UConn vs Michigan (Championship)

Duke played a 3/4 zone against them. Out rebounded them by 12-13 boards. Slowed the tempo. Gave them less possessions watched the after dark podcast on this game recently.
Interesting. I don't think Uconn has ever switched to a zone defense this year, I highly doubt Danny switches strategies now. Maybe he will throw it in for a possession or two.

With all do respect to Ray, 2 of Michigan's three losses were extremely slow games - Duke #287 in temp and Purdue #330. The other loss was against Wisconsin who is not slow #100 but they shot 45% from three that game.
I was surprised by Ray's comments as well. He referenced the Indiana/UNLV game in 1987 FF semifinal. I don't remember that game but Alford was on the team and Indiana shot 62%. Final IU 97/UNLV 93. I can't imagine UConn going at that tempo

No, it was comparing position for position, in this case the SF/3 for both teams and whoever wrote up the comparison said Yaxel/Castle was a wash.
Beyond the very strong reason to believe that Steph was a two on that team and Cam was our three, what other positions would you claim that Michigan would gave an advantage?

After answering that, please add your thoughts on each bench and which team as a whole would be able to perform at their highest in comparison to combination of overall abilities.

Please move this convo to the RuffRuff board.

It's a little hard to believe, with as much history as both programs have, that we've never met in the NCAA Tournament.

Of prominent programs, we've had memorable encounters, often multiple ones, with:
  • Duke
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan State
  • UNC
  • Purdue
  • UCLA
  • Florida
  • Gonzaga
  • Kansas
  • Villanova
  • Texas
  • Illinois
  • Alabama
  • SDSU

It's just a weird coincidence that we and Michigan haven't often been good at the same time. They won in 89, made the title game in 92 and 93, when we hadn't yet arrived (except for the Dream Season), then again in 2013 (banned) and 2018 (Ollie). Our back-to-back was when they were digging out from Juwan Howard.

In fact, this might be our most significant first Tournament meeting in a while.

He'd have an advantage over anyone we played at the 3.

We are better everywhere but I'd give Johnson an advantage at the 3. His EM data supports it.

I have never felt so spoiled and entitled as comparing today to all of the other Monday work days that have gone slowly before we have played for a title.

Am I the only one here who wonders who Yaxel can guard? Whoever he’s guarding is gonna run him through so many motions. Who can he keep up with in UConn’s offense? That leg didn’t feel better this morning. I don’t think they can play him, as he’d be too much of a defensive liability. It may take half the first half before they realize he’s hurting more than helping, but if he’s moving the same or worse than last night, AK, Mullins, Ross, Stewie and Ball (whoever he’s guarding) are going to be getting WIDE open 3’s. He’s gotta play defense against UConn. Hurley will challenge his mobility early and often, unlike Arizona post injury. If he’s all better I suppose we’ll see that right away too.
Karaban and Mullins constantly running loops around Reed screens all night will be a handful.

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile and I honestly don’t know how UConn defends that frontline to start the game. Let’s go big and sit Solo and start Reibe. I’m kidding but that would match their size and I’m not sure how else UConn does that.
Problem is Reibe would foul out in the first half.

Can we all just agree to block @RuffRuff and whomever else is involved in this ridiculous conversation for the next 12 hours so we can discuss the actual game?

I'm over it - not sure what more there is to analyze the game, its all out there.

Word is the Michigan crowd there is much thinner than expected.

Just chiming in to add it's astounding how more than half of the thread for the national championship game is about who goes higher in a hypothetical draft between Yaxel and a guy who played for us a couple years ago. Lol.

RuffRuff-ization of the Boneyard.

Dude is obnoxious.

When Stew is not impaired yes. This is not the same Stewart as pre injury and he hasn’t had a lot of game action. Stewart played 7 minutes against Illinois and 5 minutes against Duke. There was a reason for that. And Reibe is playing very little who played 7 minutes against Duke and 5 minutes against Illinois.
I understand why everyone is picking Michigan, they have 9 starters.
When Hurley has gone to the bench to rest our starters it has been disastrous losing momentum. We need to somehow reverse that to hang in this game, and if we do this could surprise the world.
You might be surprised to find out that our bench guys have generally sustained our momentum throughout the tourney. Won't bore you with the metrics, but Ross/Smith/Reibe/Stewart in various combos with 1-2 starters has not been the disaster you seem to think it is.

Last Thursday I was buying a fuel additive here in Mexico. Mexico gas is sometimes lesser quality and some recommend an engine cleaner additive on occasion. I read that Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner is the best option. But the local Autozone I went to did not carry it. The best available option was Lucas Oil Deep Cleaner Additive. I bought it. Seems like its working ok. I'm taking it as a good sign.

Most people think that UConn needs to keep the game in the 60s. I just listened to Ray on the Dan Patrick show DP and he suggested that UConn should run some since that is the best time to take trailing threes before the defense sets up. And UConn cannot afford any scoring droughts against Michigan.
We have selectively pushed pace throughout the tourney. I expect we'll do the same tonight when it's there.

We got Solo a great open look/make from 3 in the Illinois game when Silas pushed pace, and in the Duke game, Braylon had 2 wide open transition 3's.

They did a pretty good job against Illinois in the second half as I recall. The subs plus Ball had an eleven-point lead before the starters returned around the eight-minute mark.

We need to be ready for Cadeau's intentional misses off the backboard that are actually passes
Are people really saying that? I don't think they are intentional misses, but I do think he is putting up shots going downhill on the pick and roll action knowing there is good chance Mara or Morez Johnson are in good position to get the offensive rebound.

Here is a link to the game that Ray referenced. It caught UNLV off guard. UConn would need to shoot well above their average though. IU UNLV 1987 FF Semifinal

I agree and was being a bit tongue in cheek. We will have to do a good job limiting second chances like always though.

Breeding makes me a bit nervous, not gonna lie. We can’t be getting tick tack foul trouble.
On the contrary, I hope they call it super tight. For one, we need freedom of movement in this game more than any other this season (maybe St. John's); for two, we should try to get in the bonus early - shooting free throws sure beats shooting over them; for three, our bench is better than theirs. I say let's get Cadeau in foul trouble and see what happens!
