Before this game I really had no idea how USF was doing this year and there record was pretty middling. I was impressed with how hard they played, their speed, and of course the 3 point shooting. I was also impressed with the coaching - Fernadez was very good at getting time-outs every time Uconn started to string together a few good possessions. He was able to get his team to refocus and come out of the breaks strong.
I was not impressed with the refs - I think Fernandez had some legitmate beefs and Geno did too - they just seemed pretty arbitrary in what fouls they called and when they called offensive or defensive fouls.

Officials were equal opportunity offenders today.

I think Bonita Spence is the worst official in wcbb. However, today she was outdone by Michele O'Connor-St Pierre who Spence had to overrule a few times.

But I agree it was equal opportunity poor officiating.

Kelly Faris will have a Fouled Out on her record -- a shame, because one of the fouls assigned to her was actually on Dolson, and another was actually on a USF player.

Anytime that Spence is on the officiating crew expect a klot of bad calls. Her ineptitude rubs off on the other refs. At least they sucked in both directions.

I have no doubt that Faris committed five fouls sometime during the game. She was having a very bad day.

It felt like an old-time slog against Rutgers. Very physical. UConn finally pulled away a bit behind Hayes's brilliant offense and Dolson's monster game. Otherwise the score would've looked squeezed in the Stringer wringer as well.

Good game to have now to get tougher.

What I can't understand is why a player fouls when someone is taking a three point shot.

Most often because they're charging at the shooter from a distance and can't stop their own momentum.

The reason why the Huskies had such a tough time today is
1 They were a little out of sorts (not sure what that means but then no-one can dispute it)

2 The officiating was the worst I've seen in 65 years of watching Division l Women's basketball

3 There were 13,000+ fans in the stands today and the Huskies are not used to playing before such a large crowd...certainly not one as large and quiet as this one was.

Other minor reasons might include 4-20 3-point shooting; allowing 10-26 3-pointers from USF ; and an inability to stop USF from beating them off the dribble. But as I say, just minor reasons.

usf has played rutgers, louisville, and georgetown tough, all in losing efforts. one of the reasons uconn didn't look great today was because usf is a good team, with a very good coach, and, had they not lost smith for the season, might have been one of the better teams in the BE. Fernandez is one of the underrated coaches. one mistake he made today, though, might have been not getting the T earlier. he had every right to blow his top. one reason that orekhova struggled so much in the second half was the holding, courtesy of caroline and company, that reminded me a bit of stanford's way of defending maya. but, you do that against a player like that until the refs stop you.

Very impressive game by SF. Good quick guards who are not afraid to penetrate and 2 big kids with 3 point range who are not afraid to shoot from there. What was most impressive for me is that they were well coached; they actually run a real offense trying to clear the shooters with a lot of screens. UConn won becouse Tiff will just not let it lose. She was AMAZING!

UConn plays poorly, blame it on the officials. At least, this time, this forum is extending well deserved credit to USF.

UConn playing poorly may or may not have anything to do with the officiating. Bad calls are always bad calls. Yesterday it was clear that both teams had a number of bad calls against. Examples being the blocking foul called on Caroline when it was clear she was out the new zone under the basket by more than a foot and long in place commented on, also, by the broadcast team and a number of fouls called against USF that should have been no calls. Bad calls are just bad whoever they are against and that was noticed throughout the game thread yesterday.

The bottom line is that UCONN played terrible. If it had not been for Stef and Tiffany, UCONN would have lost. This kind of effort can not happen Monday against a quality team like Duke or it will result in a loss. With that said I have all the confidence in the world that a different UCONN Team then what we saw yesterday will show up tomorrow.

I didn't see anyone blaming UConn's poor play on the refs. I did see people commenting that the officiating was bad for both teams in fact I think UConn got the benefit of more calls than USF. But the officiating overall was horrible.

As are you, to the forum. At least. This time.

How sad you must be in the normal circumstance, VA, when it fails to live up to your standards.

Actually, I think the folks who participate here are pretty nice about the abilities of other teams - maybe they are too harsh to UCONN players and staff at times, however! JMO

While there have been complaints about the officiating (even Geno did), I haven't seen posters blaming poor play by the officials. Maybe the occasional post, but certainly not enough to ignore your blanket statement about this board.

And I'm pretty sure that "this forum" has extended credit to other teams for forcing UConn to play poorly.

My brother is a USF season ticket holder. Before the game he called me and said "we like to run, we can shoot better than last year, and Jazmine Wynn will steal a lot of balls. We will give UConn a good game."
Mentally, Iwent "yeah, yeah" (you don't contradict your big bro, you wait till after!)
Well, at half time I called him and said, okay, you guys are good. Why didn't you mention the Australian and the Ukrainian?
He laughed.
Props to Jose and hs team. Thank heavens for Tif and Stef! On to the Dookies!

It is true the officiating in WCBB is terrible. Bonita Spence is always bad and the other official was worse than her. BUT they were consistemtly bad. As many bad calls on USF as UConn.

Most of us on this board give credit to the other team when they play well. To Jose's credit USF played hard on every play. They never quit when UConn made a run and always competed. It was a tough game and the reason UConn "didn't play well" was because USF did.

What may be a little ignored here is that the kids draining the 3s were USFs bigger kids. It is not the sort of O that bigs are used to defending. And those kids were unconscious. That happens. But on the other hand, SD used them on her O and on the boards.

I think that the team played very well yesterday against a team that forced them into making adjustments. The important thing was that they could and did make those adjustments. As Geno said after the game any player(s) will have an off day. In this game the players who where having a difficult time getting their shots to fall were making very solid contributions to the team effort. I think that if Geno was really concerned about the play he would have been gone to the bench more...I'm thinking about BB whose speed and jumping ability might have had an impact on their offense. It was a great game and I ain't got no complaints. In the end I don't think the officiating affected the outcome.
