Over a year ago WFAN 660 A.M. began simulcasting on 101.9 F.M. This morning the Daily News' Bob Raissman is reporting that CBS Radio, which owns WFAN, is in an "inter-company squabble" with WFAN management. Corporate CBS wants to move WFAN exclusively to FM & start broadcasting its CBS Radio at 660 A.M. If corporate gets its way, Fatso & the rest of the Fandroids will vanish from the airwaves in Central & Northern Connecticut due to the poor reach of FM broadcasting. Obviously WFAN management is PO'ed about the prospect.

Without Imus and the Mad Dog I stopped listening years ago.

That and ESPN radio coming on line.

Too bad ESPN radio is unlistenable, except for SVP. And holy crap is Foxsports even worse.

I listen to Mike and Mike when there is good sports stuff going on. I like Colin as well (I used to spend time in LA so got him during the morning commute). But the best days of WFAN were much better.

So true (except I think SVP sucks too). That afternoon drive on Fox is almost as bad as John Rowland.

I'll put it this way. For a sports junkie, ESPN is the best out there today. Rarely awesome, but like bacon. I'd rather have bad bacon than no bacon. If it's either that or blabbering political blather...

WEEI has gone through the same change recently, going FM on 93.7 out of Boston with its local shows and simulcasting ESPN Radio on the old 850 AM frequency. One thing WEEI has is a list of other stations all over NE carrying it.

Many people will argue that with the advent of internet streaming and smartphones, no radio signals are out of range.

When WFAN became a bunch of Yankee fans calling in to play GM year round many years ago I got fed up and never went back.

The thing I dislike most about ESPN Radio is it is all force fed. If you do not like the host's point, you cannot engage them. They do not take phone calls and it is the lack of this type of interaction that allows ESPN to spew its one-sided stories (see: Big East bashing) as fact and not be held accountable.

ESPN is too over-the-top corporate to be any fun. They don't go 2 minutes with some kind of commercial drop-in. And the discussion is so canned and vanilla you never get anything with real wit or humor.

This.

But in the fall/winter, they also spend a great deal of time bitching about Eli.

I listen to WEEI, WFAN, WIP, and other sports stations and the majority of it is this. Whining and armchair QB/GM-ing. It gets old after a while. If you are able, I recommend Sirius' sports stations. You won't get the local perspective necessarily, but there is relatively little bias and you get real insight.

I moved to Sirius Radio about 6 or 7 years ago. I supplement that with podcasts. I record then load into my car:

Tony Kornheiser
PTI
Adam Carolla
Dave Dameshek
Bill Simmons
This Week in Tech
Freakonomics
The Game
5 Live Football Daily

Never have to wish there was something worth listening to.

I have that ESPN Radio app and I used to listen to ESPN in the car over in Old Europe.

I really only like listening to Colin Cowherd. He's funny and he is brutal with his opinions. I prefer SVP's sidekick, to SVP.

I like Golic, but Greenie is just incredibly irritating. He likes baseball too much. It's way more fun if Mark Schlereth is filling in.

I wish there was something as good or better than ESPN Radio, because I hate how ESPN controls the narrative across virtually all forms of media.

I have over an hour commute each way but that sounds like too much work.

The biggest problem with ESPN radio is every guest interview is sponsored and promoting something with that guest, so time is spent pimping that. They also seem to be stock piling every retired NFL and NBA player, and can't figure out what to do with them. Especially on radio, if they can't follow a script they quickly start sounding stupid.

That's where I'm at now, but I mix in some music and politics too. The music keeps me sane.

I have sirius so I rarely listen to the WFAN. When I do, it is same old know it all Francesa. Glad I don't listen.

Love NFL radio and MLB radio in sirius. Mad Dog has really gone downhill, I can barely listen to his show. And I used to be a big fan.

Not sure what Raissman is talking about. CBS owns 660 WFAN, 880 CBS and 1010 WINS. That is three of the best known radio spots on the dial. Supposedly 101.9 was purchased only to penetrate into Manhattan because WFAN's AM signal gets blocked by the buildings. Even if WFAN went exclusively FM I'd have to believe that CBS would want to simulcast on local FM stations in CT.

All those podcasts can be downloaded wirelessly via iTunes to your iPhone or in my case, to an android device via Dogcatcher or some other app. If your vehicle is relatively new (2007 or so or newer) you can play the podcast through the headphone jack on the AUX channel of your radio.
