My father was at Camp Geiger and Cherry Point around the same time. He was an AARF crash crew member driving a crash truck. His tour was in the '51 to '53 time frame. Very fortunate not to be deployed to Korea. A number of guys he went through boot camp with did come back.
My Dad "jumped out of perfectly good airplanes" from 1950-1953. He always said that he felt safer OUTSIDE of the airframe, as he did not trust the planes they were jumping out of back in the day. He has 3 weeks left in the Army when the Korean Conflict went hot, and chose to get out and marry my Mom.

I believe that was the best choice he ever made, and he would say it multiple times while he was alive.

I also had 4 Uncles in the military: one Army, Two Navy and one Air Force. Three enlisted and one who went in enlisted and retired as a Major in the Air Force, and then did his same job description as a civilian for another 20 years before retiring for a second time out in California (near Malibu). My cousin went into the Army straight out of High School and was a Nuclear/Chemical/Biologic tech.

My wife was also Navy AND from Connecticut. Our two nieces were Marines, and one of them graduated with a 4.000 GPA from UConn during the "Four-peat" with Stewie, Morgan, and MoJeff, but she did not play basketball.
