OT: USA WINS HOCKEY GOLD

Easily the two signature images of the Olympics. Golds in what I would consider two of the most primetime events.

Alyssa Liu not giving and having fun, completely being herself was great. It'll be interesting to see if the hairstyle takes off.

The Jack Hughes photo is the epitome of what it takes to make something of yourself in the land of the free: grit, toughness, and skill. I mean the man took a stick to the grill. It was a refreshing interview afterwards, exuded pride for the country.

On that play, Hughes not only had to slow the freight train that was a McDavid rush but then make a very ballsy poke that earned the puck. Then he had the wherewithall to have the right spacing to bury the shot.
Hey, I missed that, he broke his tooth from today’s stick? USA is going to get that bill!

46 years. Hockey is the only sport that I could not even fake playing. I can throw a baseball, football, shoot hoops and swing a golf club and tennis racket but…..I can’t skate or even fake it in hockey. I guess I could lie down in front of the goal…
You could probably play floor hockey in gym class. It’s the skating that’s the game changer for most people.

Yes the highstick which resulted in a four minute double minor and broken tooth.
A few of his teeth were knocked out. Hockey players are legit tough guys.

Sorry don’t know how to link the video up to my this UConn family. Please go see Jack Hughes post game interview. If you watched the game & then saw what he had to say a few minutes after the game about being an American & the overall teamwork- it gave me chills & put a smile on my face & as he said- made me proud.
This?

What a game. American guts prevail over talent every time. 🏅🇺🇸

It's a bit weird you're telling people how to react after an amazing Olympic victory for the US.

@superjohn: The last guy asked if I needed a Kleenex and you're saying I'm the one telling people how to react?

Let me ask you, what's wrong with that first quote? Take your time researching the 11 Winter Olympics before this one and get back to me.

I was in the car tonight listening to our local sports station talk about the game. A caller came on gleefully exclaiming how he hated Canada because last year at some hockey exhibition the Canadian fans booed the US national anthem. Of course they did. Apparently the booing was all this schmuck remembered about what was happening at the time and didn't even consider why they were booing.

I have a problem with stupid.

You told Deepster how he should react to the victory "no need for the jingoism" and you made some weird political reply post to me in another thread about the game when my post had nothing to do with politics. I'm proud the US team brought home the gold and it's made even sweeter they did it against their rival who is the more talented team.

1. "Suck it Canada" hit me the wrong way. If I misinterpreted that into something it's not, then have my apology.
2. Deep's post was stupid and jingoistic and I'm not apologizing for calling that asswipery out.

I'm happy US hockey has come such a long way. I liked what Hughes said about how there's a brotherhood of US players. I'm also just coming to grips that two guys named Tkachuk play for our team :-)

I was mostly interested in watching a great game - given how the Canadians had to come back a couple times just to make it here, I thought there was a chance it would be a boring 5-1 game with the US coasting. It was anything but, thankfully.

This wasn't the 1980 CCCP team, so couldn't really manufacture fake "hate" against the Canucks like it seems at least 2-3 here could. If anything, I wanted to see Tage get a gold medal. I will say the Canadians missed having Sid out there. Sully was good here in Pgh for a few years until he wasn't, so good to see he can still coach a winner.
So you wanted Canada to win, so you're a little upset I get it. The fact that you couldn't just flat out answer yes or no before explaining your thoughts gives me the impression that you wanted Canada to win. Not to mention you bringing up the fact the US hadn't won gold the last 46 years comes across as snipiness.

Now while I would agree that Deepsters post is classless, is it any different then saying suck it Duke? Its playful sports banter on a message board and should be nothing more then that.

Canada did have some sweet unis - love the red and black.

Hockey is THE sport in Canada and all the proof was the expressions on the Canadian players’ faces after the game. It’s something extra for them. Sports news in the summer there is hockey.
But I bet the biggest thrill these guys can get is the Stanley Cup over a gold medal on teams that have been together just 2 weeks, but it’s still a big thrill for them.

I don't know where you're getting that I'm "upset" at the game outcome. I moved right on to the Pirates spring training games and didn't give it another thought except to reply here.

I also don't know how I'm "snippy" mentioning 46 years between golds when the post I was responding to made an asinine claim about American guts winning every time despite going 0-for-Winter Olympics during those 46 years. How are people missing that context?

Suck it Canada, suck it St. John's. They are our rivals, it's the best rivalry going in sports, and this is the biggest game between the two countries since 2010. I'm pumped we brought home the gold and I'm pumped it burns them up they're bringing home the silver.

By the way, I root for Canadian teams to win every Stanley Cup if the Blackhawks aren't involved.

I thought it was a funny response. It’s much weirder to me that people have their panties so twisted up about it.

I don't know. Just look at the guys from the original Dream Team or some of the other guys who've taken home medals from international team competitions. Ryder Cup, World Baseball, etc. It means something pretty important to those men and women.

Sidney Crosby is proud to have two Stanley Cups. He's even prouder to have scored the Golden Goal to win the Olympics for Canada.

Posts can be misread, but I do see you making excuses for Canada while refusing to give credit to the US so that kind of gives me the impression that you were rooting for Canada which is fine.

If "excuses" means Canada not having Crosby and objectively gagging on more scoring opportunities, then I guess I'm guilty.

To me, it's more like UConn winning a tight game vs a ranked opponent where the opponent was missing a key player and choked at the FT line in crunch time. I'm rooting for UConn, but I know there was some element of luck that got us that win. And generally speaking, it's OK to mention that fortunate outcome on the BY w/o being torched for it.

I'm trying to remember a better hockey game in this century and I can't come up with one, not even the Pens cup games. I'm happy I watched it, it was amazing.
