It's a little before my time but why is this the first time I've heard he coached at UConn?

Terrible, i've texted my other diehard UConn fans my age and they never knew this either. Our marketing is so bad, Valvano is a beloved figure.

Wow! I'm not from the state and only began following UConn hoops since the late 80s, but I too never knew that. You'd think they would have made note of such a long time ago. As much as I love the UConn men's hoops program, they've been good with getting a lot of bad press but seem to do a poor job with the good news.

When I was a kid I stumbled across his name in a media guide's archive section, otherwise I definitely wouldn't have known.

Remember too that a few years later Dee Rowe had another asst coach of note, Jim O'Brien. O'Brien later was a head coach at BC and Ohio State.

Kinda funny O'Brien would have been Perno's successor but when he took the BC job P was still the coach. Calhoun came on the scene a year later. Not to be insulting but we had an athletic program decent FB, national champs in soccer, many BB NCAA appearances, BB college world series and great and later famous coaches BEFORE 1986!!!! Many BYers date history from 1986. Not so.Calhoun proceeded to kick BCU's arse about 25 straight times, many said as revenge for not hiring him before O'Brien.!!!!!!!
