Hats off to Vandy and Coach Ralph. Playing a Top 10 program and did not give up. Something positive to build on for the rest of the season, especially for the SEC leg of the season.

I've heard Shea mention coach Yow on numerous occasions, especially when she talks about the history and progress of women's basketball. She seems to rank her right up there with coach Summitt in terms of her early influences. Geno, of course, is most important in molding her view of the game. That's three pretty good mentors if you ask me.

IIRC she was always very respectful of Pat too even though she played at the peak of the rivalry. I’ve always been a big Shea fan.

Vandy 9 of 33 from the field, 0-5 from three. Held Butler to four in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs have 18 turnovers. Hard on the eyes doesn't begin to describe it. The scary thing is, what if we're not in the mood to play that kind of defense the second half.
 
Finally beat Butler 51-39. Believe it or not, Vandy actually played quite well in most facets but had an awful night shooting the ball...34 percent from the field...Had 64 shots to 44 for Butler...had 21 offensive rebounds...created 24 turnovers and only turned it over 12. Even with all that, it took a nice fourth-quarter run to put the game away.

For that shooting performance, I offer my sincere apologies to the spirit of Jimmy Chitwood. (If you haven't seen "Hoosiers"and don't know who Jimmy Chitwood is, shame on you)

For the second week in a row, Vandy women are on the "next four out" list on ESPN's bracketology. Yeah, that's barely noteworthy for a lot of programs, but when you haven't been to the tournament in a decade, it's good to hear your name associated with it in any way.

Vandy returns to action today after a 10-day break for exams. This is always a tricky game as the players are usually weary from a tough academic schedule and practice as a team has been minimal. I'm looking on the bright side and hoping they've managed to get into the gym individually to get up a lot of shots. If you've seen the way this team has been shooting the ball, you'll know that is sorely needed.

Game vs. hometown foe Lipscomb starts at 1 p.m. CST on SEC+. Vandy managed to win last year's matchup by one in overtime.
 
This one even got Katie Lou out of her seat. Khamil Pierre, a 6'2 freshman, is really improving. I especially liked this because it was actually the best way to clear the ball and get the shot up cleanly. Also, the bench erupted, but Khamil just turned and went to the other end to play defense.

 
One observation - Shea didn't bring the UConn uniform code with her wrt everyone wearing the same color shoes. ;)

Yep. I was surprised a couple weeks back when Pierre suddenly showed up wearing those gaudy green shoes. I'm old. I prefer teams to dress in a uniform manner. I guess it doesn't bother Shea, though.

Vandy has lost top reserve Madison Greene to a knee injury. The freshman had become a true spark plug off the bench at the guard position and, even though she wasn't starting, she was playing starting minutes of late. After an 18-point performance against Louisiana Tech, she came off the bench midway through the fourth quarter at Butler when the team was having an awful time scoring. She scored eight in a row to stretch a two-point lead to 10 and settle the game. In other words, she was becoming one of the key players on the team. She injured her knee Sunday and will miss the rest of the season. I hate it for the young lady, but, she's tough, and I know she will be back next year.

Well, lookee here. Vanderbilt among the Last Four In for the NCAA tournament? Yeah, it's way early and conference play is going to be a slog for a team that is still quite young, but I'm going to revel in every small victory. Thinking back to where this program was when Shea Ralph arrived three seasons ago, not going to lie, this tiny bit of glory feels...well...glorious.

Plenty of days of reckoning ahead, including a conference opening trip to Mississippi State next week, but today is a Katrina and the Waves Walking on Sunshine type of day. As Katrina herself said: "Don't it feel good?"

Nice win for Vandy. Man heart goes out to Coach Tamika. Dayton was a program that was making some gains into becoming another solid mid-major program. Hopefully Coach Williams-Jeter can get things going back in the right direction.

I have to say I find your posts a bit confusing and in this case-misleading. Shauna Green coached Dayton from 2016-2022 and won the A-10 Title 5 times in 6 years, she left last year for Illinois, so how “exactly“ is Coach Tamika “making gains” into becoming another solid mid-major program when they already were before she arrived? Dayton was 26-6 in 2021-22 and then 7-21 in Tamika’s 1st year so yeah, I hope she turns it around as this demise is happening on her watch So don’t make it sound like she’s tasked with turning the program around When it was downtrodden.

Not trying to derail the thread, but there were only 3 players returning to the roster in Tamika’s first season. And, hold on to your hat, they averaged a whopping collective 1.9p and 1.8r.

Tamika was greeted in Dayton with an empty cupboard.
 
If you're bored this afternoon (I mean really, really bored), Vandy plays Radford at 1 CST on SEC Network. Probably one of those games where the network announcers call it from their home offices, a method they discovered during Covid and now employ from time to time to save money. Still, it will be better than listening to Vandy's WBB announcers, who are beyond irritating. The play-by-play guy dearly loves the sound of his own voice. I don't. The men's announcers are excellent, by the way.

Anyway, after playing only two games in three weeks, coach Ralph scheduled the two lowest-ranked foes (Farleigh-Dickinson and Radford) to get some work in before the start of SEC play. It's not exactly compelling to watch, but I do think it's smart scheduling.

 
Vandy now 13-1 going into SEC play, the program's best record since the 2006-07 season. They won just 12 games all of last year. Coach Ralph now 40-38 as the head coach. Considering the circumstances she inherited and the crazy run of injuries in her second season, that's not bad at all.
