I roomed with a drummer in college for a year. Not that he's the authority on the subject, but he said Keith Moon was the best there ever was. Said he and many others have tried to mimic his solos and can't do it. Behind Blue Eyes was his favorite drum performance (the end when it picks up, of course - not the early ballad part). I listen to the drums every time that song comes on to this day.

I think Bonham was better than Moon, or at least more versatile. Personally prefer David Garibaldi of TOP.

Buddy Rich, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Terry Bozzio, Moon, Bonham, Peart, Jimmy Chamberlain, and many others I cannot think of right now...

I'll just add this because it really is a fantastic piece about Moon.

There's a bunch of great jazz drummers, but out of the guys I consistently listen to, it's Moon, Bonham, Peart and then the rest. I'm partial to Moon (showmanship sets him apart for me), but IMO, if you take him and Bonham and have them trade bands, they wouldn't have been thought of as highly as they are. Both guys perfectly meshed with their respective bands.

Moons work on Tommy and Quadrophenia was remarkably busy but precise. Carried many tunes. Unique. Ringo gets points for variety and subtlety. Come Together was typical. Understood making space for other instruments. After that there's simply too many.

Much as I enjoy Moon - and Quadrophenia is a staple on my trips back and forth to CT - I always recall Entwhistle complaining that the Who didn't really have a rhythm section because Moon played drums like he was lead guitar.

Nothing against the others mentioned here, but I'm partial to guys who make a big sound with interesting fills seem effortless. Bun E. Carlos and Cesar Zuijderwijk come to mind. You watch vids of those guys and it seems they're not breaking a sweat.

Not a Rush fan, but I enjoyed the vids of Peart's Buddy Rich tribute on One O'Clock Jump and Cottontail.

That's interesting because Entwhistle also played a bass that was far from basic rhythm. That band just worked perfectly together and I'm not sure if that would have been the case if you had switched any one person out. A lot of their live stuff is just barely controlled chaos that somehow ends up brilliantly.

Townsend is the rhythm section most of the time as both the Ox and Moon defy traditional style as a bassist and drummer.
