UConn vs. Memphis @ J.O.C. (Fri. 4/1/19 @ 3p, Sat 4/13 @ 1p & Sun. 4/14 @ *11:00am*)

According to the Penders interview, it was a blown hit and run play. Pat Winkel didn't get the sign.

Was wondering what happened there. Pat Winkel hasn't really made mental mistakes so I don't expect that to happen again.

Nice way to start the weekend off. We need to see some offensive production sat/sun.

Huskies Gut Out 3-1 Win vs. Memphis

Notes
  • Mason Feole recorded seven strikeouts on Friday to move his career total to 230. Feole passed Tim Norton (226) and Wills Montgomerie (226) for fifth all-time in UConn history.
  • The Huskies moved to 2-11 on the season when outhit by an opponent.
  • John Toppa singled in the first inning to grab his 199th career knock.
  • UConn is 18-0 when leading after eight innings this season.

UCF up 15-0 at Cincy in the 8th. I guess the Bearcats gave us their best effort of the year.

Both of our midweek opponents are better than Cincy; Bryant by a large margin.

AAC so far today

UCF beat Cincy 15-0
Houston beat Wichita State 13-5
Tulane best USF 9-2
ECU is tied w/ #1 UCLA 5-5 heading to the 7th (they were up 5-2 until they gave up a three run bomb w/ 2 outs in the B6.

Mason Feole did the job today. Probably the second best outing for Feole on the season, the top one would be his game against Houston.

USF is terrible.

I have been listening to the UCLA radio and am impressed by their play by play guy. He's almost as good as Jones :)

ECU left bases loaded in the 9th and went to down to UCLA 7-5.

It would be great to jump all over them and save the pen for tomorrow!

Kersten has not really been going long into games this season, so we're probably going to see a bit of a bullpen activity today. We'll see how much of it involves Wurster and Dandeneau.

Chris Winkel descends the batting order. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to give him a day off against a lefty pitcher at some point. Of course, the coaching staff loves his defense at 1B, and it is doubtful that anyone else on the team can come close to him in that regard. While people are always yelling about offense around here, it is important to remember that this team is more dependent on good pitching and defense to bring in the wins. Based on that, I tend to doubt Winkel will be getting any days off, especially in weekend conference games.

I would give Thad a shot at first in a midweek game, but I agree that we need as much defense as possible, especially with Jeff on the mound.

Agreed but moving him down in the order the way he hits makes sense. At this point in his junior season he is who he is. Like c mo expecting him to be a consistent impact bat is unrealistic. You just dont want him up too many times with the top of order on base only to come up empty.

Aside from Feole, non of UConn's current starters get big strikeout numbers, although it is possible that they could develop into that. I would be inclined to say that at this point they all need as much defense as possible behind them. Besides, I don't think the incremental increase in offense that you might get from Phillips or anyone else would offset the defensive deficiencies of someone else other than Winkel at 1B. I say bat Winkel lower in the order as they are today and just live with it.

According to Chris Jones, lots of injuries for USF this season.
