. Maybe we hire some other schlub and never crack the top-100. No one knows.

What we do know is KO was completely unqualified in every way. Plain and simple.

Maybe a year too late but the right decision. This hire is critical to turn the ship around

I think Villanova is a great job and even just a decent coach can be very successful. Neptune really, really sucked as a Head Coach.

I'm not making a case the facts show that Ollie was the right hire, turned a 2 year plan into a national championship, him falling off after that is on him. He was the right hire but didn't turn into THE GUY.

I doubt they go for one of our assistants - NW will likely land some coach in the puritan coaching tree, like Nova would do with Collins. Schools like that care as much about image as winning. Nova fans at MSG all feel like they rolled there from a massage at the country club. If a program wants to win they’d grab guys like Beard, who is a bad@ss but comes with reputational warts.

I can totally see Collins at Nova. Hadn’t thought of it but it makes total sense.

Pete Thames mentioned Richard Pitino, Kevin Willard and Ryan Odom

Baby Pitino in the Big East would be really fun to watch tbh
Yeah it would - just don’t know which school is the right fit. A PC if English flames out could be interesting. Or maybe it’s the StJ succession plan.

I’m not sure Jay picked Neptune
