Vandy Takes Down TX

Booker on Galvin was an act of desperation by Vic. She was eating up Harmon, which is why Harmon earned a spot on the bench.
This isnt the first time Vic pulled Harmon and put her on the bench. Is it her defense? Now sure. IMO if you keep the ball out of Galvins hands, play good D on her you can slow Vandy down. Looked like that happened in the second half. Taking Harmon out makes me wonder just how good TX defense is. Vandy seemed to get alot of dribble drives in the first half resulting in their high shooting percentage.

It’s amazing how Vic waffles on Harmon. In Dec. 2025 he claimed “Harmon showed why she’s the best point guard in the country”. Two months later she’s not effective enough to play in certain games.

I had thought that UConn, UCLA, South Carolina and Texas were essentially locks for number one seeds, the only question being the ordering.

Now it looks to me like it is UConn number one, UCLA number two, and the four top SEC teams fighting it out for 3-6. The rest of the SEC season and the SEC post season tournament will be very interesting.

South Carolina at LSU on Saturday and Texas at Tennessee on Sunday will be interesting. How will Texas respond to Vic's tirade?

Blakes is going to beat out SS when Uconn is undefeated?..not happening!!
I think so. Her offensive statistics are just better. And she has the SEC pushing her.

Edit: I just want to warn you guys. Don’t be surprised if UConn is not the number one overall seed when the bracket reveal comes out this weekend.

Which statistics? Blakes scores more ppg than Sarah in large part because she plays significantly more mpg and takes considerably more shots per game. Sarah shoots a better percentage at all three levels, while also leading Blakes in rebounds, blocks, steals, assists, assist/turnover ratio and just about any advanced metric you can think of.

If Sarah was playing for a team that required her to play 35-40 mpg and take 20-30 shots per game, she would be easily putting up 30 ppg. Also, here’s a bit of history. While UConn has had a bunch of NPOY winners, not a single one was ever in the top-10 scoring nationally.

One final point. This is not unlike the discussion regarding Paige and CC then JuJu. In the 2 seasons that Paige was fully healthy, her 1st & last, she earned the WBCA NPOY award voted on by the coaches who know what they’re looking at when they evaluate POY candidates.

Note to all: take a look at Vic’s postgame comments. “We have no heart.” “We weren’t tough enough.” He laments paying “these kids 100’s of thousands of dollars. Suggests he’s going to, “call my AD and apologize.” He does say it’s his fault. But I can only imagine what the Longhorns next practice will be like.

The Horns' next game is against Tennessee. I think the LVs are in trouble.

What a tremendous job Shea Ralph has done at Vanderbilt. She has built herself a solid program and they are improving every year. She's got some really potent weapons this year and a phenomenal, talent in Blakes.
I'm rewatching her post-game presser vs SC. Night and day vs. TN's Caldwell in how she talked about her team and staff after that embarrassing loss, how that was a learning experience for all of them, and how their goals for this season are still achievable. Classy coach. Happy for Shea and her program.

Surprised? I think shocked would be a better word. Surely you jest...

A little over 5000 attendance in an arena that has 14K + capacity. A game of this magnitude would be a sellout in CT, Columbia SC and Iowa City, among a few others.
I was astonished to see the attendance (or lack thereof). This should be an embarrassment to the school. Their sports teams have been an embarrassment to the Athletics world for some time and they seem to all get together at the same time but no one showing up.

I've been critical of the LA teams which don't seem to support decent teams but I never would have guessed that Vanderbilt would be almost as bad.

Didn’t get to watch. Why did Justice Carleton only get 7 minutes? Harmon only 18?

Injuries?
Harmon wasn't up to the task. Texas chipped into the lead mainly at the beginning of the fourth quarter when they scored the first eight points. That occurred with Harmon on the bench which may be a little bit of a coincidence but it doesn't help her resume. I hadn't noticed the Carlton didn't get much playing time until I checked the box score. She's been effective in prior games so I don't know whether she just had an off day, was under the weather or something else.

Only a few days ago, there was quite a bit of speculation about what impact Caldwell’s comments would have on the Lady Vols. The team seems to have responded pretty well against Missouri (though granted they are a team reeling from injuries).

I think it will be interesting to see how Texas responds to Vic’s remarks after the Vandy loss.

I love Mikayla Blakes, but the idea that her offensive numbers are simply better than Sarah Strong’s depends on what you value. Blakes definitely scores more points per game and carries a bigger offensive load for her team. But when you look beyond raw scoring, Strong is much more efficient. She scores more points per shot, shoots a significantly higher percentage overall, and turns the ball over far less often. That means Strong gets more out of each possession and wastes fewer opportunities. She also creates for teammates while keeping her assist-to-turnover numbers strong. Blakes is an elite, high-volume scorer, but the evidence shows that Strong produces offense more efficiently and cleanly. So while Blakes has bigger scoring totals, it’s not accurate to say her overall offensive statistics are just better.

(To put it in a more wonky way: The claim that Mikayla Blakes’s offensive statistics are simply better than Sarah Strong’s does not hold up when you examine advanced efficiency data alongside volume scoring. While Blakes averages more points and carries a significantly higher usage rate (34.7% compared to Strong’s 27.0%), Strong is far more efficient with her opportunities. Strong posts a 134.8 offensive rating, 1.22 points per possession, and an elite 66.1% effective field goal percentage, compared to Blakes’s 122.1 offensive rating, 1.03 points per possession, and 52.5% eFG. In other words, Strong generates more points per scoring attempt (1.39 vs. 1.16) despite taking fewer shots. She also protects the ball better, with a 12.2% turnover rate compared to Blakes’s 27.1%, and maintains a stronger assist-to-turnover ratio (2.31 vs. 1.61), showing superior offensive decision-making. Although Blakes is the higher-volume scorer and draws more free throws, the efficiency gap across multiple advanced metrics demonstrates that Strong produces offense more effectively and with less wasted possession. Therefore, while Blakes may have bigger raw scoring totals, the evidence suggests Strong’s overall offensive performance is statistically stronger.)

It was a broken Missouri team. No post player.

Vandy doesn't have many local fans. They are a private school that has prioritized out of state admissions for a half-century with a sadsack athletic program. They've never tried to claim Nashville, and all of the transplants brought other loyalties with them. Other sports fandoms too.

In football, SEC teams treat it as a fun weekend roadtrip to enjoy the sights and take over the stadium on gameday.

I think undefeated UConn could be the #3 overall seed if South Carolina and UCLA win out

I'd love to hear the rational for that statement

Private School vs 3 State Public Flagships. A campus in the heart of a booming city vs 3 schools in relative backwater. Lots of options for the entertainment dollar for the people in Nashville compared to the three places you listed. Plus the three you mentioned have long established fan bases compared to the upstarts in Nashville. 5,000 for a 630 tipoff on a Thursday night, in traffic snarled Nashville? That's very respectable in my book.
