UConn knows how to get under your skin by forcing you out of rhythm. They make you feel uncertain and uncomfortable. Your trust doesn't hold up the way it does against other teams. You feel pressure, and when that pressure settles in you don't play under control. When that happens, it makes you doubt how you play the game. At some point you realize your losing ground because UConn is focused on executing their system, while you are trying to just stop the bleeding. You begin to feel the strain because UConn is forcing you to make mistakes. The sense of urgency begins to set in and creeps into every possession. You're trying to keep up which is a dangerous place to be. Then you start taking chances trying to make something happen. UConn doesn't change anything they just continue to execute their system. By continuing to execute their system they take you apart piece by piece play by play. They're steady patient and completely under control while opponents feel it slipping away because their being out played. You begin to feel like you've lost before you ever get started. When you play UConn, you're not playing against a basketball team you're playing against Genos system, executed to a tee with precision, discipline and confidence without deviation. It's a terrible feeling. It's not that UConn overpowers you it's they compete at a level that no team has experienced.

UConn is built differently than other teams. UConn trusts their system and executes it under control. Their consistent repetition knaws at teams. UConn doesn't relax. Their momentum carry's them on each play they execute. By executing you know exactly what you want to do and do it. You don't rely on anything else. Your thought process is clear, and your mind is clearly focused on what you're supposed to do. This eliminates fear and doubt. It's a reaction not a thought process. They know what to do and do it. By executing and being focused on your execution you make it uncomfortable for opponents. UConn does it without deviation because they are disciplined on what to do.

UConn execution makes opponents feel uncomfortable. By executing Genos system, they play relaxed. They're relaxed because they're not thinking of anything other than execution of their defense/offence. When you feel uncomfortable fear sets in, and that fear beings to wear you down throughout the game. Then you make mistakes and that builds on you. Then the realization slowly hits you and you begin to realize UConn has created a gap that will be difficult to close. You eventually realize you're playing against a system you can't replicate. This gets in your head, and you can't shake it.

UConn's game flows and this is what breaks opponents. Executing a system helps you remain in your system. You continue to to repeat it over and over again. It creates an imbalance for your opponent which causes panic, tension and doubt. It comes down to UConn just wears you down by repeating their game plan never letting up and never deviating from what they've been taught. They know how to break your flow. When you face a suffocating defense where many times you can't make a play its frustrating and takes you out of your rhythm and your forced to rush and make decisions to quickly and that imbalance shows.

One game this season against Michigan UConn did deviate from their execution and they almost lost. Geno fixed that. Now there is no let up.

There have been many thoughts on how you beat UConn. The one that I feel is number one is don't let them get in your head because they will. All those teams we have beaten during this win streak have that feeling in their heads. The feeling that they couldn't do anything about what happened to them last season and this season. They know what to expect and have no answer for it. They remember that lost feeling of not being able to overcome UConn's defense. That feeling is still in their heads and that is dangerous. For those players who didn't play against UConn last season they will experience it this season. You can't prepare for it. Fans have said UConn is a well-oiled machine. Well by continually executing Genos system they should be fine because that system is what has put them at a different level. No UConn team has had a defense so intense and overwhelming as this defense. Stay healthy stay out of foul trouble and UConn will repeat.

I do agree that our defense is elite, but I fail to see how we instill "fear" in opponents. During the regular season, we only beat Marquette by 15 and Nova by 14, down by 3 to them at halftime. At no point did I really feel we'd lose any of the closer games, but these teams just don't "fear" us. Maybe it's just using the wrong word.

Like I said, our defense is elite, notwithstanding our average 3 point defense. Several teams have lit us up this season. And because of our elite defense, it turned into a lot of offense. I still think our half court defense is really good, and the relentless pressure does cause other teams to play too fast and make forced AND unforced errors.

But IMHO the days of teams "fearing" UConn are simply over. And there were way too many times this season where the offense went into extended lulls - like 6-10 minute lulls. You talked about the system and execution, but there were no games against elite competition where we played 40 minutes of great basketball. 25 minutes, maybe even 30 minutes.

This season I think we are good enough to not need 40 minutes of elite basketball to win it all, but it will need to be close to that IMHO (as in more than 30 minutes).

Connecticut is 22nd in the country in 3-point defense at .274. Not as elite as their defense overall, but hardly average. An improvement over 56th last year, and the best in several years at least (.272 in 2021, when they finished 30th).
