UVA making the committee proud

I guess Tony Bennett the singer performed better than the team coached by Tony Bennett, the coach.

:(

This team was 13-7 and finished 3rd in the ACC. The ACC. Let that sink in.

Horrible job by the selection committee. Deserves all the shade
They had a wildly unbalanced schedule in which they got the worst teams twice and UNC and Duke once. I think Pitt once too. They still got beat by 22 by Notre Dame and didn't beat any of the tops teams in the conference except Clemson once.

Every Big East team played a tougher schedule. They had to play UConn, Marquette and Creighton two or three times EACH. Let that sink in. No benefit from unbalanced schedules.

NCAA Net Rankings, their new metric
St John's 32
VA 54
St John's also ahead of most of the 6 bid MWC

KenPom
St John's 25 (the highest rated team omitted)
VA 69 (the lowest rated at large bid)
4 MWC teams rated significantly below St John's

Let that sink in too

Travesty, and conference affiliation doesn't help them. Although our resident Cinci fans thinks it does too

Playing devil's advocate: PC, Xavier and Butler all lost last night in the NIT. Not a good look for our league.

This dude Spiro is really sending it in. Quite enjoyable.
Spero is really unheralded but enjoyable to listen to.

We should recognize him from he and Debbie Antonelli having called our first weekend games last year.

Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Not difficult to imagine McClelland demonstrating this degree of enthusiasm in his role of creating the best brackets and choosing the deserving teams for the tournament. Eyes are 2/3 shut.

Virginia got smoked by 22 vs Notre Dame, lost 75-41 to Vtech and needed OT to escape BC, not like they were that good. Lost 65-41 to Wisconsin.

A team that hung 90 on UConn likely would have had a better showing....
Bluntly, this is where the eye test has to have some role.

Virginia hasn't looked like a Tournament team for months.

St. John's went toe to toe with #1 and looked like they belong. (Of course, the Committee didn't watch conference tournament games so that didn't matter, but still.)

There's way too much money at stake for the ADs and conference commissioners to be willing to take their hands off the wheel, but they really should outsource the selection job to passionate fans and commentators.

I have to imagine the Field of 68 guys (minus Goodman, guy) would do a better job, would thoroughly research their task, would relish the responsibility, and would put in the effort, much more so than these suits.

I'll never forget how crazy Gampel was against Nebraska in '97.
OTOH, 2015. Not so much. Only time I had my own seats in the lower bowl at Gampel.

A few months ago I asked Trilly on Twitter what it would take for UVa to move on from, or at least get concerned by, Tony Bennett. Naturally, they defended him in droves, but man do I look like a genius this morning. Sad to say because I don't mind their fans and would welcome continued success in the ACC from a program not named Duke or UNC, but they make it so hard to root for them.

I don't think the committee chair cares....it was written in stone apparently that UVa gets a bid regardless of how putrid they are. The ACC had 1 very good team this year, 1 ok team and the rest middling to bad. UVa only played UNC & Duke once, lost of course and didn't crack 50 in either game.....their record is meaningless. The UVa 13-7 record in ACC pales in comparison to Seton Hall's 13-7 record in the BE. No rationale for UVa to be in tourney.

UVA’s resume was atrocious. They played a total of 3 teams in the Top 25 of NET all season. All double-digit losses for UVA.

2-7 in Quad 1. And they lost those 7 games by an average of 21 points!

On the plus side of the ledger there’s. . . nothing. Not a single win against a team that finished in the Top 25 of the AP Poll or the NET.

So basically, they played nobody and beat nobody. And just about every time they were in the same area code as a halfway-decent team, they not only lost but got run off the court. Even Notre Dame (13-20, 124 NET, 0 Quad 1 Wins) beat them by 22!

Their washout of a game against Colorado State is pretty much exactly who UVA has been all year.

.-.
Quad One Games:

St. John’s (4-10, 29% win rate)
Ave. Score: 76-77 (1 point loss)

UVA (2-7, 22% win rate)
Ave Score: 52-69 (17 point loss)

LOL. Has there ever been an at-large team with a worse Q1 loss margin?

UVA just put $2,000,000 into the conference coffers. I'm sure the ACC is pleased with their performance.

He is horrible. To my eyes he sneakily lost that game for them as he needed to be at least a secondary ball handler and sometimes primary, and his decision making is absolutely horrible. He’s really bad, and shouldn’t be this bad.
And he played all 40 minutes last night. Which tells you where PC's roster is without Devin Carter. English needs to hit the portal hard or they'll stink next year.
