Unfortunately with so many teams in the conference now, there are a lot of players that will be left out. Madison Booker was the only player from Texas that got voted onto 1st or 2nd team. When your team is 9th you’re probably not going to get 2. Blakes was 1st team so…There’s no doubt Pierre is a great player and is vital to their success, IDK who they would take off to put her in.

Where the SEC voters failed to recognize her, national voters haven't. Pierre is a finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award, along with Sarah Strong, Sonia Citron, Madison Booker and Mikayla Williams.
Elite group of players but an odd selection for that particular award IMO. I’d consider Williams to be more of an SG and Strong and Pierre to be more PFs but maybe I’m mistaken.

Honestly, I don't know either. I had made the same comment to a friend with respect to Citron as she's a guard to me. However, players like Bridget Carleton and Ashely Joens have won this award. Maybe this award category offers some flexibility with respect to who is considered for nomination?

Coaches decide what category to enter the player in at beginning of season.

Small forward tends to be the catchall for the most versatile players.

Strong ideally is at 3, but she ended up playing 4,5 all season out of necessity. Imagine a line up with Strong at 3 and a very good 4&5.:D

At LSU Flaujae Johnson is the 2, Morrow is the 4, and Williams at 3. Of course in reality, Williams is actually a better 'shooter' than FJ, and currently plays 1,4 and 5 at some point in every game. Sometimes she switches spots everytime there is a substitution. Williams not as physical at 4,5 as Sarah, but is a remarkable player.

Citron another one. Good enough shooter to be a WNBA 2. Tall enough and willing to play 3,4. Notre Dame even now uses her regularly at 1-4, and she can guard 1-5. I really enjoy her brief appearances now at the point, when Hidalgo/Miles on bench. She goes dribble drive and attacks paint just like her star colleagues!

Vandy, I haven't watched in detail, but the trio of Pierre, Moore and Blakes can make them a threat for anyone.

Nice recognition for Shea. I think it's an indication of the progress she has made in four years that she is being considered for national coach of the year while two of her players, Khamil Pierre and Mikayla Blakes, have made the Naismith final five at their respective positions.

Pretty impressive company she's keeping.

I know some of this stuff becomes repetitive, but for me this thread has become something of an official repository for some of the highlights and points of interest in the program, so when there is a milestone like this, I want to document it. Hopefully, it won't become irritating to others.

I see this as similar to the approach being taken with the Tennessee thread. I'm speaking for myself of course ;)

I appreciate the updates. Vanderbilt is my alma mater…when I was there, they were in the top 20. I’ve tried to watch a few games this year. Really impressed with the job Shea is doing.

Well, I am not sure I completely agree on your optimistic statement as the AP voters just ignored her completely. Khamil has had a great year that warranted AA consideration. The fact the SEC was completely ignorant in their acknowledgement is truly egregious and did affect the national AP voters. Khamil was 7th in the country in Efficiency and 14th in WinShares. The only SEC player who ranked better was Morrow.

I am just saddened by this lack of respect but at least she's a sophomore and has a NCAAT games to show the audience what she can do.

I see where you're coming from, but being a Cheryl Miller finalist is still something. Better than being left out entirely.

I think one reason (not an excuse) for her lack of recognition is that she kind of came out of nowhere this year. Nothing in her first year suggested that she would get any consideration for post season honors. I can't think of anyone offhand that had more of a quantum leap from one year to the next.

There might have been some other surprises, but I think in general terms most postseason award winners were also in the preseason discussion and well known before the first game was played. Someone who comes out of the blue is at a definite disadvantage until they get more major exposure.

Khamil actually started to garner some notoriety in the second half of last season. During the first half, she wasn't even starting, but eventually she just forced her way into the starting lineup and helped carry the team to the NCAA tourney. Announcers and media members often talked about her potential, and Shea's constant assessment was that Khamil had no idea yet how good she was or could be.

Bottom line, though: I can see no reason that a player who averages 20.5 points and 9.7 rebounds and had more double doubles than anyone except Aneesah Morrow should be left off the all-conference team. She broke the program scoring record with 42 points earlier in the season. Mikayla Blakes then shattered the record twice with 53 points and 55 points. At the start of the season, though, Pierre was actually getting more attention than Blakes. Mikayla did overshadow her in conference play where she led the league in scoring with more than 27 ppg and had the two record-breaking performances.

It was bizarre that a few days after being excluded from the all-conference teams, Pierre was named a Naismith top-five player at her position.

With all that said, I honestly am not all that upset. I'm not a huge fan of individual awards in team sports for this very reason.

She is probably one of the best third team AA ever. Should have at least been second team, imo.

Coach Ralph's media gathering at the NCAA venue in Durham. She's very good in these settings.

Coach Ralph's Oregon post-game remarks. She brought Jordyn Oliver with her, and if you have an extra couple of minutes, I highly recommend listening to her remarks about Shea and the program.

I like Oliver, wished she would have stayed with Duke, but sounds like she made the right decision to go to Vanderbilt. Glad to see her do well in Nashville. Now let me take some allergy medication.
