USA U23 National Team Invitees Named

I'm sure she meant what she said at the time she said it.

I'd hate to be held to everything I said as a 16-year-old. Maybe you had the world all figured out then.
Mostly figured out I am still evolving and learning. I'm accountable enough to be held to anything I said when I was 16 as easily as anything I said yesterday.

Does this interfere with UConn's Italy trip? I know practices for the trip begin early August.

UConn's trip to Italy is scheduled for Aug 13-24th. https://www.sny.tv/uconn/news/huskies-summer-plans-include-trip-to-italy/216736170

The 2017 U23 Four Nations Tournament, which will include the USA, Australia, Canada and Japan, will be a round-robin tournament played Aug. 12-15 in Tokyo (arena TBA).

Additionally, Geno Auriemma, 2009-16 USA Basketball Women’s National Team head coach and head coach at the University of Connecticut, will serve as the lead clinician during training camp, guiding all of the sessions except the team practices and games.
USA Women’s U23 Training Camp To Feature 40 Elite Collegiate Athletes

Considering that both will be practicing prior to travelling there is an obvious conflict for both the UConn players and their head coach.

Maybe a member of the hoard will clear it up with Geno.

My other question is how the 4 US teams will be picked. A team of Stevens, Williams, Collier, Samuelson and XXX would have a significant advantage over the rest. Who would be the 5th player? Durr? Canada? Brown? My choice would be Ionescu.

The UConn players will participate in the trials but not play in the Four Nation tournament. CD, Shea and Marisa will run the practices in Storrs until Geno returns with Lou, Pheesa, Azura and Gabby.

  7. K. Mitchell
  8. K. Samuelson
  9. A. Stevens
  10. V. Vivians
  11. G. Williams
  12. A. Wilson
My prediction.

I would take Cunningham, Flaherty, or Ionescu over Vivians.

Her past comments aside, not sure how Mitchell blends into that type of team where she is no longer options 1-2-3.

I'm guessing the games in Italy won't be televised so is anyone from this site going? If so can you stream the games on Facebook so we can see them? :)

How can DD not be on that list?? She not in Turkey either?? (No Turkey jokes please, I'm resisting)

A basic truth---nearly everyone said things as a teen--24 hours later--rejected. (adults too I suppose)

Of course some do. Some even change over the course of 2 years or since 2015 when Mitchell again no thanks to a USA basketball invitation.
But some don't and some actually mean what they say no matter how long ago they said it.

Another truism---!!

Swamped as usual, with another very late supper on tap: DID ANYBODY DO A BREAKDOWN of the number of players for every college represented?? If not, WILL someone who is younger and interested in such things???? :)

  1. J.Canada(18), A.Durr (21)
  2. L.Brown(18), .......................................[K.Mitchell (23)]
  3. KLS (20), Ionescu (15), Collier (20)
  4. Gabby (14), Billings(17), Anigwe (21)
  5. K.Brown(15), Stevens(18), Russell (16)
This is a super deep field. Wilson has been given the invite to the USA U-23 so she is not on my list. Can three Huskies make the team?

KLS, Collier - two POY finalists that bring 20ppg. One is a three point specialist and the other a demon in the paint. You just about have to have them on the squad.

Gabby is the enigma. I picked Gabby because she is Gabbulous. Do you leave the National Defensive Player of the Year off the team? IDTS But where do you put her?

Offensively she has played 3yrs as a F/C . Defensively she can guard all 5 positions. On a team this deep she doesn't have to play as an very undersized 4 or guard the 5.

Where would you guys put her?

Better post.

As I reflect on the news I am struck by Z's selection since she sat last year. Guess she's OK, huh?

Jatarie White pretty much sat her entire career thus far and she somehow scored an invite as well....

FWIW, I think she's good enough but nobody has seen her play in college so apparently somebody else thinks this as well...

Ive never seen her play, I have no idea if she is any good or not.... that being said.... I wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiished she had ended up at NC State instead of Texas after she decided to transfer.

Agree. Cox and Mompremier have accomplished much more in college than White did in her time at South Carolina.

Very true. I was surprised to not see Cox and I had completely forgotten about Mompremier. They've both been on teams before so I have to imagine that they declined?

I've heard that Cox declined as she is taking the summer to heal up injuries. Karen Aston is one of the assistant coaches for the U23 team - why would it surprise anyone that White was invited?

Yeah I would pick Ionescu or Nared over Vivians, but Vivians has the potential to lite it up so we'll see

I hope Russell makes the team. She outplayed most of the centers she played last year.

I have to believe that this is very much an Olympic Team developmental program. With 40 invites (more like 36 given UConners' situation) the powers that be can be curious and very much looking to the future.

Sold! I'd take that list to the bank any day.

Where is Beatrice Mompremier? :)

Mulkey under-utilized Chou last season. I don't think that will be the case next season.

I figured it had something to do with health for Cox.
And my surprise about White is still the same as what I mentioned previously. Her lack of play in the last few years. Karen is not one of the assistant coaches for the team, but she is on the team selection committee. I will continue to be surprised by the decision because Wes Moore and Tonya Cardoza are members of the selection committee as well but I don't see any Temple or NC State players in this mix. Now I don't know the process for how the invitees were selected but I can't imagine one coach would have that much sway?
