But their APR was 909, 961 and 1000 the past 3 years. They must be doing something "right". ;)

Seriously though this is a big issue. It's one thing having an easy class, it's another not even having a class.

Athletically, at the least, if these classes are void and basketball/football teams took the classes, then the NCAA should recalculate APR scores for UNC and penalize as appropriate. If they should have been ineligible for tournaments/bowls then they should ask for money back (ie Memphis).

Let me understand this.

The NCAA feels it has free reign to basically threaten Penn State with complete annihilation if it doesn't accept partial annihilation. It feels it has free reign to reach back in time to install a standard that cannot be met with any current remediation in order to catch a dozen or so fish that it can hold up to the media and says, "See? We is alls about academics!" And it has free reign to walk in Ryan Boatright's front door and demand anything and everything it wants to see - and then takes its time coming to any sort of conclusion.

But, when a member school essentially puts forth falsified grades and fields obviously ineligible athletes, the NCAA shrugs. The U. of North Carolina's record on the field and their APR ratings are not accurate. If the NCAA has no jurisdiction, who does? Me? I'll take that on.

For starters, I won't go all weak in the knees when the perps wear Duke or UNC uniforms. (Sorry, Coach K, the Maggette kerfuffle is back on the table when I assume the throne.)

I wish I summon up more outrage. None of their hypocracy shocks me anymore.

I guess the NCAA can't punish UNC for a bad APR because, technically, they don't have one.

If there were players in the 2005 or 2009 class who took fake classes, shouldn't they technically be declared retroactively ineligible, thus stripping UNC of any wins they totaled with said player on the roster?

Oh, let me guess, UNC "shouldn't have known" and therefore is completely innocent, whereas John Calipari was completely "in the know" when it came to Derrick Rose's SAT scores and Marcus Camby's brand new jeep. And yet, Calipari was still cleared.

The NCAA really has no logical direction to anything they do.

So it isn't cheating as long as everyone is given the equal opportunity to cheat. Good to know!

I agree with CL82. This stuff doesn't even bother me anymore.

Sooooo, basically what the NCAA is saying is " it's only wrong when we say it's wrong!" Absolutely makes sense to me.!

You know what's annoying about this....it makes me feel some sympathy for Calipari. I fail to see much of a difference between a sham SAT score and a sham college class. Actually, I do. And the sham college class is far worse, in my opinion.

We should just create some fictional classes for our players from 4 years ago and then 'recalculate' our APR score and resubmit it to the NCAA!

If the NCAA has made up their mind to punish someone they will; I think they're just done with UNC.

Don't laugh...this is what CAl State Bakyrrrrrsfield did:

Connecticut was the biggest program to be hit with a postseason ban for the 2012-13 season because of a deficient Academic Progress Rate performance -- but Cal State Bakersfield became the biggest winner in the APR review process.

"After initially being declared ineligible for APR reasons, Bakersfield determined that incorrect data had been submitted and contacted the NCAA. The scores were reviewed by outside counsel and an NCAA audit; the adjustment of the numbers from a deficient 879 composite score over four years to a 910 mark that meets the standard for postseason eligibility means the Roadrunners are now cleared for postseason play."

Exactly, we shoulda went for the Kobayashi Maru.

i don't know what's worse that you brought up a star trek reference or that i knew what it was without looking it up.

I thought he was referencing one of the Japanese whaling boats on Whale Wars.

Those who are looking to take action for PSU (at the moment, not only a handful of regents but also some former players) must be loving this.

As Fishy pointed out, how the hell can the NCAA claim they have jurisdiction to punish PSU yet have no jurisdiction to punish UNC?

How is this not a lack of institutional control on UNC's part?

Sounds like the women's board.

Seriously though, it is time for big name schools to rise up, defect from the NCAA and form a new association.

So why hasn't UConn sued yet?

Because Gavin is on campus getting his degree. When he does, it changes our score and makes us in APR compliance.

This is brutal. Great article though, and nice to see more awareness brought to this ridiculous situation.

This is getting some national attention at least...

http://espn.go.com/blog/north-carol...id/9004/why-isnt-the-ncaa-stepping-in-on-afam

still sad

The best parts are the comments at the bottom blaming the writer for bringing up the issue. Say what you will about the APR nightmare but most people here have at least admitted that the basketball program messed up by not following up closely enough on grades. The UNC fans are circling the wagons saying this is a non story and ESPN needs to replace the blogger.

I don't believe this is true.
