USC Gamecocks - The Offseason 2025

Do Gamecock fans think Geno was intentionally taking a shot

I don’t think he was intentionally trying but when I just heard the clip, which is all most people heard, then yes it did sound like it.

Regardless, he did infer that the reason A’ja got a statue is because she lead us to our first championship. People who follow the program closely know it was absolutely more than that. A’ja is beloved by the SC community for all the other stuff she has done.

IMO, he might have been generally commenting about statues and that UConn doesn't do it. He also may have been referring to another coach who is no longer coaching ....

Doesn't matter what we think. The person who clearly took it personal is Dawn, which is great because this should serve as motivation for her to coach another undefeated season in 25-26. Apparently, it's been "too long" since the last one since people wanna chirp now.

It was clearly a swipe at A'ja, and Dawn doesn't play that. Insult her all you want, if you must. However, A'ja is off limits.

If this is what ignites her fire for 25-26, then good. Let's roll. Revenge Tour loading.

I love the man, but he was being a smarta.. while playing to the local press. Live by the quip, die by the quip. I'm sure that he has reached out to Dawn to apologize and pay his respects. I hope that he has reached out to A'ja as well. She is a gem. Geno recruited her hard, for the very reasons her statue stands proudly on SC's campus.

The comment was general. He didn't say it was Dawn explicitly She's not the only school with a statue for a coach or player. He could've been referring to Muffet, which would make sense, as they don't like each other. They would shade each other constantly back then.

No offense to Dawn, but I think she took his comment too personally when really, he could've been referring to a coach who has a mutual bond of hatred towards him.

i agree

I'm not necessarily aiming this response at you, but I do find it interesting that people seem unbothered with the idea of Mulkey having expectations for a player (and disciplining said player who isn't meeting them) but aren't okay with Dawn for having similar expectations (and holding players accountable). What am I missing?
based on what I saw the past two seasons
It would be laughable to say that Coach Mulkey had much control of her team
ms Williams plays the whole game and consistently plays hero, ball, and takes bad shots
The team seems unorganized offensively and seems to get by on pure talent(imho they had three players that were better than anyone on South Carolina’s roster with a possible exception of Edwards)
While i’ve never thought that coach Staleys teams
we’re great offensively she has complete control of her team, the attention of her players, and that you play hard and take direction or you won’t be playing. And for what it’s worth as a Uconn fan.
I thought this was one of the coach Staleys better coaching jobs taking a talented but Flawed roster
to the Final

I agree. It was a swipe, and he had every right to do it at the parade. To the victor go the spoils. I think back to 2023 after the Aces beat the Liberty and Becky Hammon took swipes at Stewie at the parade. She had every right to do so at that time.

Either the offended will cry about it or do something about it. I have a feeling that Dawn will do the latter.

Names are mostly filled in to the rosters of teams playing in 3x3 Nationals beginning tomorrow. Not all are complete. They only have Joyce and Maddy listed for USC. They have MiLaysia playing for the Chaos USA team along side Cierra Burdick which seems like a fitting name if true. UF and Okla St rosters not listed aTm but both dropped tweets with the players they’re sending.

He could’ve been talking about his own players or Muffet. Dawn isn’t the only coach with statues.

He was talking about A'ja Wilson.

Congrats Dawn on getting your statue! This will go nicely near year 2020 end of year No. 1 ranking banner.
So, the multiple NCAA titles, SEC regular season and tournament titles, 2020 Olympic championship, and National COY awards don't exist?

Interesting.

Clearly, Columbia wanted to erect a statue for a future HOF COACH who ALSO reached HOF status as a PLAYER. Her impact on women's basketball, as both a COACH and a PLAYER, cannot be understated. When taking into consideration her achievements as a COACH and a PLAYER, you can see why Columbia did what they did.

I didn’t hear him say “A’ja Wilson” in the comment. It’s literally just assumptions that could pertain to multiple people.
He said that at some schools, people get a statue from winning ONE championship. ONE. The implication here was clear.

How many people associated with WBB have (1) a single national championship and (2) a statue?

Not Dawn (three titles). Not Kim (four titles as HC, one as AC, and two as a player). Not Muffet (two titles). Not Pat (RIP). Not Seimone Augustus (zero titles at LSU). Who does that leave? A'ja, who has one national championship and a statue.

He took a clear shot at A'ja, and Dawn peeped game. She'll have the squad ready in 25-26. Game on!

Didn’t realize UConn had so many contortionists among their fan base.
I have to laugh at this point! He wasn't going to come out and say, "South Carolina built A'ja a statue after winning only one title!" It's called "shade" for a reason.

He has the right to throw shade. I just think it's silly considering that we have multiple players who have won more championships than A'ja, but they'll never have a statue (not an individual one, anyway) erected for them.

Can’t we just accept that UConn just doesn’t do the statue thing. I think doing a statue for Rebecca or Dee or Maya or Stewie just doesn’t fit the UConn belief/style. It’s always been very clear that Geno’s approach is that it’s all about team. Nobody is bigger than team. So it would be really inconsistent to build a statue for an individual. If Dawn and SC want to honor someone (Aja, Dawn) with a statue…that’s fine. That’s their thing. Let them honor their people the way they want to honor them. In my mind Dawn is trying to create her own culture. To do so requires breaking away from the Tennessee history, Kim’s history, and yes, Geno’s legacy. So let’s just let Dawn be Dawn - and continue to establish her own greatness in her own way. Amen!

I think the thing that you and others aren't grasping is that these monuments have greater meaning than championships. A'ja's statue is a symbol of local pride about a woman from the area who took the women's basketball program to the highest of highs. The statue of Dawn wasn't even something she wanted when the city wanted to honor her with one, but when she learned that only 5-6% of all statues are of women, and the goal of the organization behind the statue was to right that statistic, she thought it was an honor to accept the recognition and help further the legacy of female achievement. Additionally, the statue is near where they Confederate flag used to fly at the state capital so there is also a sense of poetic justice resonating from the statue of a black person being located next to that previous symbol of slavery and division.

While both statues wouldn't have happened without winning a national championship, the meaning behind both goes much deeper. I hope that helps clear things up!

Gamecocknation could care less how UConn honors its athletes. It’s Husky fans who feel the need to pass judgement on how other schools memorialize their athletic accomplishments. So yes, we accept what UConn does, or doesn’t do, as we just don’t give a damn.
