Angela Salvadores had a miserable day shooting. She's the player that tore up USA's U17 team for 40+ points last year which almost cost USA the Gold Medal. She's a Duke signee. The complete Spain team had a miserable day shooting as a team they shot 19-72. Have to think they'll play better in Russia. As I said in an earlier post, Spain is the 1st team USA will play in Russia.

Did Salvadores get special defense attention or did she just play poorly?

Wish I knew, as far as I know there's no video available for this exhibition game.

Ouch, Angela ... On the outside looking in I'll say she felt the need to force because she's the leader of the team. When you go from playing with grown woman to now 19 year old spaniards you may feel the need to press,, especially when playing against a superior team. Once again, this is me viewing from the outside looking in ... On a brighter note it's good to see A. Stevens flirt with a double double in limited play.

Now speaking w/o my duke glasses on I'm ready to see Collier in an Uconn uniform. Her stats over the past couple games suggest that she is literally everywhere on the court. 9 points and 8 rebounds is pretty good stats for a small forward.

Wish I knew as well. One thing I did look at is turnovers (the point guard in me). She shot 1 for 10, but had zero turnovers. 75-51 OUCH

Actually, I think the gold medal was almost lost because head coach Sue Phillips (a California HS/AAU coach) did a terrible job, staying in her soft zone defense virtually the whole game and refusing to pressure Salvadores or go man to shut down Spain's only legitimate scoring threat. Spain's two other double-digit scorers (with 14 and 13 points) shot a terrible 8 for 25 while the rest of the entire Spanish team was even worse, scoring an anemic total of 8 points on 2 for 22 shooting. :(

Phillips made no in-game adjustments on Salvadores, even as she, and she alone, was lighting up team USA.

Yes, Salvadores' stat line in this U19 exhibition was horrible, going 1 for 10 shooting in 16 minutes with zero assists and zero steals (or turnovers). But any kid can have a lousy game, though Angela better watch out for the infamous McCallie bus  I'm curious to see how she performs in Russia; it won't be against 15, 16 and 17 year American high schoolers anymore. And soon at Dook she'll be facing a steady diet of older, better athletes and better coaches in the very strong ACC.

She's been a starter in a pro league this past year in Spain..... so she is used to playing against older and better players than she will face in the ACC... AAC... Pac 12.... CIAA, MEAC.. et al . Ex college players... ex WNBA players.... not high school girls worried about making a McDonald's all star game... about recieving text messages from pimple faced teenagers.. , prom dates.... twitter...... shopping at the mall... etc

You are misremembering and understating several things. Salvadores was the MVP of the tournament which means she did not only light up the US, she lit up everyone. She did not do it by her self, she had plenty of help. Many of us were scrambling to figure out how many high D1 prospects were on that team. IMO there were at least 5. One of them has signed with Florida state. Junio the off guard/ PG was an awesome player. Phillips could/should have made some adjustments but give the kid some credit. She dropped 40 on the US, was MVP of the tournament and got a scholarship to Duke in the process. Salvadores has major game!

The shopping at the mall part was kind of over the top, no?

That's exactly what people who watch her say. That aspect of her game reminds me of the kid who wore #23. Not the one with the patented Lewis Launch. The one before that, with over 3,000 points.

Look at the bright side, these same two teams play again in a few days, maybe she was sandbagging.

My biggest worry about her is that she has been playing so much basketball. Last summer for the U-19 and another Spanish squad in Eurobasketball something.... then the professional league..... now a full slate this summer. Hope she doesnt burn out before she gets to Durham.

Coco...I think Huskies Rule is 100% accurate. Before torching USA for 40 points, Salvadores had averaged 16.5 pts per game in the prior 6 games. She is good, but also a volume shooter. She took 115 shots that tournament while the next highest player on Spain took 68. The USA coach did nothing to try and hold Salvadores down. No full court pressure, no double, no box and 1... She had 40 pts and the rest of the team had 35 TOTAL. I'm sure Dawn Staley knew to plan a better defense.

Triad...before you elevate her to Stewie/MoJeff status, keep in mind she shot under 50% for that tournament, only 56% from the free throw line and had more turnovers (30) than assists (25). She averaged 31 minutes per game and played 85 minutes against powerhouses Egypt, Italy and South Korea who finished a combined 1-8 in the tournament. Spain won those games by a combined 94 points.

I'm not saying she isn't very good. But prior to the 1-10 against USA, she shot 1-11 against Australia. That's 2-21 in two games...somebody with pimples was covering her... ;) The first game she was a more than respectable 7-18. Overall, so far she has 7 assists and 6 turnovers, which is an improvement on the U-17 tournament. Duke can be excited about her arrival in Durham, just don't over do it & pull a muscle cheering... :D

Completely agree. For same reason glad to hear Moriah got some down time in Texas and hope Kia Nurse will be able to have some free time.

Interesting tourney. Collier and Dangerfield acquitted themselves splendidly. Anyone know why Cox had such poor numbers? Sure she's human, but she only played 3 minutes in 1 game. was she injured?

Wilson, Stevens, and White are all college players. I'm guessing that Cox was too young and perhaps
a bit overmatched by the more experienced college players.

Is Cox considering South Carolina, Louisville, or any of the schools represented by the other coaches? Just thinking out loud here. :)
