UPDATE:
Thanks to Bone Dog and the very astute readers here on the boneyard a significant number of errors were pointed out. I have therefore decided to do a major UPDATE to the game analysis: I have updated the substitution of Kayleigh Heckel for Kennedy Smith due to Kennedy's season-ending injury. I have also taken Bone Dog's advice and shifted the match-ups so that Ashlynn Shade is matched up with Talia van Oelhoffen and Kaitlyn Chen is matched up with Kayleigh Heckel. I also adjusted the tallies for the points and rebounds off the bench and adjusted for the fact that Gottlieb and not Mulkey is coaching USC. If Mulkey was coaching USC I believe it would have been a tougher game to win.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
I don't know any serious fan of women's college basketball who isn't looking forward to this one. Ju Ju Watkins and her new cast of quality basketball players headlined by Kiki Irafen promise to satisfy even the most avid fan. There should be some exciting match-ups in this one. USC's schedule hasn't been quite as demanding as UConn's has been but they still have gotten the job done. USC averages 86.5 points per game: UConn 81.0. USC holds their opponents to 50.5 points per game; UConn 53.4 points per game. USC gets to the line considerably more than UConn, USC - 15.9 free throws per game; UConn 6.4 free throws per game. USC hits 7.1 three-pointers per game; UConn 9.0 per game. USC has the rebounding edge over UConn, USC - 44.7 rebounds per game; UConn has 37 rebounds per game. USC holds their opponents to 30.9 rebounds per game; UConn holds their opponents to 30.5 rebounds per game...hmmm. USC assists on 18.9 baskets per game; UConn assists on 22.8 baskets per game. USC commits 15.3 turnovers per game but forces 22.6 turnovers on their opponents. This results in 28.7 points off turnovers for USC. UConn takes better care of the basketball committing only 10.8 turnovers per game and they force their opponents into 17.8 turnovers per game resulting in 20.6 points off turnovers. USC gets 12.7 steals and 7.2 blocks per game while UConn gets 10.6 steals and 3.6 blocks per game.
UConn has faced better competition than USC. USC's RPI is 38 and its SOS is 108 while UConn's RPI is 4 and its SOS is 16. USC opponents have had the following RPIs: 352, 253, 217, 183, 161, 156, 130, 97, 96, 29, 10. USC's opponents have SOSs of 357, 302, 266, 145, 140, 124, 99, 59, 39, 15, 7.
UConn has played opponents with the following RPIs: 235, 205, 156, 140, 127, 121, 82, 58, 32, 26, 10; UConn's opponents have SOS's of 298, 288, 266, 179, 118, 68, 65, 32, 17, 15, 5.
PLAYER ANALYSIS:
Ice Brady, 6'3" - RS. Sophomore - Forward vs Rayall Marshall 6'4" - Senior - Center / Forward - Rayall averages 8.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists 1.2 steals, and 2.2 blocks per game. She only turns the ball over 1 time per game. Ice will have to play tough in this one. She will need to box out, deny Rayall the basketball, and try and be more assertive on the offensive end. Ice averages 5.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, .9 steals and .5 blocks per game. Ice turns the ball over 1.36 times per game. UConn will bring Jana El-Alfy off the bench. Jana averages 6.0 points, and 5.7 rebounds while USC will bring Vivian Iwuchuwu off the bench she averages 2.8 points and 2.3 rebounds. While the position may appear even the match-up is a horse of a different color. ADVANTAGE - USC
Sarah Strong, 6'2" - Freshman - Forward vs Ki Ki Irafen, 6'3" - Graduate - Forward - Ki Ki was probably the hottest commodity in the transfer portal this past summer and USC won the jackpot. Ki Ki averages 18.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals but she also turns the ball over 2.27 times per game. In what promises to be a fantastic match-up and will certainly challenge UConn's freshman phenom we will see Sarah Strong take on this match-up. Sarah averages 17.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. Sarah takes pretty good care of the basketball only turning the ball over 1.36 times per game. Hopefully, Sarah will stay out of foul trouble because we will need her to stay in the game.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN
Paige Bueckers, 6'0" - RS-Senior - Guard vs Ju Ju Watkins, 6'2" - Sophomore - Guard - Oh boy this is going to be a great match-up. Ju Ju averages 24.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.9 blocks per game. She has a team-leading turn-over stat of 3.18 turnovers per game. She also hits 2.18 three-pointers per game. Paige averages 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. Paige only turns over the basketball 1.45 times per game. She also hits 2 three-pointers per game. It should be noted that Paige takes 14 shots per game while Ju Ju takes 17.8 shots per game. Ju Ju's FG percentage is 45 percent while Paige's is 58 percent. ADVANTAGE - EVEN
Ashlynn Shade, 5'10" - Sophomore - Guard vs Talia van Oelhoffen, 5'11" - Graduate - Talia averages 7.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.1 steals, and .7 blocks per game. She turns the ball over 2.45 times per game. Talia also hits 1.36 three-pointers per game. Ashlynn averages: 8.8 points; 2.4 rebounds; 1.7 assists; 1.5 steals and only turns the ball over .5 times per game. Ashlynn had a break-out game against Iowa State. It will be interesting if she can sustain that level of play against a team like USC. ADVANTAGE - EVEN
Kaitlyn Chen, 5'9" - Graduate - Guard vs Kayleigh Heckel, 5'9" - Freshman - Guard - Kayleigh averages 7.5 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.7 steals, and hits .55 three-pointers per game. She averages 1.64 turnovers per game. Kaitlyn averages: 6.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.1 steals per game. Kaitlyn turns the ball over 1.73 times per game. Kaitlin also hits close to 1 three-pointer per game. I am going to go with Kaitlyn's experience and UConn's more difficult schedule.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN
BENCH:
UConn brings 18.7 points and 12.0 rebounds off the bench per game. USC brings 18 points and 11.1 points per game. It should be noted that USC goes 12 players deep while UConn goes 10 players deep. USC will probably not play its entire bench in this game.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN
INTANGIBLES:
UConn will be playing this one at home in front of the home crowd. I don't think we will see Azzi Fudd in this one but if we do...then we have to add Azzi to the list of intangibles. However, with this being a home game the advantage is slightly in favor for the home team.
ADVANTAGE - UCONN
COACHING:
Originally, I mistakenly thought that Kim Mulkey was coaching USC only to find out that Lindsey Gottlieb is the coach of USC. Geno's and Chris' Hall of Fame bonafides along with his cracker-jack cadre of assistant coaches will prove too much for Coach Gottlieb and her staff. ADVANTAGE - UCONN
SCORE:
UConn - 81
USC - 72
MOV - 9
